Conservatism

You’re thinking of DeSantis (or maybe Abbott). Cruz has no shot at President.

I get the confusion, though. We have a lot of ******** here in the South that they blend together.
I didn’t say he’s going to be president. I said he wants to be president.

"Take up thy flaming sword and fight this culture war on My behalf" -- a phrase which appears nowhere in the Bible unless you cut out the letters and piece them together like a ransom note.

No. But it always opposes progress. So it's wrong on all progress. Conservatism is only correct when it's protecting something we're doing right.
Who determines what's "right"?

The 20th century is full of examples of society developing the right attitudes on various issues - so much so that there is very little to legitimately fight against in 2023 (relatively speaking). And what there is that is left is not as easy to categorise as right or wrong. Instead of black and white we have shades of grey.

How do we know if a change in the status quo is progress, or a change too far?

Examples could be the Lowell school saga, how we decide what's racist and even our discussion on whether infants should have human rights.

Progressives now, and society 25 years down the line.

Who determines what's "right"?

In the context of my post, really it's just future societies. What I meant was the ideas that stick around and continue to be useful. That could be a bad idea from my perspective or yours. So, for example, the abolition of slavery has become an important idea that our societies are built upon. That would be an example of progress that was "right" as judged by our (future) society. And from that perspective, it was wrong for conservatives at the time to fight (and die) for it.

Yes. No. I don't know. What does it matter? It seems like your expectation is for me to support an argument I never made.
It's not specifically directed at you - more just a general question in this thread. I should have indicated a break in the post to indicate this.

Conservatives are usually mocked for holding views that are antithetical to progress (or for wanting to regress). Progress is almost always seen as a virtue in society - so much so that conservatives can be judged to be on the wrong side of history even before it becomes "history". I'm wondering if a conservative viewpoint is held by the majority of society, does the dynamic change....

More than half of people in Britain believe the death penalty should be returned for sufficiently serious crimes such as serial or mass killing, terrorism and child murder. I still don't think that's a progressive viewpoint while the chance of being wrongly accused and executed remains. So justice by opinion poll doesn't work for me, especially if the folks who brought you the Brexit referendum start to get involved in swaying public opinion.

If conservatism had existed in the Miocene Epoch we'd still be living in trees.

I'm getting Hislop vs Patel vibes.

I always feel calls to bring back the death penalty is a great source of Daily Heil stirrings Tories can use so they can drum up support when flagging with unpopularity.

"If lefties like you had been running the show in 1982 we'd all be speaking Argentinian now" -- some paleocon, probably

Wife just bought a new harness for our dog that has clouds and a rainbow going all the way around, which is clearly visible on top. I’m actually considering how safe it is to go outside with it around here. ****ing hell we are living in these days that it’s something you need to consider and it’s only getting worse. Can only imagine what LGBTQ+ people have to deal with on a regular basis, especially if they are also people of color.

"I'm not a book person and am triggered by the word communism but I want to ban lots of reding material in schools". It says a lot about the people who act on this sick woman's complaints.

I just heard about national conservatism. It's a school of thought that diverges from economic or fiscal conservatism and concentrates on preserving national identity and traditional "family values". (This article says national consevatives also "oppose anti-racism". Hmm...) Guess this might explain why some conservatives no longer sound like conservatives?

Will hold my hands up and say I was duped into thinking in this way.

Judging by Brexit and what's happening in Florida it doesn't seem to "work" for a 21st century society.

It's poorly defined. What is "national identity"? What is national "cultural identity"? It is whatever you apparently want it to be. Taking the US as an example, you can look at the US at the time of founding and take from it some fragment that supports just about any policy or behavior you want to support. If you want to prevent children from seeing people cross dress, you could pull that out of attitudes in the US around that time. If you want to ensure that people can wear whatever clothing they want, you can pull that out of attitudes in the US around that time as well. Which is our "national identity"? Both sides of that issue could claim conservatism.

Mostly what's actually being advocated by this type of "conservative" is a particular flavor (or bastardization) of Christianity or even racism (see immigration in that article). But they know they can't go under these banners officially (separation of church and state, equal protection), at least for now. So they call it "national identity" or "family values" or "traditional" or whatever dog whistle works best to wink and nod to like-minded individuals.

That's the impression I got as well. If you oppose anti-racism, what does that make you?

Conservatives: "Pride has been going on for like 20 years. It was fine. No one really objected or cared."

Lawrence v. Texas would be decided three months after publication of this piece, and laws which criminalized consensual sexual intercourse between adults of the same sex would be deemed unconstitutional.

I like this part:

"The idea is to silence the law's pro forma disapproval of same-sex sex."

The real victim here is the law, you guys. Won't somebody please think of the law?

A law which violates fundamental individual rights and fails to preserve rights in the process shouldn't be on the books, much less be enforced, however seldom. But it was actual real enfocement of law which resulted in its being deemed unconstitutional.

I know I say that modern American conservatism is mental illness, but this having been 20 years ago makes me question whether it should be so qualified.
