Could we be reaching herd immunity or some degree of it?

I would be surprised to reach herd immunity as I think the capability of doing so has passed. Time will tell if another wave spikes up numbers in the future.
I'm not the best person to comment on this in this thread, but I don't think herd immunity is a simple question or answer. With the amount of vaccination including boosters and the overall number covid cases with alpha, delta, and omicron, the public around most of the world has had a lot of covid exposure. The US has had almost 80M covid cases that we know about (and approaching 1M deaths). 76% of the US has had at least one dose of a vaccine.

I don't know which variants he's talking about. If he's talking about Omicron BA.2, that one causing a wave where BA.1 is not seems... well not impossible but it doesn't strike me as a guarantee either.

Sure, there may be more in the future. But I don't think herd immunity is usually discussed in terms of whether we have it for some unknown future virus (even if that virus is a variant). Of course we don't have herd immunity against the future.

It'd be nice of him to provide some links. Hell, even the names of these variants would be a start.

Also, a Facebook post from someone whose profile pic is them in their car wearing sunglasses immediately makes me skeptical.

He actually does work in the medical field, not sure exact position.

Currently there is a study being done in NYC where there is a new variant seen in Rats but not seen in humans.
Which could be possible that it could be where it's spreading in animals again.

That brings a whole new meaning to "ratlickers".

No nothing for me.
My wife is feeling tired and a bit off tonight but that could also be her MS.

Either way we are both going tomorrow to get a PCR test to be on the safer side.
Well I was cleared in that test on Wednesday, woke up this morning feeling pretty bad. And a RAT test confirms positive, don't think I'll bother going for a PCR as it was almost inevitable and it's very rare for me to get sick at all so I'm pretty sure it's Covid.

Don't know how but thankfully my wife is still clear and symptom free so I really really hope it stays that way.

The other positive is I could still taste my espresso (so that's something) this morning though I have no appetite.

Has anyone heard how @Joey D and his family are getting on?

At least her family and some of her friends believed the science. And so did she, once it was too late. She pulled a Hana Horka.

In a few hours I will go get my first RT-PCR test done.
Not because I am feeling any symptoms but as a test to see how fast I get the results.
For my trip I need a negative test 48 hours before departure.
To make matters worse that I need to do a test on a Sunday.

I called up a few places and the state community place said it would take between 24-72 hours, and said that it cannot guarantee results before the trip.
Then there are a few other places that I can go to but it's the price that changes.
One place can have it done within an hour maybe 2 hours. The other one would be up to a day.

For me I hope that it changes but I am just thinking I might be spending anywhere from 120-200$ for a test for a flight.

Cook Islands braces after Covid-positive traveller

This would seem to be something of a test case for handling the virus, albeit at a late stage (hopefully) of the pandemic. If there is community spread of Omicron among a very heavily vaccinated population - with no previous exposure - what does this mean for actual sickness, hospitalizations & deaths? If vaccinations result in no illness or mild symptoms, what's the worry? Is it reasonable to have restrictive measures under these circumstances? Is it preferable to focus on carefully protecting the potentially vulnerable? It's like going back to the earliest stages of the pandemic with the benefit of 2 years of experience & prophylactic measures in place.

I may be in a bit of a uhh situation.
Supposed to get an RT-PCR test done for international flight and has to be within 48 hours of the flight that leaves the country. To make things even more of a situation I need that test to be no earlier than 2 pm Sunday for a 2 pm Tuesday flight.
Most of the testing places here are stopping Sunday testing.
Local Walgreens/CVS/Hyvee have results in the 3-5 day range which is past what I already need.
Which is starting to make me see that I will have to do a rapid test at the airport either after 2 pm Sunday or go on Monday and spend 200$ for that.

Didn't know it was so frustrating to try and get anything booked.

There has to be something available. I was in an out in 5 minutes, unscheduled, for a free rapid test a few weeks ago.

For my wife's conference, we could pay $180 for a test about 5 minutes away from where we'll be staying or we could drive 30 minutes into the city, which we were going to do anyway, to have it done for free.

Point is, there has to be a place that is available on Monday.

Edit: Free testing at the armory, M-F, 11a-6p

Woke up with a slightly sore, scratchy throat this morning. No fever or anything else to go with it. Felt fine otherwise. End of the day now and it's pretty much gone. Had me thinking for a bit, since I went out to eat with some family on Saturday. All good I guess? 🤔

I got an email from a work colleague who is currently on sabbatical due to mental health issues.

He’s ended up with Omicron and self isolating, so not really going to help him mentally as he lives alone. He’s fully jabbed up so he’s taking it as well as to be expected. I just hope he has the brains to seek help if he starts to get worse otherwise he will be all alone and nobody to check on him.

I’m going to fire off emails every other day just to make sure he’s ok.

@Shaun not seen anything since his last post here. Hoping he’s ok and just busy with other stuff.

I'm fine thanks mate.
Due out of self isolation on Friday providing I'm symptom free which I am already. It went pretty well for me, had one day when I felt pretty rough with what felt like a really bad head cold and just a little off on each day either side of that.

It was weird, the bad symptoms came on really quick but disappeared just as quick. I was lying on the couch watching YouTube videos and I could feel within an hour feeling crap to almost symptom free in an hour.

In even better news it looks like my wife may have dodged it altogether. As per our self isolation rules if she tests clear today (which she has on a RAT) she can leave self isolation tomorrow. How we managed that is amazing as I've still had to help her getting into bed, showering etc. We took all precautions available masks, gloves, sanitizer etc but still can't believe it.

So back to work and normal life for me on Friday.

Great news.

A little over 10 days in and I'm still dealing with COVID. I keep coughing and I'm very short of breath if I attempt to do anything remotely active. Even grocery shopping the other day took it out of me, which certainly sucked. I really do hate this and with each passing day, I loathe the COVIDiots more and more.

I'm also pretty disappointed in the federal government and Pfizer for continuing to delay vaccines in children under 5. There's absolutely no reason to wait two months for some data on a third dose when that third dose wouldn't even be in the timeline of things. If a kid were to get vaccinated today, it would be the end of April before they needed a third dose if they needed it at all.

Good to hear from you @Joey D, hopefully you fully recover soon mate.

As per my above post my wife has now unfortunately tested positive. Her RAT test was clear but her mentioning a bit of a sore throat was enough to go get her a PCR test yesterday. Result confirmed my fear this morning.

She's a trooper and certainly won't complain but with her MS I'm a little more concerned than I was with our sons and myself. There is an infusion available for MS patients here which if had within five days helps with symptoms. Her neurologist's office opens at 9 so we'll give him a call and talk options then.

Local cases have come way down recently, deaths in the single digits. Curious if it's the same for anyone else in the states.
I believe it is the same for many, most or even all other states. But the press does report 10 states with hospitals still at or over capacity. And Dr. Fauci wags his finger and says there could still be aggressive new variants outbreak at any moment. Many governors including my own seem anxious to roll back mandates, but there are still communities which will want to keep them around longer. I sincerely hope the end of the pandemic is nearing. But I'm still planning on getting my booster next week and continuing to wear my mask in public.

Thanks.

As for your wife, I'm not sure if you have something like COViMS in Australia or not. Right now, I would imagine it has the most complete set of data regarding patients with MS who've been infected with COVID so you could at least see what to expect and have it backed up by data. Hopefully, she was able to get one of the infusions that are currently available. I'm not sure what ones are authorized in Australia, but at least there are a few treatment options available. I know those patients in the health system I work at have had positive outcomes when they've been able to get the infusions within a certain time frame.

If she's unable to get an infusion, there are oral treatments that are available as well. Hopefully, her doctor is able to determine if any of those will work as well.
