Another cheap desk setup... As soon as I get home I will go to the junk yard and find two nice sporty seats and build something.

Hi Guys,

I have one of the below gaming chairs, and have ordered a G25 racing wheel,

xrocker_chair.jpg

I want to build some kind of cockpit or stand that will be good to use with this kind of chair, but havent seen anything that i think will work on this forum. I dont have a problem with drilling holes into the chair or anything like that.
I do think that my personal DIY skills might hold me back a bit, but i'm willing to give most ideas a try.

If you have any suggestions for people who have tried something similar i would be very happy.

Thanks

Here's an idea. I didn't make it,someone I know gave it to me with the DFP. I use it since April 2009 and it's been great. I can move the seat backwards and forwards.

Check Precise Chair AK-200 for some Ideas to modify your chair, I believe the chair is based off the AK Rocker chair. The problem I potentially see with your chair is the rocking motion and potentially the height off the floor. You don't want your legs, knees, or ankles to get sore from driving due to the improper angles. Look at my sig to see my setup, I modified a gaming chair (non rocker) and maybe you can get some ideas for an easy modification to yours.

That's a really nice setup you have there, 13inned. Please tell us more about the GT3RS and the CS pedals! Must be a dream to drive that with GT5P.

thanks! your handle is a dead give away for a fellow porker ;)

yes, GT3RS and CSP out of the box works perfectly for the GT5P w/ some kungfu tweaks - changing dates ang triangle button for the clutch activation. imo fanatec and GT5P is just an icing on the cake.

you have to use it for pc racing sims to avail its full potential. this is where GT3RS shine from other wheels that can cross borders - console and PC use.

the belt driven motor is smooth and quiet.
force feedback, wheel sensitivity is fully adjustable whether using a software or the built-in settings on the wheel.
the built of the wheel is highly impeccable esp the use of alcantara leather and how it resembles the actual GT3 RS wheel.

the CSP is another ballgame w/c deserves a spotlight on its own.
it's built like a tank not to mention its weight for being made of aluminum. again, its sturdier than its closest competitor.
adjustability is where the CSP shines. you'll definitely love the brake feel where you can adjust the travel and firmness based on your preference. it's very helpful for pc racing games where you brake within its threshold but still gives the right intuition on preventing them to lock.

I got a seat from IKEA. A chair with no legs from they "special offers" (as in: returned or show items) for €12. That and the table (6) brings it up to €18. I'll try to get it together tonight so it's ready for GT5Demo/Academy :) and I'll post some photos.

Edit:
Haven't fixed it yet. I'll put something connecting the back legs that will act as elevator to make the wheel straighter, and also allow me to screw the pedals to.

(More photos on flickr)
The seat will need to be raised as well in the front as I have no leg or back support as is, and end up getting to tired in the legs (always in the air) and the back side gets numb (too much weight).

Edit #2: After extensive testing ;) I've found that lifting the front of the chair 10cms really helps

Here is something that I found on the internet and got it delivered today. Its very easy to put it together. There are no photos available of this product anywhere else or any review at all, just two small photos available. Anyway here is a photo that I took a while ago. Feel free to ask any questions about it or even more photos of it. :)

Got my son a GT for Christmas. Once i used it i knew i needed to make some way to mount it and be sturdy enough to make it enjoyable. Here is what i came up with today. It really works well, and is very sturdy. No movement whatsoever. It cost $22.00 to make 2 of them. I decided to make 2 because of the standard lengths the wood was sold as.

Materials:

Base: Pressed wood 2'x2' (Sold in 2'x4', cut in half)
Legs: 2x10 cut to desired lengths depending on your height (Sold in 12' lengths)
Top: Rubbermaid multipurpose shelving (Sold in 11.8"x23.8 size)
Excess 2'x10' material is used for support triangles.

Tips: Pre drill the top shelving material holes. That stuff splits very easily.

Pro's: Very sturdy, and rock solid. It actually works better then i thought it would. I am very happy with it.

Con's: Ugly!, heavy, and no beer holder yet! I wouldn't make one to lug upstairs or anything. LOL
Oh, and before you comment on it. Yes i know its too tall for my son in the pictures. This was my prototype. I will be making him a better one very soon.

This is the set-up i use. I have a seat out of one of my 2CV's which you can remove or replace in less than 2 minutes. Then i have my g25 and pc monitor on a £7 ironing board which is super sturdy. This is for iRacing. when playing GT i have to play with the TV further away and not on the ironing board.

Here's my budget build, Coffee table modified (had to take that long brace off one side so legs would fit), cheap gaming seat from Wally World (which is uncomfortable after about 2 hrs of driving), and pedal box I made with some scrap lumber laying around. Sorry for the crappy cell pics.

Here you can see said pedal box which I had to make to get proper angle. Also, you can see the decorative bracing across the front. *Also, I have broke out an old pair of racing shoes I have and it is a much better experience.

Here is the view I used to have. And here you can see where I removed the decorative bracing. Yes, the table is still very sturdy and ridgid. As you can tell all the height's, angles and such worked out perfectly for stuff I already had around the house. *Yes, those are all BFC's. hahaha
Cockpit.jpg

As you can tell I decided to change my view/seating position to one that makes it feel a lot more sim. LOL Thats a 55" Sony Grand Vega SX that is just about perfect size. :D Also, after I'm done I can just put the chair and DFGT up, move the coffee table back in front of the couch and the cockpit is stealth once again. My pedals are now touching the tv stand. Definitely draws you into the game. Ha

I constructed this racing cockpit tonight. Total cost was $21 in supplies. I started by measuring all the dimensions from my drivers seat so that I had references when cutting the wood. Things came out pretty well and I feel like im sitting in my car while play LFS and Gran Turismo. The seat is fully adjustable forward, backward etc.

I have never in my life built anything wood related..so if you are a trained carpenter.... sorry if I jacked up your trade. I do have hours of Bob Villa and Chuck Norris video/movies under my belt. I watched them make things out of wood a few times.

total time from start to getting back to my room roughly 4 hours

I tested the setup out and it drives very well. I will brace it with some L brackets... It's pretty solid without them but I just want extra bracing because I have the force feedback on 10. Tomorrow I will Fab up a Shifter mount.

If you want to build your own, I have all of the measurements.
