what's the replay trick?

First you have to get a good lap to save as a replay. Then go into the Replay Theater and play your lap in fast forward. Hit the select button to go into Photomode and take your pictures. The smoke will be just a little bit thicker but a lot longer than usual, because it doesn't dissipate as fast in fast forward as it does in normal speed. 👍 more smoke = better looking drifts
