But then you raise THE POINT. No one has seen a photo before, no one has seen what type of shots the others have put through. Now, if you have skills it wouldn't be difficult to pull something original and get through next round. If not, it means you have to step up your game.
Luck may be part of the game, but you also need at least some skills to pull it right.

I think the problem for everyone here is the fact that everyone has another idea of the theme and people had about one week time to think about: what is the best approach to it? What should it look like? What should a battle between cars look like and what might be boring? I think the outcome reflects in the voting results. People vote for what they think fits best to the theme following their own imaginations. You might not see any difference to the normal photomode competitions here, but this qualifyer is nothing more than the same the judges do every week. So you are very depending on peoples taste and imagination of the theme to get to the next round. Of course it helps when you have skills to deliver high quality pictures but as long as people vote for pictures it will be always 50% skill and 50% having good luck and touching people´s taste. And I think for this qualifyer there is a little bit of momentum on the "good luck" side.

To give you an example: I see some pictures in here where I can hardly understand that they run out of votes to qualify. For example that picture with those two drivers next to each other (10th from the top) has only 14 votes while a pic with a similar composition in the 2.0 poll is leading with 47 votes. At the same time there are pictures where I ask myself: How in the heck did they get that much votes? But you know, that´s just my own taste. Obviously people think different.

I think the problem is that to many people send their entries with to little preview images.
In the rules it says, click to full-size before voting! That should be done with Every picture!!!
But I think the most don't do that and so they overlook the small pictures and don't vote on them.
thats why mostly the thumbnail pics will loose. Even if its an awesome shot.

Wallbreaker, yes, I have to agree with you, peoples taste probably play a bigger role, even bigger than skills. But I just can't seem most of that luck coming around, I mean, yeah, there will always be that shot that gets allot of votes for no reason or another that deserve more votes and hasn't. But I have to say, that the big majority of the shots with most votes, are in fact the ones that either convey a great sense of battle or are amazingly creative given the theme. But fact given, I can't really tell the pattern used to vote, if that is what you are aiming at. Identical type of shots have very differently number of votes, but well, I guess that is the beauty of the game.

Let's just not derail much with comparisons, after poll closes photo reviews and constructive criticism will be allowed and encouraged. 👍

Personally I didn't think that pic really fitted the theme but it was a good pic. My favorite pic would have to be the B&W NASCAR shot.

B&W Nascar was awesome. The x2010/kart shot didn't do it for me - awesome idea but didn't mesh with the theme.
