Sorry, I can't stand Project Kahn stuff. Good spot though!

My village seems to be graveyard for classic European cars at the moment. Today I saw...

Hi all, I have been a regular visitor of this forum since it's early days, and later became a member just before the launch of GT3. In recent years I've been keeping a close eye on this thread, and it's infamous predecessor. I have to say I am HUGELY impressed with the commitment people has put into keeping this thread alive and interesting.

Being a Hong Kong citizen (though currently living and studying in the UK), I am honored and somewhat proud to have someone like RUE to be doing what he does best, presenting to the world the one of a kind of "automobile consumerism" culture there.

Anyways, to show my respect for this thread, I thought I'd begin to share with you guys some of my interesting spots. Unfortunately, as RUE has just about captured every car registered there it is very hard to spot anything else :P

Here goes my first ever post, I hope it's rare enough to be worthy here:

I like how old it is, and yet they put those new mirrors on it

Well when you got break away mirrors, I'd hazard that the mirrors will always be the newest thing. And possibly the most valuable. I didn't know those were rare, I'm so used to seeing the one at the farm I work at. I outta snap a picture!

Well they do look out of place, but at least they are better than original!

"And now as we continue our tour of this classic Landy, you will notice the nice new mirrors. They are either there because somebody got a bit ambitious or ended victim of someone else's ambition.

CROIKEE! Take a go at those wires! It may be a power mirror!

Thanks for the kind words and welcome to the DYSAGT thread Dac_Xint I'm sure we all hope you will become a regular contributer! Always good to meet people with connections to Hong Kong too. Are you by any chance studying automotive design in Coventry? I have a bit of a link with the place myself. You've also answered a question that a few of us were pondering over. I snapped a Land Rover Lightweight with a Chandler Bing lookalike driver in Deep Water Bay over on HK Island, but we didn't know exactly what vehicle it was. The old Landies and the Defenders are quite popular here. Out of interest, where was your photo taken?

Thanks for your reply RUE, I'm happy to have contributed to the question over your Land Rover driven by a Matt Perry look-alike.

The Photo of the Lightweight was taken at a remote village near Tung Chung city on Lantau (To foreigners, thats the island of the HK Int' Airport). My family resides at Tung Chung, and I took the picture during a mountain hike on my recent vacation back home. I guess these vehicles might have possibly served in the former British government, as they are mostly used in Helicopter drops in the British military?

To your other question, yes, I'm an Automotive Design student at "Chaventry" Uni, I've just completed my 3rd year (of a 4 year course) in April 2007, and since then I've been on a placement at a small design firm called Design Q, about a half hour away from Coventry. For those of you who likes cars and transport in general, you should check out their website's portfolio! (Hint: who came up with the Ferrari FXX?).

http://www.designq.co.uk/

I will be returning to uni to complete my final year this September... gonna miss being a student...

Nice! Another design student. I just finished up first year of Industrial Design, and am looking at continuing towards your end of the world for exactly what you're studying.

Nothing but crap lately. Boring stuff...

First red Ferrari of the year, other than that rando 308 in the middle of February.

First picture of the XF. I've seen a couple now, and although they totally missed the mark with this thing, it still has a very respectable road presence.

Cayenne Turbo S. I've seen a few new Cayenne GTS's, but no pictures yet. This'll have to do for now...

I love how this thing totally eclipses that little Audi Avant back there....

That's it for today. I missed a couple other Ferraris and a few Vipers, but mostly pretty meh on the roads since that 430/SLR duet.

You're absolutely correct. They were also designed to fit in certain cargo planes. I've been thinking about moving to Mui Wo on Lantau actually. I'd definately be getting a car then.

Just saw this. Sorry for the bad picture, I was riding my bike at the time. Ferrari 550 Maranello. I simply love this car and the prices are plummeting.

Thanks for clearing that up on the Land Rover Lightweight, Rue.
I forgot to ask, whats your connection with Coventry Uni? A former student?

A lot of foreigners lives here in Lantau, you'll love the environment and apparently the 2nd cleanest air locations in all of Hong Kong. I love it simply for the openness and, well, the openness. I've spent most of my life in the UK, so Hong Kong's city life is a little too claustrophobic for me. Unfortunetly not too many interesting cars... but plenty of flight stewardess lives here

Oh my, did I just subconsciously convince myself to buy a 550 Maranello?! Interesting. Now if only I could subconsciously convince someone else to give me a fat stack of cash!

Oh, and Dac_Xint you say there are no good cars on Lantau? Try the main road coming from the airport or the car park. There are some great cars to be seen going back and forward from Chep Lap Kok!

Why is it that the only times you're not ready with a camera the good stuff rolls by?! :grumpy:

A while back i missed an 80's C4 corvette going past my house, yesterday, same thing, i heard it, but my camera was busy uploading to my pc...

While driving i again saw the 70's C3 corvette thats haunting me, its around here somewhere, it rarely comes out but i have seen it a total of 4 times and still no photo ops.

Also for the 2nd time a nice red ferrari 360 passed me on the road i live on, i was driving and my camera was at home.

So frustrating....:grumpy:

Weird. In the space of walking one block to get a Subway sarnie this afternoon, I stumble across...

I'm thinking it's the companies car. It's parked outside a Lambo dealer. Maybe they were doing something for the pearl white LP640 and grey Superleggera in the showroom. No-one's going to scratch someones car on purpose in Hong Kong anyway, but I guess it does tempt fate.

I think I like the R35 GTR better with the painted lip and skirts. But being that is the first picture I have seen of one with them painted, I cannot be too sure about it.

If I'd noticed when I took the photos I would have taken a few more.

I also saw my first new Impreza STi version today in dark charcoal grey. It looked pretty ace with those flared front wings and aggressive stance!

Eww. Don't people realize the reason car companies put black on the bottom is so the car doesn't look like it weighs 7000 pounds? Some people have the worst design sense, it's awful.

Keef is correct, companies use black body panels to visually minimize the car's size. Take the Ford KA for example, it's based on a Fiesta chassis, and yet it gives the impression of a car not much larger than a Mini Cooper. All due to the black front and rear bumper, or lack of body colour.

Personally I love the white R35, but I would appreciate the original trims more. Even the Mine's R35 has retained some of the black trims, just keeping it more interesting I guess.

Still, a R35 is better than no R35, and thats still a pretty sexy car. Kudos RUE.

And to RUE, My home in HK over looks the highway going toward the Airport, but living on the 55th floor means I should really get a telescope to spot anything:lol: I usually go to the airport for lunch (just over 10 minutes from Tung Chung), next time when I'm back at home I'll be sure to take my camera to the airport car park for a day!

Heres what i saw on my way to school this morning.

A 328 GTB in horrible conditions. These are somewhat rare as i see alot more new ferrari's than old ones

I was given the unpression the black bumpers on the Ka were because it was designed for a city life where bumper scratches are quite common and the matt black would hide such damage better than body coloured bumpers.

And also, I don't think manufacturers used to reserve non-body coloured bumpers for the lower trim models if it was a matter of better styling.

Yah, black plastic bumpers and trim are just cheaper in general, thus you'd see say a base model Caravan with them and an upper-scale Caravan with the painted bumpers.

All correct, I guess having more benefits for using cheaper black bumpers give companies all the more reason to use them, at least for the lower end models. I'm just forwarding what knowledge I was taught, and besides, more often than we realise, a design's true benefits reveals themselves after the production, and became a trend. 💡
