And I will still stick with the PS3, not jump ship. Unless Kaz was to move the next GT to the next-gen MS offering over the Sony offering.

IIRC, PD is a subsidiary of Sony so there is no chance that will happen.

It'll be back before then. That first link was stupid, a lot like reading a post in this thread. The second link was a little better, but still we all knew it wouldn't be 100% back online right away.
Agreed. I would think that PS store and/or PSN will be first with Q either same time or bloody close behind. These are the 3 killing their share prices atm.

P.S - Is that Judas Priest's Rob Halford as your avatar? If so, 👍 to JP.

I said it with a lot of tongue-in-cheek.
Polyphony Digital, Inc. is an internal video game developing company of Sony Computer Entertainment and is part of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. The studio was originally known as Poly's Entertainment, however after the success of Gran Turismo they were granted greater autonomy and their name changed to Polyphony Digital.

Hopefully there will be some significant changes made to the store and we will be surprised with what they have accomplished, with working 24/7.

Yes, some of the things I have read sound very promising if in fact they are true. Once PSN returns we should have a much improved service. The added security and features make the wait a little more bearable.

This may be a dumb question, but is it possible that games can be updated without PSN up?

Yes games will still update with PSN down.

I'm just curious as to how that works. NASCAR The Game 2011 had a minor update without even an announcement. Is the data transferred via a patch vs. an update too large to administer without PSN?

Pretty much so. Sony farm the running of the network to 3rd parties I believe. I'm not an expert on the matter, there's probably people out there who can inform you better than I can.

That Kei car race on the kart track was pretty fun. It would be nice if they'd extend that one. Then again I ran it to death already.

Every time I look (forums, chat, etc.) there's someone saying they talked to a Sony worker over the phone who told them blah blah date, one date mentioned was today that PSN would be back up. Though the conversations always seem to be erroneous.

Then there is the greedy insurance company refusing to cover a claim because the owner forgot to lock a door. Some areas, people still leave their doors open without thinking twice. I know people who had to put a lot of effort into not leaving keys in the ignition, because their area used to not be infested with thieves.

Then there is the thief who presses charges against the homeowner because the homeowner shot said thief in his (_|_) as he was running away from the house or car
!

head to Texas or Louisiana. totally legal.

I have two issues with Sony about this entire PSN drama.

1) Now I understand why they went after the firmware issue so aggressively. They obviously knew the risks to their network(s) an open firmware spec would offer. That seems like a massive issue that Sony choose to "resolve" in the wrong way.

2) Communication. We live in a age of direct communication from a brand to consumers (via twitter, facebook, blogs, etc etc). To be fair Sony is Japanese company and they are a few years behind the social media curve (as are most Asian business) but still. Their lack of any type of real communication/relationship with their users is shocking. Sure they have a blog and some nicely staged press conferences but it's 2011, not 2001, that doesn't cut it anymore.

That brings me to another point that I've been thinking for some time now but now it's perfectly clear. How disconnected the Japanese game world is from the larger game world globally. PD has displayed this for sometime and GT5 is a perfect example of a game set in 2004 paradigms. Now this may be (one of) the appeal of Japanese games for many (I get that, I have friends who are Japanese game freaks and admit this) but when you are playing on a global stage you need to change your communication, design paradigms and approach (at least adapt to said markets outside of Japan/Asia). PD doesn't seem to understand this at all and Sony only acts on it half heartedly.

I'm still undecided is this will tarnish the Playstation brand world-wide. While in this country XBOX generally is the preferred platform (I switched about a year ago) globally the XBOX is barely a blip on the Playstation's radar. I'm sure there will be a decline in PS3/PSN usage in North America after this entire thing passes but globally I doubt their will be any difference (which brings me to another point about Sony's approach and disinterest in the North American market...but I've ranted enough).

I still have my PS3. I keep it for one game... the one we are all here for. As much as I'd like not to deal with the PS3 anymore I will always own one/buy a playstation as long as Gran Turismo is exclusive to it, which most likely means always sadly.

When the PSN comes back I'll make sure neither of the two accounts have a CC attached to them (it will be pre-paid cards form now on) because I'm sure once the PSN is back up it will be an even bigger target to the kooks (hackers is too good of a term for those responsible) than it was prior.

Anyone who thinks that this issue will be over for Sony once the PSN comes back is lying tho themselves. THis is only the start for Sony and the kooks who want to kill the Playstation...

I was wondering if this might crack on until E3.
Looks like it might just do that. Interesting.

I would have to respectfully disagree with this bit, XBox sales world wide have shown that it is a very popular bit of kit.
Not starting an Xbox vs PS3 debate, there is no place for that amongst real gamers.

Sony should be worried about the impact of all this and the crowds that will jump ship to MS. But the reverse happened in 2008 and it could all happen again in the future.

I am very fortunate to own both consoles and there is very little between them in terms of spec and overall ability. But not everyone is in this position and this kind of thing will influence people's buying decision.

I expect the PSN to be back soon better than ever. They will have overhauled the system with new gimmicks and bells and whistles and hopefully it will be the most secure system it can be.

2) Communication

^^That

More than anything, that is grinding my gears. No real communication at all, the odd blog post which rarely tells us anything relevant. I am a patient kinda guy I like to think, but i'm starting to feel a bit like a 2nd class citizen with Sony now.

I'm not one to moan, and I will be as pleased as anyone else when PSN is back up but it wouldn't hurt for Sony to have better communication with the people.

I've not seen numbers of XBOX vs. PS3 in about 6 months but from what I remember in Japan XBOX vs. PS3 is maybe 1 to 40 per household, in asia in general it was about 1 to 10 per household, Europe was around 1 to 5.

On a personal aside...I have alot of family in Asia. I don't know a single person, gamers included, that own a XBOX in Asia (i.e Taiwan, Singapore, Shanghai and Japan) but all of them own a PS3 and/or PSP, even those who aren't gamers (grandparents have a PS3 or at least PS2 for when the kids come over). Now keep in mind PC gaming (MMOs) are still bigger for most in Asia but when it comes to consoles it's the PS3.

Now to be fair to the XBOX those that have them in Asia and some of Europe...when asked consider themselves "more hardcore gamers".

Outside of North America there seems to be large XBOX install bases in the UK (Ireland and England) and Spain (why I'm not sure?).

The next Patch for NTG2011 for PS3 is on hold until PSN is back up.

I've never once seen someone say they spoke to someone over the phone.

The news is getting out there isn't it? Seems like it's working ok to me. They don't need to post it anywhere else but their blog.

May 31.....wow this must be some serious stuff!

Hope it gets back online soon....

They said all along they hoped the have full restoration by the end of the month. Services will be rolled out in waves, not all at once. Online play should still be back up soon, at least we hope.

Dang May 31st? I'm going to be very rusty in GT5 online, Black Ops online, and Madden 11 online lol. On the flip side I'm ranking up nicely online in Dead Space 2 on the 360.
