Musing time...

* DOWN GOES MISSISSIPPI STATE!

The unbeaten Mississippi State Bulldogs went into Tuscaloosa and tasted defeat for the first time this season. They lost 25-20 today to Alabama.

* Marshall beat visiting Rice 41-14. Why am I talking about Marshall after the fail by Mississippi State? One reason- Marshall remains unbeaten, unlike Mississippi State.

* Melvin Gordon is the truth! The running back for Wisconsin pounded the ball all over Nebraska with his runs. He surpassed LaDanian Tomlinson for most yards in a single game by a running back with his 408 yards of rushing (L.T. had 404 yards back in his days with TCU). Oh, and Wisconsin held serve at home, crushing Nebraska 59-24

* SO close for Crash's Washington Huskies. They nearly upset Arizona on the road, but end up losing 27-26 on a game-winning field goal by the Arizona Wildcats.

* In Overtime, it was Notre Dame who fell at home to Northwestern 43-40 after Northwestern forced Overtime on a late field goal.

* If Florida State loses later tonight at Miami, it will be REAL interesting to see what the Top 4 will be like in the College Football Playoff after Mississippi State's fail.

* Georgia Tech overrated Clemson at home today. The Rambling Wreck wrecked the Clemson Tigers with a 28-6 victory in Atlanta.

Congratulations to all other winners up to and beyond the time of this post. Better luck next time to all losers.

[UPDATE] Added score to Nebraska at Wisconsin. I knew I forgot to post the score. I also added Clemson at Georgia Tech results and noted Melvin Gordon accounted for 408 yards, not 406.

We now only have 1 undefeated team remaining in the top 25 since Alabama knocked off Mississippi State. We could have nobody with goose eggs in the top 25 if the Miami Hurricanes beat Florida State tonight.

EDIT: Well I just got ninja treed. :lol:

Lots of ranked teams lost today: Mississippi State*, Auburn*, Nebraska*, LSU, Notre Dame, Duke, Minnesota*

SMU was winning 13-0 with 9:46 left in the 4th quarter against South Florida....

They lost 14-13.

I just can't see Florida State being able to win in the Playoff games by being behind at halftime. Sooner or later, they'll get routed badly if they keep having to make comebacks.

Well, considering that the NCAA just failed to make an example of Winston by effectively never having to punish him due to pushing back the hearing, they better hope that Florida State does get embarrassed soon.

Not just that- one of their players pretty much got off scot free for a Hit and run accident. With all the off the field issues, I think that the NCAA should seriously look at imposing sanctions on Florida State University.

Won't happen. Unless their hands are tied. Honestly at one point they should just invoke the death penalty to show that they have some control.

The odds of the death penalty being used again in D1 Football are slim to none. Even Penn State didn't get it because of what happened to Southern Methodist University. SMU has never recovered since being given the penalty in the 80s after a few issues including paying players on the team, and as we all know, SMU's violations wouldn't hold a candle to Penn State's violations. SMU was in a power conference at the time that it was given the death penalty, and the aftermath of the death penalty included a destroyed SMU athletics program and ultimately the dissolving of the Southwest Conference.

THIS JUST IN...

...Will Muschamp (Florida coach) will step down at the end of the season. He'll coach the final two games of the season for the University of Florida. This news was picked up from ESPN's Bottom Line. I wonder whom will fill the head coaching spot for Florida next season.

Hopefully, he'll come to Auburn as a DC...hard to get worse than what we currently have

They will use it eventually but it would be if a small school committed serious violations.

My guess is they are going to go after Dan Mullen (Miss St) and Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) first since both have Florida ties. I heard I think it was ESPN say that Steve Spurrier is also on their list, but I can't see that being a realistic possibility.

Hopefully, he'll come to Auburn as a DC...hard to get worse than what we currently have

I'm sure they will be one of many who go after him for the DC role.

With Mississippi State going down and Florida State escaping defeat yet again, this week's College Football Playoff rankings will be very interesting to watch. The key teams to pay attention to are Mississippi State, Florida State, and Alabama. Could some shuffling be done among the top teams and First Two Out from last week's rankings? Could another school appear or reappear among at least the top six? This week's rankings are going to be VERY interesting.

How did the College Football Playoff committee vote on the Top 4 and the First Two Out? This is how it went:

TOP 4:
01 - Alabama
02 - Oregon
03 - Florida State
04 - Mississippi State

LAST TWO OUT:
05 - TCU
06 - Ohio State

What do you think about this set of rankings?

I can see why Mississippi State is still in the top 4, but I personally think that TCU should be there instead. Alabama absolutely dominated Mississippi State in that game. The score at the end did no justice.

Well, Baylor is screwed. They need help to make the playoff and even winning out may not be enough.

On deck tonight is North Carolina at Duke... football version. And News Flash- Duke football doesn't stink anymore! The Blue Devils are having a great season and have actually had a couple of great seasons. No Dick Vitale needed to hype up this match.

Plenty of other games are on tap this weekend including the collegiate Battle for Los Angeles: the Victory Bell is on the line between USCal at UCLA this weekend. Good luck to all of your team(s) this weekend.

Enjoy your college football today and tonight! Here are some games on right now, among others:

* Yale at Harvard
* Rutgers at #11 Michigan State
* Fordham at Army
* Minnesota at Nebraska
* Kansas at Oklahoma
* Northwestern at Purdue
* SMU at UCF
* Penn State at Illinois

Plenty of other games to be played later today and tonight, including Boston College at #3 Florida State and #19 USCal at #9 UCLA among others. So go follow a football game and be happy! Unless, of course... your team fails or is failing against a certain team.

[UPDATE] Yale at Harvard. I edited that.

Melvin Gordon III had the NCAA FBS single-game rushing record... for all of seven days. Samaje Perine of Oklahoma now apparently surpassed "MG3" for most rushing yards in a single NCAA FBS game. Oklahoma is currently beating Kansas' brains out with a 44-7 lead with 8:00 left in the game. Congratulations to S. Perine on setting this new record.

As of this post, [I think] S. Perine has accounted for about 427 yards and five touchdowns.

[UPDATE] 44-7 as of this initial post, not 41-7. Still, Oklahoma all over the Kansas Jayhawks.

Cal has no answers for the Stanford run game tonight. I'm pretty psyched; maybe we'll get ranked again? Sadly Oregon will be handed a win today against Colorado...

Oklahoma owned KU already today. It's a good day for me

Very surprised Ole Miss got blown out 30-0 by Arkansas...but with Bo Wallace, I'm really not surprised he turned it over 4 times

Seminole Nation can breathe again... again. Florida State managed to win 20-17 hosting Boston College; but the real issue people are talking about is Jameis Winston pushing an official, and not getting ejected for it. Bleacher Report was asking on Facebook if Winston should have been ejected. I have nothing against Florida State or anything. My only thing is, Florida State seems to get away with a lot to remain on their winning pace. A lot of people will still say that Notre Dame should have won against Florida State earlier this season had it not been for that controversial Offensive Pass Interference call late in the game that cost Notre Dame the game. Love or loathe Florida State, they seem to find ways to win. They are still hellishly vulnerable. It will be more a matter of when rather than if some school finally takes down Florida State.

Congratulations to all other winners this week and weekend, including my Houston Cougars being Bowl Eligible by beating Tulsa 38-28 here in Houston.

I can't believe how well my hometown team, the CSU Rams, are doing this year. 9 straight and nationally ranked. Go Rammies!
