Comparison of NFS:S2 vs GT5 - PS3

JediRage
To hell with GT5, I just popped in GRID today and just had a totally fun time. Didn't know why I had shelved it after completing the career mode. Probably because I had tried to complete the game like a maniac and got frustrated whenever I didn't win. Without replays and not caring about the result, I'm enjoying it a lot more.

So for the love of god, someone compare Shift 2 and GRID. I'm a bit iffy on picking up another EA game in the space of one week after picking up the mess that is Crysis 2.

Oh, and how is Dirt?

This i agree with a 100% Grid is the direct competition to shift, and I enjoyed it alot more.

What's it like with a wheel? And what platform please?

I realise that reply was rather succint, I really tried to enjoy Grid, bought it twice, went through a tonne of steering options with both a G25 and DFGT. Looked for guides online, everything and still couldn't get a good setup.

I have played GT, LFS, RFactor and Forza all with the wheel and all of these were immeasurably better.

Hi everyone, hope you're having fun with Shift 2. I'm not.

I've played the game the last 6 hours or so, using all sorts of variations on the steering settings posted elsewhere, and while it does make the game better, it's still pretty much undriveable for the most part.
I'm using a G27 on PS3.

Finally got so annoyed with it, put GT5 back in and for the first 2 laps of Nordschleife I was majorly oversteering and turning in far too early, going over the grass on most corners.
Doing that really showed me how laggy and floaty Shift is.

Also the difference in the graphics quality is shocking. Ok, 720 vs 1080 but still. Surely it should be better than this.
The Graphics I could live with if the handling was right.

Shift has a good career and excellent engine sounds but for me, unless there's a patch to fix the handling, the disc isn't going back in my machine any time soon.

It's such a shame as I really had high hopes for this game. As it is, I may very well have wasted 40 quid.

Nice write up. You know if you hit the Triangle button it will skip the opening pre-race cut-scene (with the grid girls in it) and dump you right to the race start?

Sorry...just realized it is the X button on the PS3 to skip the race intro cut scene...wish it was an option in the menu!

Hehe. I found that out yesterday after smashing my triangle button for a day like some kind of Rainman without result. Then there was "X".

I had a quick blast on shift last night on the xbox at a friends and was pleasantly surprised. I found the opening movie incredible in comparison to a "how a car is made" video.
I love the visuals on gt5 and some of the effects on here however that said for effects shift has captured the racer feel more. The sensation of speed someone mentioned earlier is a lot more intense than gt5 and 100mph does seem a lot quicker on shift than gt5. I agree i have got bored of the grind by level 27 on gt5 also.

I genuinely love both games in totally different ways and both are very good but I am now in the position of immense temptation of buying my first xbox game in about 6-12 months to race friends.

Helmet cam is also incredible but its weird in that you have to kinda turn as soon as the driver rotates his head rather than where you may normally expect to with a front on view. Once sussed out its cool though.

I've been playing Shift 2 for the last 2 days, and have kind of gotten the hang of it. The physics really threw me off at first, being so used to GT5. Now, I'm racing much better and finally enjoying the game rather than getting irritated with so many race restarts.

The best part of the physics in the game is the crashing. The damage models are awesome too. I was going into a turn too fast in my 240sx yesterday while drifting :scared: and flew off into the sand and my car started flipping, and was totaled . I tried to get back on track with 1 wheel still left on, hehe. When you lose control in Shift 2, you actually fear the consequences of your carelessness. In GT5, 'heh, that 200mph dent will pop out, it's all good.'

Shift 2 is a blast, but I'm sure will die down for me, and I'll be back to GT5 soon enough.

I like that view, but really can't use it while racing. When I first started playing the game, for some reason, it gave me a false sense that my car was starting to turn, so I would actually start my turning a little late and fly off the track. :ouch:

I've been sticking to the hood cam for the most part doing career races, but when I play around, I'll sometimes use the helmet cam.

Graphics in race is so poor, just like playing game 6-7 years ago. 720p? No way! it looks like not higher than 640x480. Everything is blurry. After some time i feel headache because unsuccessful focusing by eyes.
Force Feedback is non-existing in this game (DFP wheel). So called FFB is just like rumble on gamepad. There is no feeling of road. Just random feedback effects. FFB can suddenly disappear at all. In GT5 it means block of front wheel, but in NFS S2 car is still controlled well. WTF?
Complexity of driving made by tend to spin of car with every kick or touch of bots. That's silly. Not every kick should produce spin of car.

No graphics, no physics, no FFB.. Very frustrated by this game :(
There are many interesting tracks in game, but with such issues it's useless...

I know this isn't exactly practical, but what game has the most similar physics to Shift 2? Console, PC, doesn't matter. I'm looking to get an insight into how the game handles without having to buy it (demo would have been helpful).

GRID is the closest i have played to the game, through GRID sucks with a wheel. Though playing GRID still isnt going to give you a real idea of how Shift 2 plays.

So I'm not the only one who is playing GRID at the moment :sly: , I found the pc version for cheap, and I'm alternating it to GTR2 and GT5. GRID now it's my official "quick race game" and it's an enjoyable arcade racer, of course no simulation at all, but I have something else for this. At least I have a couple of titles to play until the first Shift2 patch. If they'll not patch it soon, what about Supercar Challenge?

Dirt is a nice game but there are too many trucks and buggies. I only care about rally cars (in a rally game)

I remember trying to play GRID with the DFGT.... not exactly GT5 quality, but is was reasonably fun.

Grid has some weird standard FFB settings, true, but if you play around a bit you can improve it, this is my configuration at the moment, no floating feeling, car handling is precise now.
