So England goes into full lockdown from midnight tonight.

Boris Johnson's reasoning for allowing children across the country to go back to school today is that 'every day is important to children's education', while then going on to add that "schools are a vector for spreading the virus". Seriously, what was he thinking? If he had announced this lockdown just 24 hours ago, it would have surely saved hundreds or even thousands of lives. As per usual, it's too little, too late.
Are the UK and the US competing in a "hold my beer" contest in regards to public health? Schools are probably safer than all of those private parties that will still occur.

Lots of people had private parties over Christmas, with their families, ten days ago. Many of us didn't - my eldest came down from university, but she's in our "household bubble" and has a year of student nursing under her belt so isn't a moron - so as not to mix households.

Now it turns out that we did anyway, because all those idiots who exposed their kids to COVID ten days back have just sent them to school to mix with the kids who weren't exposed, exposing their parents too despite their care and less self-centred behaviour over Christmas. Of course that's the risk with schools anyway, but to send them back for one day and then shut the schools when the damage is already done is stupidity and pointlessness personified.

Closing the schools for an extra week post-Christmas would have taken the exposed kids past the 14-day window (make it ten days, in case the morons had NYE parties too), and everyone could be back on January 11 (or January 15) and carried on as normal.

This much was blindingly obvious from the moment they decided to slightly relax the rules for Christmas, which meant that everyone who was already largely ignoring the rules decided that there were no rules for the entire Christmas/Merryneum/New Year period - and so everyone anywhere near their contaminated crotch goblins has also done that even if they haven't.

Looks like the situation in the UK is going to put some F1 races in doubt yet again. The Australian GP is set to be postponed as a result, and I'd expect a few more races to be pushed back or cancelled entirely...

I got an email this morning to confirm that our 3rd year in-person practical labs scheduled for Monday will go ahead... this is in spite of the fact that any student in their right mind will not have moved back to their halls of residence, and public transport is now off limits to all but essential workers. It has, however, been pointed out that no students will be penalised for not attending their labs (i.e. they will get credit whether they show up or not), but that rather begs the question of why are they bothering to run the labs at all, where teaching staff etc. will need to come in anyway... seems like a bonkers idea to me.

Meanwhile, my first day back at work is postponed, but I will be in tomorrow (as I'm the designated safety officer for the day), so instead I get to work in my apartment and listen to my idiot neighbour's heavy metal music. Seriously, home working would be no problem for me if all my neighbours would just 🤬 off (or I lived in a detached property).

Does anyone have personal experience doing workout (crossfit type) while wearing a mask? I'm talking about muscle / blood oxygenation.

I found this study concluding the impact's minimal, which seems to make sense.

Not two days ago BoJo said he was certain schools were safe, then c.3 million kids to go school yesterday and now they're closed again. The fact that GCSE and A-Level exams have already been cancelled shows you exactly how long this one is going on for.

'Your Questions Answered' on the BBC this morning: Charlotte asks, "Can we still go on holiday to Disneyland?" Seriously Charlotte? :ouch:

Schools that haven't done so already will need to shift to a continuous assessment model hence it makes sense to cancel exams as close to the start of term as possible. I don't think it is a direct comment on the length of the lockdown period in itself, but that said, I would not be surprised if this lockdown is at least as long as the last one, which would take us right up to exam time in May. :ill: I sincerely hope that is not the case, but it will likely be March until there is any significant change.

I swear, the dumbasses who ask these questions (and there were plenty the first time around), should have their email addresses exposed for all to see...

Sure, they can go to Disneyland, but they'll be disappointed since the entire state of California is more or less shut down and it wouldn't be much of a holiday. They'd also have to quarantine for 10 days upon arrival at LAX. Sounds like one helluva vacation. Spend what, 15 hours on a plane, then be cooped up in a hotel room for 10 days, then go to Disney and see the parking lot, then turn around to take another 15 plane ride back to the UK. I'm sure the kids will love making memories.

Disneyland Paris ring any bells? Not saying that was Charlotte's intended destination - and I am so not going to see if I can listen again - but there is more than one Disneyland.

Disneyland Paris is closed though.
Shanghai and Tokyo Disneyland are open. Good luck on Charlotte getting to those locales though.

To avoid a double post, I found out that my father is receiving his vaccine tomorrow. He works for a hospital health care system so I guess they are vaccinating everyone (he's also above 65 years old but he is not in the medical field).

...A quick update from South Africa:

Fresh from experiencing the country's worst day in terms of confirmed COVID infections and deaths yesterday, our health minister Dr. Mkhize announced earlier today that the country has secured one and a half million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines from Serum Institute of India, to be shipped in late January and in February - the first shipment will be one million batches and the rest in Feb.

Their rollout plan is a logical one, giving priority to healthcare workers in phase one, then to essential services providers and those in the vulnerable category, such as with comorbidities.

Another thing I learned today was that our country has 1.2 million people "working" in sectors related to healthcare and they would be getting the shots first. Suddenly, 1.5 million doses sound rather inadequate...

Both of my parents have it.

My parents are elderly Trump supporters who view masks as an infringement of their rights and subscribe to a machismo view of not being pushed around by a silly virus.

Damn, sorry to hear this (all parts), hope they push through it

It's been confirmed to be in Australia in quarantined returned citizens as well but luckily it's not out in the public.... yet.

So it only took from the 22nd December to 7th January for the UK strain to get out of quarantine :banghead:. Hopefully it doesn't spread.

And a close call in WA.

Sorry to hear about your parents, @Danoff. I'm certain you tried your best to inform them and keep them safe but to no avail. I hope they both recover fully from this and learn at least something from their experience.

I have experience working out in a mask, weights and light cardio. My findings are that in general it sucks.

I've done a full hour on a bike in moderate to heavy cardio. It's not enjoyable but at the same time, it's not too difficult unless you have breathing issues (if you do, don't work out in public areas).
