in my head: play GT5 anyway.

Well they don't owe us anything for the outage because:

15. WARRANTY DISCLAIMER AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITYNo warranty is given about the quality, functionality, availability or performance of Sony Online Services, or any content or service offered on or through Sony Online Services. All services and content are provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” with all faults. SCEA does not warrant that the service and content will be uninterrupted, error-free or without delays. In addition to the limitations of liability in Sections 1, 2, 11 and 13 of this Agreement, SCEA expressly disclaims any implied warranty of merchantability, warranty of fitness for a particular purpose and warranty of non-infringement. SCEA assumes no liability for any inability to purchase, access, download or use any content, data or service...

But hopefully they give us something for our inconvenience. For instance I downloaded a payed for movie on GTTV, but I cannot watch it now when I want to.

I can almost guarantee they'll do something for the PS+ subscribers and probably nearly certain they'll also do a little something for the rest of the PSN users as well.

All I want them to do, is to make sure that this doesn't happen again. I'm sure that they will lose at least 4 or 5 of my socom clan mates if another long outage happens. They all want to get rid of their PS3s anyway, and something like this might be just enough to put them over the edge and go strictly xbox. I on the other hand use my PS3 for more then just gaming, so I'll keep my regardless of how bad the PSN is.

This. I hardly ever buy anything off the PSN anyways, and don't have PS+. So as long as I know PSN won't be down for an extended period of time again in the future, I'd be happy with that.

Well to be fair, they can't literally guarantee something like this never happens again. As soon as you connect a device to the internet all bets are off. However, Sony has clearly proven that their first attempt at making a reasonably secure commercial network environment was wanting.

So probably not an intended consequence, but this attack (regardless of who perpetrated it) in the long run will end up improving the PSN.

I think it really comes down to the fact that this is a free service, so in essence you get what you pay for (unless your on plus). Since launch PSN hasn't had any outages this severe so I would say its reasonable to give them a break the first time round regardless of the cause. They want it operational as much as you do because they can hear the cash registers ringing up 360 sales with every day that goes by!

It really hasn't been an easy ride for the PS3 has it, even 5 years on!

Robin.

The sooner the better. 👍

I actually miss not being able to sign in and I don't even care much for online play; same deal happened with LIVE (although I was the one without service then).

This is doubtful. PS+ users already get bonuses and most PSN users don't care that much that it's down.

Amen to that.. Surely people can find better things to do with their lives while Sony sorts this problem out. Is a good thing that they rebuilding the whole thing since IMO, online racing is average at best. Will be good is fix all those "you been disconnected from the server" issues.

For those of you that are in a racing series or even run one like I do, this outage is frustrating for me because I'm not able to communicate with everyone. But on the other hand they can't sign in either so....lol. Whenever the Sony forums get back up I'm going to recommend that we move all of the racing series updates and general talk to this forum. That way if this happens again, we can still bs and at least talk to each other. If indeed the network and the Sony forums are back up again on Tuesday at the earliest, our series races on Wednesday. That is not a lot of time to get organized. I have updated our thread on here but the problem is no one in the series knows about the GTPlanet thread, thus I can't get through to them lol. By the way, it didn't start out as my series, the founder has been mia long before the current outage. I decided to keep it going. I'm just rambling on aren't I? lol

Well I take away the "almost guarantee" comment as stating such is pretty much meaningless. So I'll correct my comment to read that in my opinion I think they will compensate PS+, if not all PSN users, in some fashion for the outage.

Yea, would be fine if they pimp the whole PSN a bit. :sly:

But your problem seems to be on your side. I had the same problems (disconnections after 0-1min, lagging cars, etc.) & fixed it with the following guide: The ULTIMATE ultimate guide to fixing your NAT

I'm pretty sure that most PSN users care that it's down. Everyone I know in real life is pretty aggrivated about it. I wouldn't doubt if several of them sell their PS3s over this. You can't have a billion dollar industry brought down for a week, because of some screw up. No matter what people say about this whole thing, this is sony's fault, and it should never have happened. I'm sure this will effect Sony more then people think. I know alot of people who bash PSN anyway( and all of them have a PS3), and this will certainly give them plenty of more fuel to do so. They are already so far behind xbox live, that this does nothing but really hurt them. First they waste all of that money and time on HOME, instead of making the PSN better, and now their network is offline for a week.
In all honesty I will not be getting the next gen playstation on launch day like I have in the past. I will be waiting to see what they do different the next time, and hopefully it is a complete reworking of the PSN, because it just doesn't compare to what microsoft has to offer.

That guy is probably wrong about the DNS amplification attack. That attack is so old and well known that there is no way the PSN can go down this easily. Besides, it's the kind of thing that can be fixed in a day.

Nah, whatever the problem is, it's certainly a lot more complicated in order for it to last this long.

Interesting theory about PORTAL 2.

Agreed. That was something that hasn't been considered from any angle on here. I also love the fanboy comments he made, just to make the people who are whinging about going to the 360 from the PS3 to make them wake up to themselves (and yes, there have been heaps of comments in the PSN outage threads like this...."oh PSN is down, if it stays down I'm going to the 360") so good observations by him. 👍

That story everyone is using to set the Tuesday timeline...was posted on other sites a day ago lol.......yall crack me up.....just because it says it was posted today on that site means they put it up today....story is already a day old....so going by that...psn should be back monday.....maybe in a short while....could be the reason for the lack of update on us.playstation.com.....heres hoping anyway

At least he's offering up something more than "Anonymous did it" because of their message to all PSN users about George Hotz. It could very easily be something as simple as a DNS amplification - Sony's unofficial explanation is that hackers attacked PSN administrator/development accounts. Those accounts will have a hell of a lot more power than conventional PSN IDs.

Say, for example, a forum member starts trolling. They cause trouble, but the moderators can clean it up pretty quickly. But let's say they then try and get into a moderator's account (and someone did indeed try before I gave it up). If they knew what they were doing, they could use the moderator's powers to wreak a hell of a lot more damage on the forums and it would take longer to clean it up. It's the same deal here - if someone tapped into an adminstrator's PSN ID, with access to everything that adminstrator had, everything goes to hell in a handbasket. Even if it's something that can be cleaned up quickly, Sony won't put PSN back online until they know the security of their accounts is watertight.

Agreed. That was something that hasn't been considered from any angle on here.
As far as I know, there has never been the ability to network across platforms. And if there has been, then it hasn't been attached to a major release like PORTAL 2. This is new territory for all involved.

Yes, I did lilke that comment from him, too. Especilly the way he referred back to the HALO outages.

Hey all, there is a locked thread in the GT5 forum where someone mentioned they'd spoken to a Sony rep over the phone who told them Monday we'd all have PSN back, and that Japan already has it. I directed him here via PM maybe he has more to share. It could be incorrect info over the phone from a Sony drone, but who knows? I thought it might be relevant since almost everything we hear seems to be rumor.

I'm not sure about this, I can't find anything at all on Google about PSN being back up anywhere, and I'm sure it would be mentioned fairly heavily. Hmmm possibly just another rumor. :(

Yeah I kinda figured this might be fluff. I dunno though because similar rumors are spreading on other forums, saying it could be a matter of hours. Oh well I've waited this long...

I think I'm just literally going crazy, which is sad and I should be put down...I think the rumors are turning out to be false.

The reason the thread I started called Ongoing PSN Outages was locked was because everyone started arguing with each other. But, I did hear PSN would possible be up tomorrow, but who knows.

Probably someone trying to make out that they know more than they actually do. I wouldn't go believing anyone who says it's back up until you actually can get back on yourself.

Sony officials have yet to issue an ETA for when the network might reappear. However, the source speaking to PlayStation Universe claims that Japanese servers should start reappearing on Monday, with U.S. and E.U. servers popping back up on Tuesday.
