Been thinking about building my own steering wheel mount for ages. With that in mind, I wondered down to my local DIY store today and happened to come across this.

I'm not famous for my carpentry skills but it looks pretty simple so I bought the wood and plan to have a bash at it this week. I'll let you know how it goes!

Some interesting builds! Love the DIY! Here is my build using PVC pipes painted with a black rubber coating. Some of the wires are tucked in the pipes. Sand is at the bottom PVC pipe to give the stand more weight. The wheel itself sits on a wood block with CF look film over top. Also added a stand for the PS Eye to use the head tracking in GT5! Complete costs me under $30

That is a really great PVC setup.
Not like most in the tread and using the sand is a great idea for weight I have not seen used before. 👍

This is a improved version of my current set up but still a work in progress. I'd like to mount a 55" HDTV to the wall (currently using a 40") but that might require raising the cockpit a bit more than I'd want.

Anyone in the market for a dfgt Argos (uk) have just dropped the price again to £71.99.
I ordered mine 2 weeks ago there just back in stock at the new price, Hope this helps someone :)
I will probably be back here tommorow looking for ideas on a cockpit !

Don't have much space in my room so I couldn't get anything like a Playseat etc. Also didn't really want anything like the Wheelstand Pro since it looks a bit unstable to me, bit too expensive anyway. So I thought I'd make something myself that would be cheap, stable and works with my office chair.

And here it is:
dfgttable0.jpg

Only cost me about 60 euros for all the wood and 4-5 hours of work. And as I wanted, it's very stable and it's perfect with my office chair.

Also put some small blocks on it to keep the pedals in place.

It's not the best ofcourse, but what else can you get for only 60 euros? :P Only downside is that only I can use it since you can't really adjust anything. But I'm the only one using it here anyway.

Still planning to paint it black soon.

Heres mine only cost about 100 bucks in wood. I got the stainless for free.

Took about 3 weeks to complete because im 15 and im still learning how to use all the power tools. Next step is a nice 47in led tv if i can get one on the cheap !

As it is... i dont think this is going to be very stable, the feet part is too thin and does not have anything to keep it grounded....
need some work ;)

Felt pretty solid in the shop. The base is made from thick wood and the diagonal pillar is supported on three sides. Time will tell however. I am considering a PVC construction if it fails. Really liked cwbetb's approach.

no... what i mean is: HOW are you going to keep the whole structure still??

what are you going to attach this to???

do you have a frame? because as it is... you cant use it right?
i know it is solid, but detached from everything else :S it's not a viable solution... unless you are going to hold it between your legs...

EDIT: i have added a few more pics of my setup in the post above.

Detached from what? It's a stand. The wheel attaches to the stand, end of story.

I don't understand you're thinking that everything has to be attached as a frame. I sit on a chair - it doesn't move because I am sitting on it. The pedals are on the floor - they don't move because of gravity and they have rubber on the base. The stand is for the wheel which I have already said is sturdy.

Tbh, I don't believe it will be very sturdy either. The feet part is just too small to provide support imo. Have you used it already?

If there is a problem that I am expecting there will be, it looks like it can be easily cured so no problems in the end anyway, possibly.

Just got a DFGT and was going to make some wooden setup, but my dad figures he will be able to put together something like a wheel stand pro, which I would much prefer.

So, does anyone have the dimensions or schematics for a WSP? Haven't been able to dig up any accurate info with measurements and the likes.

Forget dimensions use the opportunity to build a fitted one! get your self in the seat your going to use and measure up for a custom built one to your own size / spec. just use the same design as the wsp.

Hi

Don't know if this is cheap, but cheap if you already have RockBand drum kit.

Whole story with text in: http://picasaweb.google.com/juha.j.vainio/TelineRattiohjaimelle#

Pictures

1) Shelf stud, plywood, before fixing the correct width.

2) Shelf stud + board. Fixed studs. Board fixed to shape of wheel.

3) Fitting studs and board. It has to be taken care that wheel is in center of stand.

It looks as thought i can push with one finger on the top and it will tip over to one side...

but like someone said above, it's not a big problem, this can be simply solved.
you will figure out... that's a good start at least...

Put together Mark I this afternoon. Was a bit wobbly (though not to the extent you could 'push it over with one finger') so I added a horizontal support on the base. I think it needs one more at the base nearest to the chair. But pretty happy with my first attempt.

👍

If you can in any way, try to make it so that the weight of you & the seat will be on the stand (with the additional part you were speaking of). But it looks to be becoming efficient enough! :)

New images, still need to fix the stand to the LCD, which will also reside here and paint at the end of all.
I have 2 consoles, one to play and another for the Folding@home

Isn't THAT standing in your way??
Having something in between your legs (in addition to what you already have) seem a bit awkward to me...

it's almost as if you have to hug that poll while driving... not an ideal situation

But whatever works for you 👍

Just like Timpppaq said, you really should bold the whole stand to a >>> FLAT WOODEN BOARD , so that your chair is literally sitting on top of that : making everything stable ;)

About 60 bucks and 3 days to make. Steel frame, diamond plate for the foot rest and wheel mount. Next is trying to find a cleaner way to run wires and make a dead pedal. LOVE IT.

Nice setup you have there. 👍

And welcome to GTPlanet.
Great job and welcome to GTPlanet.

Though I agree with Timo's suggestion, the pole in the middle may not be a problem.
I use a setup every Sunday with a pole in the middle, no problem, though ours is not a wide as his.

Have a look at the LAN team SMART link in my signature.
The red setups are built with the pole.

MMeglen - You have no idea how close that is to what I want to build. I made a little sketch that is sitting on my desk and thought I was seeing things when I saw your post.

I'd like to make mine sit just a tad lower though. Does it wobble at all? I want mine to be sturdy but not weigh 100 lbs. Also you mind showing pictures of the shifter area? I have no experience with welding but know a couple friends who MIGHT help me. How hard would you say the whole thing was?
