Yeah, the tradition/pageantry of the schools that have been around forever make college football so awesome. Here, our Pirate mascot has a foam sword, but our Jack Sparrow mascot (for the more serious, pumped up situations) looks like he could have a real one, and I bet they could come up with an epic lead up sequence with throwing a sword in the ground.

See, to me that is just so stupid. There is no tradition. They just want you to believe that so they can get their money from the DoEd when you decide to attend their school.

Here are some of many upcoming matches for this weekend, which ESPN is touting as "Road Test Weekend":

• #1 Oklahoma at #5 Florida State
• #23 Texas at UCLA
• Tennessee at Florida
• LSU at Mississippi State (THURSDAY NIGHT)
• #17 Ohio State at Miami
• #18 West Virginia at Maryland
• Colorado State vs. Colorado
• #15 Michigan State at Notre Dame
• South Alabama at North Carolina State (USA's debut football season)
• Navy at #10 South Carolina
• Louisville at Kentucky
• Utah at BYU
• #6 Stanford at Arizona

Any matches you looking forward to this weekend? By the way, I'm glad U. of Minnesota coach Jerry Kill is doing better after having a seizure as his Minnesota Golden Gophers disappointingly lost to New Mexico State. I hear that Garrett Gilbert (Texas, QB) is going to be benched this weekend, giving the QB duties to David Ash and Case McCoy.

Your missing michigan vs. Eastern michigan, which was a great game. And have you guys noticed im the only one here who includes michigan, one of the greatest legends of all time

I understand that. I was always under the impression that tickets (or alternate means to get in) to athletic events came with tuition, but I suppose I was wrong. I know most of the schools around here do, with the exception of maybe Duke basketball.

A great game for Michigan fans? Yes. A great game for an unaffiliated spectator? No. Michigan won 31-3 over a cupcake, dude. When you guys hit the Big Ten schedule, we'll be sure to include a mention of Big Blue. I like them personally. That statement would be just like me saying ECU beating No. 8 West Virginia 24-3 was a great game. It was one of the Top 10 coolest moments of my life, and probably the best moment in ECU history (or among them), but it wasn't the best game to watch. We were up 17-0 heading to the 4th and we manhandled them all game. So it depends on your definition of a great game, the best Big Ten game yesterday was definitely Penn State and Temple, in my opinion.

The ACC has added Pittsburgh and Syracuse as its 13th and 14th members, dropping the Big East to six schools (I remember them having 8). With only 6 schools, with the 7th coming next year in TCU, they'll need one more school. Maybe East Carolina will catch a break :).

We ( Ohio State Buckeyes ) are in deep trouble this year.
The Bucks smoked Akron U. 42 - 0, barely escaped from Toledo 27 - 22 (wtf), got our ass handed to us by the Hurricanes 24 - 6, and now we head into the meat of the schedule.

Colorado ( H ) - maybe a win. Would not bank on it.
#15 Michigan State ( H ) - calling a loss here.
#11 Nebraska ( A ) - calling another loss here.
Illinois ( A ) - should win this one.
#7 Wisconsin ( H ) - no brainer, a loss.
Indiana ( H ) - should win this.
Purdue ( A ) - calling a loss.
Penn State ( H ) - tough one, calling a slim victory
Michigan ( A ) - Loss, this is the year that Michigan will will start to run back over the Bucks. The Tressell era is over, new coach Luke Fickell is in place, we've lost to many kids, too many off field infractions / disturbances, too much inexperienced youth on this team to run with the big dogs anymore. Rebuilding phase coming up for the Bucks.

I'll call a 6 - 6 season for the OSU Buckeyes.Maybe get lucky and go 7 - 6, we'll see.

Best of luck to all of your teams.

The landscape of college football is changing with all the conference realignment stuff. I think I was watching the Penn State at Temple game (that was a good one), and a VERY important point was made by one of the announcers- these conference moves also impact some other sports besides football. Having said this, it's interesting that Syracuse and Pittsburgh applied for the ACC. I am really starting to think we may have four superconferences where all the big conference schools all want a piece of the BCS pie. This is probably more about money than making some push for FBS-level football.

One game I forgot to mention last night, Louisville knocked off Kentucky 24-17 with the game played at Commonwealth Stadium. Sorry for the Wildcats in this one.

As great as 4 superconferences sound, I wish there would be more. There are so many teams brimming with fan base, recruiting ability, and coaches/players spilling their hearts into those programs that just need an equal shot with some of those big name schools. I'm thinking there should be 8 15-team superconferences, with the champion of each getting into a 8 team, 3 week playoff. I really think that is a reasonable system, and that would open up the way for so many more huge games across the nation other than just the SEC/Big 12/Pac-12 championship games. If its about money, think about how many extra games you have (advertising space), how many extra weeks you have (even more advertising space), and how many more unknown teams will become elite with the money boost they'd get for getting into a "championship" conference (notice, the 8 superconferences would encompass every team in FBS football, giving every single team an equal shot going into the season). I just don't see why that can't happen. It would make college football so much more exciting, fair, and fan-friendly.

Last night, Joe Schad reported that the Big East was attempting to admit the 3 military academies, UCF, and most importantly, ECU. Well, it is now reported that they only want the military schools. Worst day in a while, I was getting pretty pumped. At least I only had one day in which to ponder possibilities, so I didn't get that far .

Time to kick off another weekend of college football. This time, a lot more in-conference matches are coming up. Here is a look at some of the many games this weekend:

• North Carolina State at Cincinnati (THURSDAY NIGHT)
• Central Florida at BYU (FRIDAY NIGHT)
• San Diego State at Michigan
• Arkansas at Alabama
• Oklahoma State at Texas A&M
• Notre Dame at Pittsburgh
• Temple at Maryland
• Colorado at Ohio State
• Florida State at Clemson
• South Alabama at Kent State
• Georgia State at Houston
• California at Washington
• Vanderbilt at South Carolina
• Florida at Kentucky
• LSU at West Virginia
• Missouri at Oklahoma
• Oregon at Arizona
• USCal at Arizona State

These and other games are this weekend, including games in other levels of NCAA football and in other college football leagues. Any games you're excited for this weekend?

By the way, the Conference Realignment deal is absolutely crazy! I have no real comments except... man. Crazy.

Cincinatti served up North Carolina State 44-14 last night. Question is... who'll get served tonight- UCF or BYU? We'll see later tonight!

Gameday! It's raining a bit, so I have time to post during the tailgating events today. Georgia Tech needs to beat Carolina, Duke really needs to put up a W against Tulane, ECU needs to pull it out today and get our offense in order, and WVU has to pull off the upset. Go Big East!

Meanwhile, I feel pretty excited about the Oklahoma State at Texas A&M and LSU at West Virginia games. This should be a great weekend of college football. So enjoy this weekend of college football!

ECU won and had 7 turnovers. That may be the first time in football history that that has happened, sitting in the stands was really stressful. My Blue Devils scored the win today as well, I can't remember the last time they beat anybody by 21. West Virginia looks alright so far, go Mountaineers!

Way to represent the ACC, Maryland. Temple OWNED the Terps 38-7. Maybe they should focus more on trying to win games rather than try to be the Oregon (as far as unique uniforms and uniform combinations) of the East Coast. Damned shame.

Because I had to go out with my parents, I was unable to watch some of the better afternoon games. Still... congratulations to all winners, and tough luck to all of today's losers up to this point.

Why is a hot dog 10 dollars!

Jeez, I thought $3.50 for water at Dowdy-Ficklen was steep. I don't think any concession are over $8 here. I guess power conference schools can do that .

That would probably come out to about 10 dollars here, I think the large drink is 5-ish, the small popcorn is about 3, and the hot dog would probably be 4. So 10 dollars as a package sounds about right.

West Virginia had a great shot at this until that kick return and their recent poor tackling. It actually looks like some good ol' East Carolina tackling to me, trying to kill the ballcarrier instead of putting two arms around him and putting him in the ground. I'm interested to see if their highpowered offense can put 3 touchdowns together in 10 minutes, doable but not likely.

We try to go to easy games, no disappointment, this was a great example, 45-7  Sometimes I enjoy a competitive game, however.

You would have been surprised if you were an East Carolina fan today then, we were supposed to pound the living daylights out of UAB, but we literally held the game out to them in the palm of our hands and they thankfully refused to snatch it. We had 7 turnovers, the referees were apparently on UAB's payroll (two personal fouls after our 3rd down stops when nothing happened), and our defense gave up 400 yards. Thankfully, they got less than 10 points off of 7 turnovers and we got about 600 yards, so we pulled it out. I don't even care about that, we just hafta hafta hafta beat Carolina next weekend. All of my friends that are Carolina fans are acting really arrogant about it, and I just know my Pirates can beat Bryn Renner and his Justin Beiber-enjoying self (that wasn't a homosexual innuendo, there was an actual interview where he listed his pump up playlist to include the Beiber ). And West Virginia ain't looking too hot, my friends. Darn.

Didn't have anything else to do at 4 in the morning? But anyway, pretty funny .

Just edited my sig to include some Pirate Pride. The link is ECUs way of pleading their case to BCS conferences, which I think is pretty good.

And looking at that picture again, I'm not diggin' the mixture of the tie and sneakers. We understand it worked at Temple, but there's no need to show off that you're sweating like a mule on national TV. Get a polo like everyone else .

• North Carolina at East Carolina

:D We have recognition! Even the Carolina fanatics at school think it will be a close game, and I am so so so pumped to be in my normal 40 yard line seat for the game :). Go Pirates!

I hope South Florida wins out until they play WVU, I want Skip Holtz to think he has a legit shot to play for a national title (they will if they win out) and then have it angrily wrested away from him. And then hopefully we get into the Big East and tear him a new rear end every year for not staying like he said he was going to. Should be the best weekend of football yet, I hope Florida knocks off 'Bama, I want to see John Brantley do well.

It's official, there will be a blackout at Dowdy-Ficklen on Saturday night. I don't think we will have black uniforms, last time we "blacked out" was '09 against Virginia Tech on the ESPN Thursday Night game when we revealed our logo with the state and the Pirate inside and our skull and crossbones helmet design. The place is gonna be absolutely rockin', and hopefully we can cheer that Carolina blue section out of Greenville :). Catch us on CBS College Sports Network, I believe, at 8 PM Saturday.

By the by, I hope Jordan Jefferson never plays another down of football at LSU. The only times I've ever watched him, he has been in the subpar-garbage range. Then, he has the nerve to go out and misbehave. Jarrett Lee has been great for the Tigers, and if I'm Les Miles, I stay with him through and through.

Not only was it an upset, it was a beat down. Pitt pulverized and grinded out South Florida 40-something to 17. It wasn't even close. If you don't have the CBS Sports Network (thanks to CAM for the cheap plug), you missed basketball on grass- Houston kept dropping balls and bricking good passes against the UTEP defense. However, they MANNED UP and took care of business 49-42 in El Paso.

You know, I may actually watch the Nebraska at Wisconsin game. That's going to be a good game for Nebraska and a real barometer of how the Cornhuskers can adjust to their new conference home against a great opponent.

Enjoy this weekend's games! Enjoy going to the sports bar or tailgating with many good college football games this weekend.

I was so surprised to see the result when I got up this morning. I went to bed shortly after half time and it had been a real back and forth game up to that point. Now if Pitt could just work on being consistent...

I really want Russell Wilson to win the Heisman. He's got the talent, if Wisconsin goes undefeated (probable, if they win tomorrow), I see Wilson winning it. That way, I can say East Carolina beat a Heisman winner (we beat State last season). Other than that, I want Luck or Lattimore to win. Duke plays FIU on ESPNU tomorrow, I'm interested to see if my Blue Devils can go over .500 for the first time in years ;).
