Isn't THAT standing in your way??
Having something in between your legs (in addition to what you already have) seem a bit awkward to me...

it's almost as if you have to hug that poll while driving... not an ideal situation

But whatever works for you đź‘Ť

Just like Timpppaq said, you really should bold the whole stand to a >>> FLAT WOODEN BOARD , so that your chair is literally sitting on top of that : making everything stable ;)

Actually no the pole doesn't get in the way though I'm thinking about making it slightly slimmer in the middle and maybe reinforcing with a steel strip or something.

The board idea seems like total overkill to me and would make it really cumbersome to move around. I'm thinking about attaching two narrow strips of wood to the sides of the base which would fit underneath the chair, the weight of which would prevent the stand from being tipped forward. Thanks to Timpppaq for the suggestion!

About 60 bucks and 3 days to make. Steel frame, diamond plate for the foot rest and wheel mount. Next is trying to find a cleaner way to run wires and make a dead pedal. LOVE IT.

Very good đź‘Ť

No problems.. it's an obvious thing to aim at with all rigs / stands. You should be able to use your weight to make it stable.

Got home from work this evening and made this small attachment to the stand so that my weight on the chair keeps it more stable.

My son (8) says I should spray it black so that's what I shall be doing tomorrow afternoon. Also got some rubber sticky things to put on the base to make extra sure it doesn't move.

Oh, interesting solution.. quite crucial to get the height of those cut outs right. :) Will the stand tilt now if you sit on the chair?

If you have trouble keeping the pedals still, simple rope doing a U-turn behind them and tied to the upright board, through holes(?), might be enough. (easy adjustment too :P)

The stand doesn't tilt at all: the height is just right ;)

When I set out about this project and I guess what has made it fun for me, is trying to take an approach that no-one else has. My budget is really limited (basically whatever change I have from my lunch money!) so fancy materials were out of the question. Also living overseas in rented accommodation, I don't have access to a workshop or any power tools so everything had to be done by hand i.e. sawing and drilling. Getting all the angles right was quite a challenge!

I'll post an extra picture of the shifter area when I get home tonight. It doesn't wobble at all when playing and weighs about 40 pounds all together. It was made from 1/2" steel tubing all around. The only part that wasn't easy was getting it all square and prepping the angles for the tubes before welding. Measuring two and three times for every pipe and getting the angles just right were key to it all.

You need to work on those camera skills later. Always place your arms against you body to reduce the camera shake. Though nice rig.

Special effects! ;)

:P

EDIT: better photos. I learn quickly. :D

I'm learning how to use google sketchup. Once I get the hang of it, I think I'm going to make a new and better looking setup. (I never call it a cockpit, sounds so childish :D).

Why are you sitting so high up?? is it because the height of your tv screen?
It looks as though you are building an electric chair for yourself

Yep! And I had to because I couldn't lower the workbench without cutting it to pieces. I think I'm still going to need it to build my permanent setup, oooo, irony.
Electric chair? Nooo, :scared: electric chairs give off EMV's. :nervous:

Like to, yes. Able to, no! :guilty:

lol @ the workbench mod...and remember its what works for you, screw everyone else.

if it works it works.
I'm so proud of my achievement.
:embarrassed:

Are you sure it wasn't the EM, UV or gamma rays? :sly:
No, it wasn't, or was it? Do I have to worry now? :scared: :dopey: :sly:, lol (like I said, I don't have a fobia anymore). ;)

People don't forget, it's a temporary solution until I get a PS3 and know if GT5 has a multi monitor setup capability.

here is my submission to the cheap alternatives thread ...

after weeks of trolling this and other similar threads, looking for a wife/apartment/3yr old friendly solution i started buying and returning folding tables ( not stable enough ) thinking of buying pvc to build a folding rig ( where would i put it once im done playing? ) thinking of constructing my own folding wood table ( im not a carpenter, and where would i put it when im done playing?) and other ideas, including some ebay ones . . . i was no where closer to coming up with a viable solution.

But on tuesday while i was driving home from work the proverbial light bulb went off, i'll build something off my existing entertainment center, and wedge it under the top glass and frame. . . so i got home, said hello to the wife, took some quick measurements, drew up a quick schematic, packed up the kid and went to home depot.

i purchased a plank of MDF and had them cut and trim off some of the excess to fit in the frame.

total cost of project was under $8.00 - about $5 for the MDF, and $2 for some nuts / bolts.

. . .if we could only have a release date!

Hi everyone,

There's some interesting stuff that people are building on here. This is what I'm currently putting together. Hopefully I'll have finished the build by the weekend and can start to paint and varnish it and then start to use it ... I've just bought a Buttkicker to mount under the seat as well and am looking forward to trying the thing out. Let me know what you think ....

- UPDATE

Hmmm .... trouble with attaching pictures . I'll sort this out soon.

I would take a shot from underneath but lighting is poor and all I have is a camera phone.

thats real nice. looks simple but clean and effective. but do you use those weights or are you able to use the stand without them? im looking at having just a stand similar to the fanatec rennsport but it seams difficult to have a REALLY sturdy stand unless you have a seat involved that uses your body weight to keep it stable.

No, I'm not using the weights. They were there in case I needed them but were just never brought back down. Putting a five pound weight on the stand may not hurt as more weight will generally add to the stability, but I feel it isn't needed. The wheel moves maybe a 1/4" left to right during play and none from front to back.

Too bad it only looks good with cars with a similar rpm and max speed.
Would be cool to have one with displays instead of the fixed values on the dials. But then it may be easier to just have an LCD display in there.
