Codemasters Reveals Off-Road Racer ONRUSH

Very impressed with my beta experience so far. I do feel like it doesn't give you enough heads up on the more complex systems at play. Very easy to assume that the game is just a madness with no set rules or logic in place.

One thing I want to know is if the game automatically fills lobbies with CPU players when there isn't enough real players.

So according to that article there's dynamic weather, time of day and even seasons, and unless I'm reading the article wrong these can all - with the possible exception of seasons? - occur on each track.
Didn't we only see the same few time of day variations in the beta? And I don't remember any rain and storms.

If they've held back on this stuff it sounds like the full game will have some great stuff going for it in addition to the extra vehicles, tracks and two more game modes.

The article does say,
"We like what we've seen so far with Onrush, and having spent some time with gold master code, it's fair to say that the recent beta version of the game only offers a small glimpse of the whole game. What we can say for sure is that performance and stability has certainly improved - indeed, when the beta code hit early last month, that version of the game was already five weeks old and optimisation in the run up to launch has been a key focus for the team."

I can back up all of this having been getting stuck into the full game the past few days. Under embargo so can't go into detail but the beta is not really representative of the full game at all!

I'm watching the 37 minutes documentary from DigitalFoundry now. Really interesting.

The main stuff about weather, seasons etc. starts here:

Sounds like there will indeed be seasons for each track.

Yeah, I was about to suggest you watch the DF vid as that's a lot more in-depth. Copies are being reported as arriving by the way, I think predominantly those bought from ShopTo.

The dynamic weather/time and seasons thing is going to be a joy for the game's longevity, as it was for Driveclub.

That must be frustrating and at the same time, joyous :D

Furiously typing up review segments as we speak to relieve the stress. :D

Just pre-ordered, unlocking in two hours here on PS4.

I was sold after the extra beta track additions and the new(?) info about weather and seasons.

I have to say though that given the seemingly very low level of interest here, on YouTube, Reddit and the official forum, I am concerned that it just won't sell well and it will turn into another Blur fiasco.
Assuming the full game turns out as well as the last beta days showed glimpses of - and positive reviews (I really have no idea which direction they might go in) - hopefully it will catch on.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'll feel I'm getting my money's worth, even if the multiplayer (hopefully not) turns out to be short lived in player base.

The comparison to Blur sums up exactly how I feel. I'm genuinely worried that it could end up the exact same way as that game.

OnRush appears to be the sort of game that not many people will purchase, but everyone who talks about it in 5 years time will have fond memories of it.

I hope I'm wrong on the first part.

Bear in mind Driveclub folks - even with its bad start it still has an online presence and is played regularly by many. Lowest-common denominator is and always will be a problem for variety in games. It's easy for me, as I don't play games in the traditional way anymore, but live for the fun and the photo mode.

Anyway, I hope ye all have as much fun as I intend to - enjoy.

Even with all of its issues, Driveclub had the advantage of being unveiled as (what was supposed to be) a first-party launch title, alongside the debut of the Playstation 4 system. Additionally, Driveclub was bundled with PS4s which helped to boost the sales a lot.

I wasn't so much talking about the sales side really, like you suggested though its more the continued activity and perceived worth over time that will carry it. If anything though, being a multi-plat should help them initially as it's more than just the one and interest so far appears to be evenly spread.

First multiplayer match was zone capture in a blizzard at night on a track I hadn't tried before. It was fun.
Now back to the singleplayer campaign for the last hour before I have to call it a night.

Lots of things to unlock - player outfits, icons, win poses etc. I was mistakenly under the impression that there would be a livery editor though, but instead there are 64 skins for each vehicle (which can include paint jobs, liveries and various quite different vehicle body parts). That's probably enough for now though.

If anyone here knows how and where to communicate with the devs (I know Rushy used to visit the DriveClub forum here, not sure if that will happen with OnRush), please, please, please suggest an auto accelerate feature. Some of us have creaky (semi-)old elbows and wrists and having to hold down accelerate 99.9% of the time is not helping our tendinitis - and seems somewhat redundant.

I know Rushy used to have an account here - but he is definitely still visible elsewhere; you could try the RLLMUK forum as he maintains an Onrush thread there, same as he did for Driveclub. I'll put the question to him for ya as he already knows I'm older than movies...:D

It seems like Twitter is often the way to get a message through to devs these days? But I don't have an account.

Has Rushy revealed anything on the longterm support of this game?

I am not convinced of what I have seen and I can only judge the gameplay videos I've seen from others. BLUR was one of my favorite games but this doesn't seem to go into that direction.

I also am very doubtful of the game's succes. Rushy and his team surely deserve a chance but this isn't what I expected from a team that brought the thrilling DRIVECLUB. I think I would have attached much more to it if they went with BLUR's style instead of the game that it is right now. Also atm I can't justify its price either. I even think that the price will come down very fast and within a month or 2 you'll be able to find it for €30.

Photomode looks awesome though 👍 and that is pretty much the only thing I liked from what I've seen so far....

Looking forward to read some impressions in here

It will have ongoing updates and DLC was mentioned too - as they have proven pretty restless with regard to providing constant updates for DC I think this'll be similar. Certainly they are going to be adding more designs and liveries etc., which was also a DC trait.

One review bad, most others seem very positive from what I've seen this morning via the #ONRUSH tag.

If the support is anything like in DC than that is great. Unfortunately Codemasters don't really have a great trackrecord concerning DLC and I really wonder where it will go from here.

The positive reviews, is that due to they cut the EX-Evo's some slack or because it really is a decent game? I sincerely have my doubts because most gameplay opinions haven't been that positive and now suddenly this whole thing turns around.

I'll keep an eye on the impressions 👍

While it's still too early for me to give any final opinions - and certainly on longevity, based on a handful of hours with the beta and three hours with the full game (in which I've still only seen a little over half the tracks and barely any weather or season conditions yet), I'm inclined to say it's not merely a decent game but a good one. Potentially a very good one.

It's just not quite like anything else - not even like other vehicular combat games - and will most certainly disappoint those who want and expect a typical arcade racing game with no crazy deviations from the traditional formulas. Which I fear will sadly be most people.

The second I completed the tutorial on XOne, it crashed to the dashboard. Not a good first impression.

Actually, I have no idea what the reviews are saying or which line they're taking, as I haven't read or watched them  I tend not to do that kind of thing. I wouldn't imagine it was to cut slack though, as reviewers rarely do that. There has been a big disparity between beta and full game perceptions, plus others who were unhappy at first and now are very happy, so my guess is more along those lines.

Codemasters have let them run free so far and said the team would be autonomous - so hopefully it'll be no different from what we already know they're like - after all, they appear to have adopted the name Codemasters Evo now.

@MeanElf The reviews really surprised me and I did read a couple of them. As said I can't justify a full price purchase but from "a no-go even on deep sale" it went to "give it a couple of weeks and watch its progress".

I knew OnRush was never going to be a strong performer, but only 1,000 physical copies at launch in the UK?! That's a bomb if I've ever seen one.

Any more post-launch support is probably canned at this point I guess. If anything, there is gonna be a ranked mode and that's it. :(
