That is one beautiful Celica!
Thank you mate :)
I'm back from Tasmania for a few days so I took the opportunity to go down and get 2 new front tires - Federal 595 RS-R this time, the Dunlop SportMaxx TTs on the rear are still fine. It will be interesting to feel how this mix of tires feels at the track - the Federals are like a Semi-Slick so will have more grip than the Dunlops, at least in the dry, so it might be a little more tail happy.

I'm going to record a video soon, with my new GoPro. I have a suction mount so I want to do a clip with the suction cup on the spoiler and the camera aiming down at the exhaust and do a few acceleration runs to hear it under load. I'll post it when it's done.

Just bought a new car - don't worry, still have the Celica, we are trading in our Ford Focus, which is just too small with our 3 kids.

This is the car, an ix35 Trophy, so it has all the extras, leather seats etc, in Blueberry.

Well, I'm listing the GT-Four for sale. I just don't get the time for it lately and I don't have the space to work on it properly, and there are a lot of things I would need to do to it for track use.

I'm aiming on selling and then getting something more track focused later on (not too far away). I just don't see the GT-Four as a serious track weapon, as it's too heavy and I'd like to have something light and preferably RWD..

I don't, can't stand rotaries. Jet power I will accept.:lol: FD RX-7s at least look nice, but I can't forgive that horrible engine sound.
Does not compute lol. I think they sound amazing. I'm interested in NC MX-5s too, must be track ready though - learnt my lesson, it costs too much to build one yourself, it's much more affordable buying one that's already done. I've been going through the race car classifieds and there are bargains everywhere on cars that are ready to take to Time Attack as they are, with trailer and spares. I don't need a streetable car as I have a work vehicle and we have a family car so a dedicated race car is fine. It's a little ways off, I'd like to get our wedding out of the way first and maybe get in to a bigger house but it's a dream that ain't going to go away and I have the full support from my fiancé to go racing.

If you want to go racing, the saloon car series is a cheap motorsport avenue, the cars themselves can be had for $10k or less. If time attack is where it's at for you, I have no decent suggestions you can afford. Although I might attempt to deter you from NC MX-5s, everyone always says the NA and NB models are faster because NC's are a lot heavier. That said I can't say I've seen many fast MX-5s that haven't had serious work done, your Celica would probably trounce most of them.

Edit: Where are the race car classifieds?

It's more about the simplicity of a lightweight chassis and reliable engine, not so much raw power, but I can see it getting out of hand easily. I've even considered a Civic race car, although I would love a RWD. I originally thought I'd get a series 4 RX-7 but then you pay quite a bit for them, you can get skylines quite cheap but that's going away from the simple and light category.

The Celica might not even sell for the price I want and then I'll be kind of stuck with it. Part of me wants to do it up as a time attack car but I know without serious work the chassis just isn't going to deliver the same amount of feedback and performance as the usual contenders that get converted to race cars.

I'm sorry to hear this. Electric cars just aren't the same for track use...

You obviously did not see the Peoples Choice winner at the WCSS. He converted a 2008? WRX to a fully custom electric car. Beautiful in every way. So much torque.

But at the same time the feel and sound of a gas or diesel engine... can't replace that.

They can be great, I suppose... But the feeling and sound is what gets me. I like the way my car sounds too much to give that up...

Edit: and even if the "pistons" or "rotors" are rotating, they're still there... They serve the same function; compress air/fuel mixture for combustion, and then convert that heat energy into more rotation...

Sad to read you are wanting to sell. You have built one of the cleanest ST185s I've seen anywhere. I'd love the engine for my SW20.

Good that you are after an RX7, they are a good base to start with plus they look really unique even though they are used as a track car a lot. I can probably count on both hands the amount of real RX7s I've seen in NZ on the road. They really stand out. Good luck with the sale and search for the new car.

I never said anything about going away from internal combustion, I merely said I was thinking of going to something without pistons to which I would assume most car nut's brains would instantly think of rotaries.

Thanks mate I appreciate the comments. Yeah, I'm actually sad thinking of letting it go and I'll really miss it, but there comes a time where you realise that you are letting sentimentality get in the way of making a rational decision.

First off, it spends most of it's time just sitting there. I work away, and don't get time to drive or work on it. I don't have a proper shed to store it properly and I just feel like it's wasted and only going to deteriorate.

I LOVE the way the Celica looks and I have poured a lot of money in to it (even recently with the new bumper!), done things the right way, used expensive parts that have to be sold with the car and I feel like it's a big waste, especially as I haven't had a lot of use out of it since doing it - but the car is getting on. It needs work.

The engine needs a new head - my mood actually came about yesterday at the discovery that the car is now going through coolant, likely due to the problem with the head. The driveline is old. The panel and paint is only good from a distance, the brakes are too small and overheat, the car is heavy, it doesn't have the power I want, parts are non existent and require custom solutions, and that's just the normal stuff, not including any bits to go racing.

To be fair to it, with the Teins, Whiteline sway bar and the bushings done it does feel great, and I'm not saying I'm a pro driver who's going to extract all the speed out of a better chassis or anything but I just feel like I'm missing out on what other people are talking about. I don't even care about winning.

I look at the likes of the RX-7. First off, there's the noise, it sounds bloody brilliant. And I love the idea of RWD - the Celica has an old school 4WD system, with a Viscous centre diff, open front diff and Torsen LSD in the rear. I want to become good at driving a properly sorted RWD with LSD. I want to feel the mechanical link that comes from having the gear lever operate the gearbox and not cable linkages. I want to feel how nimble a lighter chassis is with better weight distribution. I want more power, too!

I also like the idea of having a wealth of off the shelf parts like big brake kits available without having to change several other things to make them work.

Like I say though, I'm not in a rush to sell, if it doesn't get interest I'll hold on to it. If I keep up maintaining it, even in it's current state it should be reliable enough to go on cruises and such, maybe even take it to the track.

It's just that I've gone away from thinking of this as a long term car - I have a very strong dream to do time attack (even if it's not in the immediate future) and I can't see the Celica being able to cut it, even if I wish it would. I'd be too scared of something going wrong with it.

Does this make sense to anyone else? Why do we get so attached to our cars?

I'm exactly the same with my car. I'm very attached to it and I've done a lot to get it cosmetically looking nicer but I've also done a few things to the body that I would have to repeat if I got another MR2. Unfortunately all that is good about it is the body and chassis, everything that makes it a car needs replaced or upgraded.

Sometimes I think that spending all this money on an average car would have been better off buying a better base car. Although the cars I was originally looking to buy was a RWD Toyota Starlet, Carina or Corolla, they aren't exactly much better than what I have now.

The attachment thing is hard to get past but as this is my first car and it handles far better than anything I have driven so it's very hard to let go. It's more of a toy than anything as I have use of an EP81 Toyota Starlet for daily duties.

I know exactly where you're coming from on the sentimental attachment, I still miss my VR Ute, it had real character. I also hear the notion of buying a better base car, I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't have bought a brand new VF SV6 and gone for some cheap 2nd hand 4cyl run-about instead, bought a house then eventually down the line gotten a true weekend warrior like a Torana or something. My VF Ute will never amount to anything without spending serious cash, the driveline is too fragile, the gearbox is only designed to just handle the power of the V6 and nothing more.
Your Celica is a nice car, but if you have different end goals in mind parting with it will be something you have to do. Me? Well, I have this Ute now, may as well keep it as a decent daily driver I guess. Life, how I disdain thee!

Sexy ST185. First thing that comes so my head when I see one is Juha Kankkunen and Carlos Sainz flying through the stages with a Castrol Celica.

So it's been a while since my post about listing it for sale and I haven't done it. I see it sitting there and I just can't bring myself to do it - I know I wouldn't be able to replace it any time soon financially and so I hate the thought of selling it and not having something else to enjoy. So I'm keeping it for now. I know I could use the money from it's sale to put in to a house or our new car to pay it off sooner but realistically I wouldn't get what I want for it and so I don't see the point. Money isn't everything and so if it costs me a few hundred a year in registration and insurance costs to keep it then so be it..

Great! My wheels are allegedly coming soon, once I have them we should organise a cruise or go to some sort of meet together.:dopey:

Yeah, the project I've been supervising down in Tasmania is wrapping up so I actually come back to Brisbane full time on Friday :D So plenty of chances for a cruise. Except for October. Crazy month. Bathurst, plus driving down to Sydney the following weekend for World Time Attack and I'm also looking after the kids for a weekend before that while Maddi goes away for a weekend so yeah. Full on.

Sounds like the September I'm still in the middle of having.

Soon I'll be taking the Celica off the road again, hopefully, and getting it properly sorted once and for all. We have put a holding deposit on a house and signed a contract conditional to finance so if we get it I'll have a nice garage and work space in which to work on it.

I'll be taking the head off the engine and binning it then sourcing perhaps a Gen 3 one, will look at doing a few other things at the same time. Not necessarily upgrades, but definitely in the realm of reliability for track days etc.

I'll be focussing on the cooling and oiling.

Will also fit the parts I've had sitting in the garage before it gets retuned for the new head:
  • Oil Temp Sensor
  • Coolant Temp Sensor
  • Fuel Pressure Sensor
  • Oil Pressure Sensor
  • Solid Diff Mount
  • Rear Subframe and Diff Cradle Bushes

Good to see it's still with you and you plan to make it better. Looks like we are both looking for GEN 3 engines. I hope to import a half cut from a 94+ SW20 from Japan. That way I have everything I need to do the swap. Make it as painless as I can. Will you be looking for an ST205 engine?

Just the head at this stage, my bottom end is already well built with forged Pistons
