Here's the problem I have with the Indy 500 issue. A lot of people were against Danica Patrick because while she was the top story of the race, she didn't technically win the Indy 500. Dan Wheldon won the race. This asshole in the beautiful city of Miami gave out an E-mail on "WindTunnel With Dave Despain" was talking about that she had a rookie performance and was completely overhyped. Okay, Danica didn't win the race. She was determined to win and gave it her very best. Hell, she lead about what, 18 laps? She runs out of fuel pressure and has to back off. The pit team had no idea on how much fuel she'll be able to go on. So who do you credit the loss to? Danica for trying to conserve as much fuel as possible, or the pit crew for not thinking hard enough about her situation on track?
For you Champ Car fans, let me see if I can bring up a certain memory. Do you remember... the Champ Car race at Michigan in 1999? Max Papis lead a huge chunk of the race, but on the very last lap, ran out of fuel and was sent to some lower position, leaving the fight for the win to Michael Andretti and Juan Pablo Montoya in a drag race. Danica held on as much as she could no matter what anyone daresay. I thought she had a chance to win the race, but you have to remember that not everything works out well in racing. Nothing is staged in racing. Just because Danica Patrick was the big story doesn't mean she's supposed to win the race. The 23-year old did all she could to win the race, and damn it to hell, I'm proud of Danica Patrick. I wanted her to win, but a Top 10 would be good enough for me. I was proven wrong, as instead of a Top 10, she makes it into the Top 5, just missing the podium. She's a champion to me. She didn't win, but really gave her best. Danica did better than most other ladies who competed at Indy, namely Janet Guthrie and legend Lyn St. James. I think she did really well even if she didn't win.
