here's my version of the ikea racing cockpit ;)

IMG_3370.jpg

I pinched your idea and have to say - works rather well! "Pello" seat for 19 € (though I think the seat's discontinued, had to search a few stores to find one) and a few bits I had lying around.

I struggled a bit to get right height so my knees wouldn't hit the board where the wheel is fastened.

Quite stable and easy to dismantle - just 4 screws - and if one is careful about drilling the wholes, the chair still looks decent.

Perfect low-cost chair and quite compfty. I guess I'll add some fake leather to make the board look nicer and more dashboard-ish.

I have come back after 5 years to this thread because of some great news...

Remember this steering wheel stand?

(God, I was a lot younger then!)

Well, the creator of that stand has been working on prototypes and improving this stand and also has made a stand that is adjustable to accept other wheels, other pedals, and also side gearshift. It looks completely professional and is made out of aluminium, plastic, and wood. It will withstand hard driving and force feedback from the strongest wheels out there. And because of the design, it keeps your pedals and wheel exactly where you want them. The angle of the pedals and wheel are completely adjustable.

It's at a price point that has been pretty much neglected so far, as there's been cheap crap for $100, or pro cockpits starting at $900.

and here's 2 pictures of the new stand.

I hope folks realize this is a guy working out of his garage shop who is a racing enthusiast crazy enough to come out with a solid racing stand that folds flat (8 inches high), fully adjustable, in a good price range.

I'm not posting the website or contact info out of respect. If folks are interested, this is easy enough to find.

Okay, someone clearly didn't pay much mind to the CHEAP in the thread title. ===>feldon23 :P

That ApexVStand is definitely nice, but $245-265 isn't even remotely cheap for a wheel stand.

If someone has a recommendation on a better thread to discuss this, please feel free to suggest it. Until there is a Vendor forum, creating a new thread about it seems impossible. There is currently no fold-flat stand in this price range of this quality on the market.

Horrible Blackberry picture of wheelstand mark 1, which I built using scrap wood I had in the garage and 10 dollars worth of hardware. I had designed it to fold flat, which it was able to do, but even though it stayed perfectly upright using just the pins, there was a bit of flex so I added supports to the middle arm, which made it good and stable.

It's nothing fancy, but it works. Eventually I'll build a proper cockpit but for right now, it works. Now that it's no longer a folding stand I'm going to add a mount for the shifter so it's not right up top next to the wheel. Still though, for something designed and built over the course of 2 and a half hours including a trip to the hardware store, it's pretty damn good.

Why not try here?

I hate to say it, but I have to agree: good value for money doesn't make it cheap as in "I spent 10 € and two hours of work" cheap.

Like the idea and design nevertheless.

Well heres my cheap cockpit,

The design is my own, i call it the Z-Design (all the uprights kind of look like a Z from birds-eye-view), designed it by measuring up my 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer VR-X so it fits me perfectly but also all my mates fine aswell as the chair adjusts just like a car and the pedals can be moved (for now).

Just made out of 4"x2" wood, few tech-screws and a couple of nail plates for stability, Worked out real good, and was very cheap.
The seat is out of my old 1985 Mazda 323, purely for sentimental reasons but when i decide i want to finish it off it will be easy to change the seat.

Iv got a 5.1 surround sound system for it that im going to build into it, close in the sides, fix up the wiring, paint, do something with foot pedals, heaps of other little ideas..

This is very much just the foundations of my cockpit but does the job great untill i get around to finishing it off :)

This my first post, what better than to post my setup, which uses my good ol' PC desk: Price: €0 (well, I already owned the desk :P)

PS3 80GB
Screen: 25" HannsG 1080p Monitor (HDMI)
Sound: Logitech X-240 2.1 Speakers
Wheel: Obviously a Driving Force GT :P

This is how i've got my DFGT setup at the moment, a wooden sketching board, an old Keyboard stand and some ancient chair that was lying about, held together with strong tape. It's surprisingly sturdy.;) The cushion is there for those long haul sessions.
Total Cost = £0

I could quite easily afford a Playseat Evolution now, but im saving for a car so that's not going to happen. I'll probably buy a new wheel and up making my own proper cockpit at some point in the future though.:)

I really liked ericleroi's stand so I made something fairly similar. It's not cheap, but compared to a buying a new one it definitely saves a few bucks..

It's a '94 miata seat and the frame is 3/4" MDF with 3/4" hardwood for inside supports.

Thanks? I dimensioned it the way I did for a reason: it's easier to trace out on plywood and the radius's can be whatever size plates/glasses you have to trace - not dimension driven. I posted it to help people build it not to get an 'A' in engineering graphics class, if someone wants to build one they can use either. Also, the background is intentionally white for printing.

I wasn’t bagging on your dimensioning only trying to clean up what I saw was a cool design. I thought I would help out with what I thought was a little confusing for someone who might have tried to build it. I was trying to act friendly and helpful to someone who was giving so freely to people who didn’t have one. Mine was not to insult you or find likeminded rejection from others who would have to pay good money to clean up a drawing if they were a customer of mine.
I know what it is like to design things and try to have them built by someone else only to find out that my dimensioning was the biggest challenge to the reader. Sorry if I ruffled anyone’s feathers, I only wanted to give what I thought was a gift to a fellow enthusiast.

This is my stand, but when i look at other stands people put up here in this thread i am thinking of building a new one with a chair.
its pretty stable and the tape is for protection that you don't cut your hand. The screws came trough from the other side :sly:

Hi m8, nice idea on the gym equipment, but why the flip camera?

Because I like to record my races and to share it with those who were racing with me. It's fun to watch back the close situations, and to decide if a collision was my foult or it was a lag in the game or something.

After a few months of not having a solution for my new room layout, I had a stroke of genius and put this together in an afternoon:

And I can even slide it out about 3 feet or so so I have room for my pedals and so I can more easily use it with my laptop:

This is by far the most stable, absolutely immovable thing I've ever attached a steering wheel to (probably due to the well-over-hundred-pounds of TV on the desk, and that the desk uses old-fashioned drawers). Now I just need a new steering wheel (my DFP is currently broken :().
