DiRT Rally Thread

It's been pretty much confirmed that the cars coming in Winter Wonderland are more recent that those of the Modern Masters pack, in other words, 1.6 liter, 2010s class, WRCs.

I think there's a good chance that all three remaining 1.6 WRC cars will be making an appearance. If the C4 hadn't been licensed, I would doubt the DS3 myself but the deal did roll with Citroën so...

As I said on the other forum, the game's chief designer, Paul Coleman, said on twitter the game should have around 40 cars by release. We stand at 37 with the Modern Masters included. Those plus 3 more:

Citroën DS3 WRC
Hyundai i20 WRC
VW Polo R WRC

...and we have 40.

Fair enough, that would be a good starting point.
And more cars and tracks as DLC is fine by me.

You can really feel those complex diffs working in the new WRC cars, it feels like traction control but I'm guessing it's sending power to different wheels to help the traction. Can't wait for the snow stages to arrive, if they are anything like the ones in RBR they will be a lot of fun.

Maybe just the i20. I would be surprised if the Alpine from DiRT 3 wasn't included.

So I went from using the Quattro to the 037 for the weekly event, without even giving it a test run beforehand... my word, the difference was staggering. After the first few corners in Finland, I lost all faith that the car wouldn't spin out going through the bends, so I decided to just ease my way through and try and keep it on the straight and narrow.

Monaco was hellish, I think ended up doing at least 3 pirouettes at the top before crawling down the rest of the way, I still ended up with a busted radiator that couldn't be properly fixed, and by the end of last stage in Wales (having gotten over-confident and smashing nose first into a tree at 80mph+) I think the coolant was practically non-existent. I've never been so happy to see the finish line! :)

They still have one more update to deliver (Sweden/Winter Wonderland) before it's out of Early Access, if I'm not mistaken. Then they are supposed to consider whether they should or not to bring it to the consoles. Anything other than a resounding 'yes' is unacceptable.

:P

Yeah I recall them saying that they weren't sure if they would ever bring it to consoles. I've tried playing with a gamepad and it's seriously difficult compared to using a wheel. Plenty of console users with wheels though so hopefully they do.

I use my PS4 controller and it works perfectly fine, that being said I haven't used a wheel so maybe i'm just used to it

Yeah I am really hoping so need a solid rally sim on ps4. WRC5 has not been well accepted so I did not buy it even though I bought and enjoyed WRC3 and WRC4 on ps3. Hoping SLRE can give me my fix when it is released, but wouldn't need it if Dirty Rally was released on console.

This game looks really authentic. Are some of the stages reused or reusing assets from Dirt 3? I think it shows they were on the right track with the rallying portions of that game.

The stages are MUCH narrower than DiRT 3. Seriously.... I went back and had a go at a Finland DiRT 3 stage recently and it was shockingly wide.

The only stuff they reused was art assets (trees) and some parts of Monte Carlo (which was DLC in DiRT 3, but has been heavily altered for inclusion in DiRT Rally)

I find it odd that so many rally games get one of the major facets of the sport wrong so often. Why would you make it wider? It's not meant to be easy and it's not like you'll be going three wide into a corner.

Glad to read this one is narrower as it should be. I await the console version with high interest.

Simply Frustration/enjoyment
A game for it sell well needs to be enjoyable when played on a variety of inputs and by varying skill.

Sims by nature reward players with more skill or better inputs. which means it punishes those who are not good enough or have a bad input method (keyboard) to various levels. while many of us aren't pros, the punishment/challenge is at a level that is still rewarding and fun for most of us. however some sims/games punish players severely and so it's only playable for those that are either good at the game naturally or have a large interest in the game or genre. Eve online is a good example of this.

games sell on their enjoyment level so a game that's accurate does not always mean it fun and vice versa.

Even then, a narrow course doesn't instantly mean difficulty needs to be set high. Track-side obstacles that are removed on lower difficulties and assists would lower the learning curve.

I've learned, in my 2 or so of playing Dirt Rally..

-> Don't Cut when he says so.
-> Overshooting Corners sucks
-> Tire Puncture is the end of the world.

The sound it makes... <3

Bought this the other day. Codies have done a great job 👍. Haven't played a proper rally game for ages as I've been playing circuit racers, so I have found the learning curve a bit steep! :P

This. There's always some logs or a massive ravine. The pacenotes are great in this game, you basically rely on them.

I agree, a bit of leaning curve! Such a good feeling nailing a corner.

I bought this game when it was first available (on my brother's computer, because I don't have a computer powerful enough) and I loved it. I haven't played it since (again, because brother's computer), but I am happy to see these updates they are adding!

I'm waiting patiently for it to become available on the PS4. Hoping it does.

As much as I complain about the game missing several key elements, it is a good game...and is leaps better than it was when it was initially released. You're in for a treat when you get back into it.

For me DiRT Rally is the surprise best sim of 2015. Came out of nowhere (we were expecting DiRT 4 at best) and has really delivered.

Just like Richard Burns Rally before it (which is a perfectly valid comparison in terms of realism), you have to be awake and fully concentrating to get through a stage without wrapping the car into a tree. It's brutal, relentless: Awesome fun when you are in the zone, hugely frustrating when you are not :)

I'm really looking forward to the "soft" snow banks of Sweden, and hopefully those extra 2010 class cars. Also hoping they come through on the original intention to allow rally cars on the hill climb stages.

And then once the game is released at the end of the month I'm hoping sales are sufficient that Codemasters are in a position to throw some good DLC at us after release, because this engine is good enough and more stages/cars are very welcome. As with Assetto Corsa, I'll buy any DLC they feel like making.

Some events do have pretty wide roads. There's a reason why the FIA had to shorten Ouninpohja in Finland - it was so wide and so fast that the cars were averaging over 130km/h, which the FIA felt was too fast.

You must mean 130 mph, as 130 kph is slower than a lot of average rally speeds.

Averaging 130km/h is pretty fast. A lot of rally cars top out at under 160km/h at a lot of rallies. The winner of Formula 1 races generally average around 130mph over the race. A rally car averaging 130mph would probably be impossible unless the stage was a completely straight road.

That's true, I was thinking more along the lines of the Estonian and Finnish rallies, where I'd have expected the averages to be even above 130 kph. I know a lot of the newer cars do top out slower than say the R4 classes.
