Too expensive. But I feel the sentiment. It's one of the classiest. I wouldn't mind picking up a used one in about ten years.

Hell, if you really want to know I wouldn't even mind a used SL500 of that generation. That car in all it's variations (SL500/SL600/SL55/SL65) is just pure automotive pornography.

Agreed - I'd love one too - but the problem is that they debuted for 2003, and the average price of an '03 today - four years later - is still $57200! The things are just priced out of anyone's reach, and if I had the requisite $94800 for a brand new one I can think of a lovely used Ferrari I'd rather have...

Can they be converted?

Yeah, they can and to my knowledge are being converted (most of that work seems to happen in Queensland).

Usually Left-hand drive cars can't be registered here as far as I know.

You can only register LHD's that are 30 years or older.

Ouch. What's it like to live in a Veyronless country?
One would assume that someone with enough money to buy and maintain a Veyron has enough money to buy off whatever city, county and country officials that must be "donated to" in order to use the car in the country.

Doug wants Veyron.

I agree. Hell, what city doesn't want the satisfaction of knowing one of it's citizens own such a car?

What city doesn't want the tax revenue generated by the registration of such a car? Here in Atlanta, sales tax is seven percent - that's six figures for one of our ugly license plates. The city might as well start encouraging rich citizens to buy the damn things.

He can spend 4 days (a little less than) on each valve, each cylinder, each turbo and each gear.

Pointless facts for the win.

That would depend on the region you are in. In the US for most regions (states & counties), the registration costs are not much different whether you are registering a million dollar car or a $500 POS. In Texas it costs me about $50 to register what some would consider to be a relatively expensive car – and if someone registered a Veyron, it would cost them about $50 as well.

Sales taxes are where you can pay a premium, but sales tax goes to the region where the car is sold or where the seller has it currently registered in. So if you bought a Veyron outside of that region and brought it in, it wouldn't financially benefit the region you brought it into. Of course, outside the US, there is no telling what kind of special tax laws might exist.

However, even if you bought the Veyron from a dealer or someone in the same region, or were in a region that forced you to pay special taxes, or even if they could receive the sales tax, you would have to live in a VERY low economical region where even a fee of about $200,000 would affect the economy so much as to make them look the other way.

As suggested, the type of person who would purchase a Veyron in the first place will likely have a great deal of political connections such that certain regional laws can and do get circumvented without too much trouble.

Today i was going home and a blue porsche 997 turbo flew past me, what a nice car.

Wow, I didnt know people loved these cars that much. Seriously, I see an AMG Merc almost every day. I only see them in black though...
I think the SL65 AMG would look best in red.

Good luck servicing and maintaining a 30 year old, 64 valve, 16 cylinder, quad turbo, 7 speed DSG, supercar! :sly: 👍
Exactly! While the value of many expensive sports cars certainly drop significantly over the years (until they become desirable classics), the cost of owning them usually increases!

Ferrari's are especially well known for their incredibly high maintenance costs, and often need complete rebuilds every few thousand miles... often costing more than what you may have paid for it used.

Insurance can also be a killer depending on where you live and your driving record, and the type of policy you have.

So if you own one, and couldn't afford it when it was new... then you may find that even if it was given to you for free, you might not be able to afford to own it.

Sales taxes are where you can pay a premium,

Yeah. That was my point. But sales tax is typically factored in when you get the license plates.

 Obviously. You're missing the point though: the taxes are high. That's all I was saying.

Big difference between an AMG Mercedes and an SL65, my man.

Only if the car is bought in that region.. which is the point I was clarifying.

:grumpy: No need to roll your eyes there young fella. I didn't miss your point. Unlike you, I was clarifying that sales tax is different than registration, and because the Veyron would be bought from a different region, there would likely be little to no monetary value in allowing them to circumvent the law as far as registration fees are concerned.

As Toronado suggested, it would be more likely that the kind of person that could own a Veyron would also have the kind of political and/or financial influence to possibly circumvent any regional restrictions that might otherwise apply.

Oh yea, I saw an unusual Skyline R34 today. In the rear right corner where it normally says 'v-spec' etc.. this one had a GT and I think a red box with a silver star inside or a red R. I dont think it had a rear diffuser either...

Sounds like a GT-T to me. The badge says GT then the extra "T" is in the red box. The GT-T is one step down from a GTR, only RWD and it has a 2.5 turbo straight six.

Indeed but alas that's the only photo I've got. I only photographed the car because it looked interesting and I thought someone here might be interested; I'm not big into cars before 1980 as everyone is aware.
Yeah. The closes thing I could find was the 34' 452D fleet wood sedan:

Nice looking car:tup:

That's the closest thing I could find, too, but since custom coachbuilding was still alive & well back then, this could really be just about anything. :indiff:

Oddball stuff this week:

Volvo Coupe

No wonder it was forgotten. That was no way to honor the P1800.

Land Rover Range Rover

Really just posting for the color. I had no idea that the LR demographic crossed over with the ricer crowd.

Mercedes-Benz G500 ragtop

Posted earlier (I try not to repeat myself), but now with the front license plate. Cute, but transparently fake. I can't imagine what that exact plate would have cost in Europe.

Mercedes-Benz 300CE

Predecessor to the CLK? Much more stately here compared to the current version, but a convertable 300CE would have looked ghastly.

There's a yellow one in Denver that I see quite often, but it's running stock 96-~00 HSE wheels, not the present ones. I thought it was unique. How odd!

I can't imagine what that exact plate would have cost in Europe.

It'd be impossible - the vast majority of European countries don't allow all letters, Germany included.

They made a convertible 300CE - have you ever seen one, or were you speaking theoretically? They're rare and expensive for what they are, but Atlanta being what it is as far as Mercedes ownership, I see one relatively frequently. They're probably on AutoTrader.

The CLK-GTR is incredible, but since only 35 were made it's hard to compare it to mass-produced stuff like the SL, or the more brilliant CLK55.

I think Toronado would also have to be talking about the SuperSports and original CLK GTRs. The Roadsters were obviously far from being the best thing Mercedes-Benz ever built.
