Cop deserves a medal

Most interstate highways are 75mph.
You will not see a speed limit greater than 65 anywhere on the eastern part of the country. I-95 is 65 tops, and in many places 55. However, that won't stop New Jersey drivers and Massholes from going 85-90 in bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic.

New Hampshire actually has a minimum speed on highways of 45 mph to keep tractors and other slow vehicles off the roads.

I've only had a few hours road time in the eastern part of the country, so wasn't sure.

I can rephrase and say that most interstates on this side of the country are 75.

Personally, in a car in good condition, with perfectly good brakes, tires that haven't been heat-cycled into uselessness and a proper suspension, 80 and above are perfectly acceptable cruising speeds, given the proper traffic conditions.

But given the condition of some of the clunkers on the road (here... but given the rust I've seen on some cars in my time over in the US, I wager it's no different), I'd be afraid of their drivers going over 20 mph... especially in a non-ABS vehicle, which can start to fishtail at speeds this low in emergency braking.

Ever have a brake failure at 100 mph? It's not funny until after your heart stops doing 200 bpm...

I love Gordon Murray's proposal. A momentum limit. The bigger you are, the slower you have to drive. :D

70mph in Florida on I-75. Get near Miami and the speed limit drops but the traffic speed goes up lol.

Most interstate highways are 75mph.

In my opinion, the majority of cars on the roads in this country don't need to go any faster than that.

Edit: Freeways in Phoenix are 65mph.

Just sayin'. :)

Wow 75, that'd pretty fast. As I said There are no speed limits here past 110km/hr or about 65-ish I think. Most roads are now 100.

55. That's around 90km/hr that would take forever to get around Australia.

Washington is 70mph, Oregon is 65mph, and California is 70mph. That accounts for quite a bit of the Interstate system this side of the Mississippi.

Montana is 80mph if I recall correctly, but no one lives there, same with Utah and those other states.

That's mainly what I'm talking about. With all the large SUV's and Trucks on the roads in this country, those vehicles shouldn't be going any faster than 75.

In fact, I can throw a GT-R into a corner at over 130mph with no issues, but there's no way I'd drive a large SUV on the highway at high speeds. :nervous:

Devil's in the details as they say.

Though, depends on how you want to weight things out, by population or area.

So in a sense, we are both correct.

Heavy vehicles in Australia are fitted with a mandatory mechanical speed limiter at 102km/hr I think. Lots of truck drivers tamper with it but can be defected if it's been tampered with.

When I was there for Spring Training last season I felt like I couldn't avoid traffic. /shrug

Haha really? Was it during the week or weekend? During the weekend everything that isn't Scottsdale seems to be a baron wasteland. Phoenix seems to be mostly just a financial district which would explain it. The only time I had traffic was Monday afternoon (I think) in which we were leaving.. But it wasn't anything like you would get in LA or the Bay Area. I guess I'm biased in that fashion, weekends here your always going to be stuck being some dick doing 10 under.

In my driving history, people who drive slightly faster are usually more aware of their surroundings. Its the slow people that are clueless and unaware of anything. I've never been hit by someone driving to fast, its always the slow person that is unaware of your existence. When fast drivers crash, its usually into a tree or something.

See I've spent most of my time in the Gray area. Although Utah being 80 is surprising to me. I've never seen a speed limit sign in Utah that said 80. Even I-70 is 75mph through Utah unless they've changed it within the last year.

I think most large vehicles here also have a speed limiter. My Aunt's old Chevy Tahoe was limited to 90mph.

I've never seen anything above 65 in Maine, but I suppose some of the northern roads could be higher.

I thought Texas' was 90? Or was that just a few specific roads, rather than all of them?

The only parts that are 80+ are I-10 and I-20 in West Texas. Then you have those little two lane farm roads that are 75 for some reason.
