It occurs to me now that someone is going to go for a poisoned handshake at a Trump, Bernie, and Biden rally. Possibly also at campaigns for congressional seats.
Is it too late for Hillary to join the 2020 Democrat nomination race?

Wouldn't it be easier to do that, with an actual poison?

I have no idea. Maybe.

In this case though, the poison would be potentially undetectable on the person carrying it, and quite possibly non-lethal, and would pose a serious health risk to the target.

It is. However, in the event no candidate attains a majority during the primaries, there is a path for Hillary to win the nomination at the convention.
It is also possible that Biden may remove himself from the process due to health reason.

In real time news:
Gov. Inslee of Washington State has determined a 5-8 day doubling number in the state. He acknowledges there may be thousands of infections despite only 162 confirmed cases. He says he is within one day of announcing things like forced cancellations, closures and quarantines. IMO this is overdue. But our guv likes to consult down the chain first to ensure his orders can and will be followed.

I mean, maybe... seems pretty far out there... someone would have to contract the virus, show no symptoms, be tested positive (so they knew they had it) and then be able to be within travel distance of the person they wanted to infect, then make their way to go and see them and then be able to touch them... all without being caught and showing visible symptoms... I'd imagine if you wanted to take out a candidate, in the USA, you've got better options

Spreading the virus at a rally, and then trying to press the flesh with a candidate seems pretty easy actually. I would imagine that handshakes will be pre-screened.

Italian death toll jumps by nearly 200
The official number of fatalities from the coronavirus outbreak in Italy has risen from 463 to 631 in 24 hours.

This disease is going to ravage countries with aging populations. :indiff:
I don't think they in Italy are even treating people over 60 anymore except minimally, if I read the earlier posts by Mr Swanson correctly. The old are now dead they are now treating younger people. They are at 200% hospital capacity, with doctors and nurses falling ill.

Circulating on redit

I knew our beds per head was bad but to see our icu beds that much lower than italy is crazy.

You also have to think about the amount of people who will have adverse outcomes (including death) indirectly through the stretching of icu/anaesthetics resources.

In some areas they aren't considering them for treatment in an icu bed, if reports are to be believed.

In the UK this is called "ward based ceiling of care", which is usually reserved for patients who would be thought not to benefit from icu care (mainly the very frail). To put a blanket age restriction that low....well I've never seen it.

* Spoke to a few junior doctor friends of mine and they say they are already noticing pressure

In more serious news, New York state had as many new cases of COVID-19 as the whole of China, despite only have 1.4% of the population of China.

That's provided that China are still counting and report cases, of course...

Here in Germany we had the first 2 victims. Confirmed cases now above 1200.

Watching this now:

My Dad's friend is still in hospital in Spain, and there's no word yet on when he might get out. He has been moved and will see doctors tomorrow, but it sounds like he is feeling fine and so hopefully he will be seen and released tomorrow.

Their flight is on Friday and so any delays could be a serious problem. Spain's coronavirus epidemic is picking up pace, but I am hoping that the hospitals can cope and that my Dad's mate doesn't either get any worse and is able to leave hospital and get that flight on Friday.

It goes without saying that we are extremely worried about what might happen if, for any reason, my Dad's mate can't get that flight. My Dad would be in a horrible (and horribly timed) position of either leaving his best mate behind, or finding himself stuck in Spain with expired insurance and a mate in hospital just as the coronavirus tsunami breaks on the Spanish healthcare system...

I don't fully grasp the logistics of what I'm about to suggest....but could you drive down there and get him? It appears to be about 1,600 miles...but I've done more than that in the USA before in a couple days.

For NY most of the cases have been in New Rochelle though a few sporadic cases are popping up in adjacent counties and in the city itself. So far Cuomo has been given emergency powers and the national guard is being deployed to New Rochelle to assist with containment. The company I work for also just put out the word to work from home if able, which had already been recommended by the state. So far no public event bans though I'm getting more concerned that more drastic actions could be taken soon.

Sadly not, but my sister and I figured that his insurance is up on Friday and he didn't realise that... he now knows he simply cannot stay beyond Friday irrespective of what happens with his pal. We're just hoping his mate is well enough to get the flight too.

I thought China was on a decline though, with the recovery rate exceeding the infection rate?

It is... but I'm finding it stretching credulity that a nation of 1.35 billion can register not one new case of the virus outside of Hubei province (population 0.058 billion) for three days in a row now. That is... beyond efficient. Scotland (population 0.0054 billion) had 4 new cases today (up from 23 yesterday)... yet China (not even including Hubei province) has 246 times more people and yet there has (allegedly) not been a single new case among them for three whole days (despite the fact that 4 provinces outside of Hubei had between 1000-9999 cases previously)?!

Now that is amazing.

I doubt they've achieved herd immunity and I doubt they've developed a vaccine. So how does an epidemic just come to full stop after going through only 80,757 people in a land of 1.35 billion? When people are allowed to travel and work again, must there be a 2nd wave?

It's China. Information is available at the discretion of the government.

I can't help thinking that proper hand hygiene is an underrated piece of at advice as several media outlets are preoccupied warning against public gatherings. Don't get me wrong, keep your distance to strangers etc,. but the risk of touching one's own face in public places isn't being stressed enough. Then wash your hands thoroughly first thing when you enter your own home, and keep in mind that cell phones are rarely any more clean than public door handles.

It shocks me at the number of people who are just grubby. At work, I constantly see people just splash their hands under the water in the bathroom and call it good. It's disgusting. Even if you didn't get anything on your hands, washing them when you go to the bathroom is a perfect opportunity to give them a cleaning.

I've washed my hands so much over the past month or so that they're red, flaky, and hurt. I've been using O'Keeffe's Working Hands, which helps but I'm still washing my hands a ton throughout the day. I mean is it really so hard to wash after you go to the bathroom, before and after you eat, and if you've been around a large group of people? After every meeting, I wash my hands because god only knows what's on those tables and disgusting people cough and sneeze without covering their mouth properly.

The only time I dont properly wash my hands is when a place has one of those stupid automatic sinks that only give you about 5 seconds of water after spending a minute to trigger it.

It seems to me that the bigger problem may be subconscious touching of your face. Even if you wash your hands throughly at strategic moments, but what happens in-between? I went to Costco yesterday (no TP) & I noticed that whereas a week ago Costco had employees "wiping down" the shopping carts this time there was nothing. I was fully conscious of what I was touching, but realized after a while that it's very difficult to ensure no potential contamination. Everything you touch - products on the shelves - could presumably be contaminated. When you then touch your wallet, your credit card, your pockets, your cell phone without first washing your hands, you could potentially transfer virus to those objects & then later to your face. It's difficult to fully protect yourself without indulging in petty extreme behaviour & hard to justify that behaviour unless you're in a "high risk" environment.
