93 years ago today. The first running of the Le Mans 24 Hours.

...How many cars actually made it? I have no clue how reliable the 1900s era cars are.

Out of interest, when did Le Mans first take place on a fully tarmac track? I've been looking for images but I can't find enough good ones of the early races.

Wasn't that style of aero a total failure?

Yup, banned after the 1969 Spanish GP, the wings used to break mid race causing accidents.

Jochen Rindt had a lucky escape when his wing collapsed while he was leading in Spain.

"Tragedy was close" he reads, with only a broken nose and a few bruises.​

Seems paved by 1932.

Looks like 1927 might be the last non-tarmac race:

So I'd say it was resurfaced sometime around 1928-1929.

I'm not sure which one of those classics I'd like to drive more. The Martini Porsche, what looks like an RS3100 Cologne Capri or the flying BMW bat mobile?

The race was overshadowed by the accident of Stuart Lewis-Evans, who died of burn injuries six days later. As a result, Vanwall withdrew from motorsport at the end of 1958 and Morocco never hosted a Grand Prix again.

Dan Gurney driving his Porsche 804 on the Green Hell for the 1962 German Grand Prix. He started first and finish 3rd. It was his first pole position for him and Porsche and the 5th and last podium for Porsche.

Gerhard Mitter driving his Lotus 25 on the Green Hell too, but in 1965. It was his last race in Formula 1, he started 12th (his best qualifying) but did not finish.
