Driving Styles?

i just am curious about everyones driving styles, like do you drive AT or MT, cockpit view or chase view, analog or d-pad etc..

personally, ive driven with the analog and MT for so long that i can barely drive with the d-pad AT. that is how i learned to play though. and i drive in cockpit view, no particular reason, it just has a better feeling of speed i think.. plus im usually a bit... unpredictable. im fast when i do time trials and hard races, but on easier races and 2 player i drive extremely agressive, sliding around the track, spending most of the race trying to keep going in a straight line.

just another unimportant thread i made cuz i was bored :)

Videogames are unimportant, period. they're just a way for us to kill time mostly. :)

Anyways, I'm pretty much an analog / chase view 2 guy. I'll use the d-pad for certain license tests like that Kei car going round the skidpad, and I'll switch to the in-cockpit view for variety during races (mostly to see who's behind me) and also for the slalom licenses.

I'm the same way: in difficult races I'll go for grip...just trying with all my might to keep up, but if I manage to get ahead, I'll totally make a spectacle of myself: sliding into corners and stuff.

As far as transmission, I'm mostly MT, but for certain memory cards or for certain cars, I'll use AT. I've got all my memory cards marked off with different ‘drivers’. For instance, I've got a Soccer Mom who drives wagons and practical family cars like the Volkswagen Golf and Honda Accord Wagon. She prefers automatics 100% of the time (as any true soccer mom would). Sometimes, I'll just look at a car and go “it looks like an automatic” like the Mercedes Benz or a Jaguar. I need to get out of the house more :)

I use MT, D-Pad, and Cockpit view and I will rarely be putting less than 100% effort into being as fast as possible ...

yeah now that i think of it, i can remember the d-pad giving me blisters on my thumb :guilty: i was thinking about getting some 'game gloves' like my cousin has specificaly for that reason, but its not so bad now.

and hey parnelli dont worry about having to 'get out'. i hope that i can still play games when im older. you havnt lost touch with your youth dude thats cool. that reminds me.. my grandpa just recently reitred from his job, hes like 65 or something, and he just bought a ps2 and is addicted to 007 james bond games lol :)

I always use MT, D-Pad on PSX or Keyboard on PC, chase view, and unlike JMac i rarely give 100%.
I rarely do races, just drive on time-trial/practice playing with setups and enjoying each car's handling.

Neon: exactly. I remember in GT1 I used the D-pad cuz I didn't know you could switch to analog gas/brake in the options panel. The d-pad used to hurted my thumb, too.

Korndawg: I pretty much plan on playing videogames for as long as I live! As long as they keep making Gran Turismo and Resident Evil...I'm there.

Mac: That's interesting. I only do time trials when I happen to set a new record during a race. Yeah, it means I have to switch from sim to arcade, but thems the breaks.

Jmac: Rawk on. I've tried using D-pad in GT2 just for variety. It helps me with some license tests. I really wanna try a wheel someday, but i keep hearing that none of them work that well...

yeah the game wheels dont work that good, at least the ones ive tried.. the main problem i had was that i could use the gas/brake pedals, but then the steering was in digital mode, so the steering was all or nothing. so i usually went to analog mode for steering so i could drive smoother, but thn the pedals wouldnt work and id have to use the buttons on the wheel to drive :grumpy:

But i do it in sim mode. There's a few events where you can enter with nearly any car, then i just keep running on practice before enter the race. Many times i do something like, 40 laps on practice and then a 2 or 3 laps race...

The ones i use more are: Muscle Car; Tuned NA; Tuned Turbo; Super Touring; All Stars.

That sux about the wheels. I'll stick with my dual-shock.

Mac: I used to do this in GT1: race practice laps around and around...in GT2 I'll do a lap, maybe 2 mostly to see if my gearing is okay. If they had qualifying in GT2, I'd certainly do more practicing b4 a race.

By the way, what other options do you like? Mostly I like the Wide track view..it creates the illusion of more speed. Sometimes I'll use Normal view, it makes the framerate a little smoother. I tried using Narrow view about a month ago and couldn't hack it! It doesn't look like you're speeding anymore, and it kept messing with my cornering (I'd turn into corners too soon, mostly). I also like using Type 2. It took me awhile to figure out the difference between 1 & 2. Type 1 has a tight chase camera angle...the camera tends to follow the car. With Type 2, the view is looser, so that if you spin, you'll actually see the side of your car (sometimes the front) as you spin out.

For FWD cars, I'll use the L2 button as my e-brake, too.

Man have I missed alot while I was absent! :D :embarrassed:
Anyway, I use both analog sticks to drive the car; L3 for cornering, R3 for acceleration and braking. The controller that I'm using is the DS2, the best controller I've used so far, and I say that because for some reason the DS2 "feels" smaller than the PS-One DS controller. I use manual transmission when racing and automatic during testing, because I want to concentrate on the car's behavior rather than proper shifting

I don't do all those laps to prepare for races, it's just for the fun of driving and because i'm lazy to swap to arcade disk :P
For example, drifting with the Evo VI through those 2nd gear corners in Seattle Full Course... delicious... :D

When i enter an event to win a race, to get a car or $, i usually don't do practice laps.

I've used the in-car view since Day 1. In fact, I never liked that viewpoiint for any other racing game, but now I use it for all types of racing simulators.

I use the D-Pad for all controls; that's what my PSX came with all those years ago. I never bothered to buy DualShock controllers. Unfortunately, it's just about impossible to keep any GT2 car pointed in a perfectly straight line using the D-pad, so you're forced to rely on making a near-perfect corner exit every time. Which isn't a bad thing.

As for style; let's just say it's good thing there's no style points awarded for my driving. It's awfully hard to be smooth with a D-pad, but some MR cars allow you to flick the car about in the most amazing ways for the most incredible laps.

GT2 allowed you to brake late, as AI cars seem to brake early for hairpins and other tight turns. This is largely due to the forgiving nature of the GT2's physics engine, providing you've got the car set up just right, and you practice with it for a while. However, oversteer, MR, and some FR car handling was quite tricky...any Elise, TVR Chimaera, JTGC NSXs, and Shelby Cobras (to name a few) would make some GT3 and GT4 vets howl with agony without any driving aids.

Man, the GT2 forum is dead nowadays! I'm gonna be starting GT3 finally within a couple of weeks I hope but I'll keep visiting here.

It's good to hear that GT3 & 4 are more difficult. I'm up for that challenge.

The GT3 forum is quite dead. Nobody seems to really remember it, now that GT4 is out. In fact, the comparisons between GT2 and 4 are made all the time.

Trust me on this one Parnelli Bone...just skip GT3 and jump right to GT4. You're not missing much in GT3, except a variety of F1 cars, and a Rome Circuit which was quietly swept under the rug for GT4. (Sorry to break the bad news.) The variety in GT4 won't have you missing GT2 all that much, whereas GT3 just whetted my appetite for the old game all over again.

Darn it, I'm going to have to find another pseudo-moderator for the GT2 if you ignore this place just as I have for the past 4 months or so!

Psuedo moderator? as in deputy sheriff? Heh heh heh. Don't worry, I'm not going to ignore GT2, in fact, I'm still going to keep playing it. I've got 9 memory cards randomly going at once, all with different cars, and my goal is to drive as many cars in GT2 as possible. A couple of my cards are finally nearing the 98.6% mark (or whatever the total is).

I'm only going straight to GT3 cause I can't afford Gt4 yet. It's still like $49.95 and I don't wanna get a used copy!

Mac, what is GTR?

It's a great GT racing simulator available for PC. Some people on GT4 forums that tried GTR, says that after playing GTR GT4 feels like an arcade game...

You can drive from dusk till dawn on 24h races, it has variable weather conditions, cockpit view, and you can even analyze your laps with motec, the same software used by real racing teams! :D

Screenshots at official site, you can download a demo there if you wanna try it.

VARIABLE WEATHER??? dude, I am sooo there, uh, when I get a computer, if I ever do! What about car damage? What about red flags and other penalties? What about what about what about

Way to aggresive :P

and IMO,GTR SUCKS

GTR isn't easy like GT, has an high realism level, and it takes sometime to master (you won't go anywhere without good setups). So i'm sure there's alot of arcade racers out there that share your opinion...

What GT has better than GTR and any other game/sim is the big amount of different cars you can drive, and this is the main reason why i like GT. It's like an interactive car encyclopedia.

lol.. it does seem to realy be slowing down, i couldnt get on the last week or so cuz of some stuff. mainly cuz im moving soon, so i might be out for a while :grumpy: i hate moving.. il try to find a library or something to post while the comp is packed up :indiff: but for now im still here so yeah..

Korndawg you're moving again? didn't you just move?

Well I went looking for GT3 today. I went to electronic boutique and gamestop, and guess what? Neither store has a copy of it new OR used! then I accidentally saw some kid playing GT4, he was driving a Skyline thru what looked like a city and wasn't doing very well. Wow, but it was impressive to watch the sparks fly off the car and stuff as he hit something.

yeah we just moved here about 2 yrs ago, but were just going to a city thats 45 minutes away, i dont know why exactly, maybe closer to my dads job.. but im not looking forward to it.

and yes, gt4 is awesome! i rented it from blockbuster a few weeks ago and couldnt stop. tons of cars, 500+ i think, plus alot of classics :) and they have the best track in the world (personal opinion) the old nurburgring, i looove that track! narrow winding roads and super long - about 8-10 minutes a lap. pure fun, once i get a job that game is on the top of my list

once I get a PS2 that game is on the top of the list 💡
Well , for driving style in GT2 , I use the D-Pad , I cant function very well with analog , and I have the chase view closest behind the car.

I should just get GT4 for cryin' out loud. I'm all into budgeting right now. Instead, I got Champions of Norrath yesterday, that game kicks ass! I got addicted to it, next thing I know it was 3 in the morning!

Back on topic: I'm amazed at all the non-analog users!

No place for me to put a wheel. You can't use one when it's sitting on your lap.

Just get GT4, and forget GT3 had ever existed.

parnelli: yeah i bought champions of norrath a few months ago, i agree its realy fun, until i lost my data :grumpy:
and yeah i thought everyone used the analog.. but when i think of it, of the 5 or 6 years ive played the game, i only drove with the analog for the last year or so..

pupik: lol it is really a pain to use the steering wheels for that reason, it seems cramped, mine came with a little stand thingy but it is a piece of junk and the legs dont stay out by themselfs
why forget about gt3? it might not have anywhere near the car selection of the other 2 but its not a bad game, ive been playing it alot the past few days. its fun to just cruise around that 'complex string'
