Mitsubishi today unveiled the Eclipse Spyder, a convertible version of its popular fourth-generation Eclipse coupe described as an “attainable exotic.” Eclipse Spyder is the third generation open-top model and will sell for $26,000. Eclipse Spyder is offered in two trim levels: the GT and the GS powered by 3.8-liter V6 and 2.4-liter 4-cylinder MIVEC engines respectively.

Design highlights

* Eclipse Spyder uses sleek, taut and muscular lines to create a shape that is cool and aggressive whether the cloth top is up or down.
* Large-sized headlamps crafted to flow into the bodylines, and chrome-look LED tail lamps distinguish the exterior and generate a sporty appearance with a strong sophisticated flavor.
* Using aninstrument panel that houses distinctive motorcycle-inspired gauges and ice-blue night illumination for better legibility, the interior styling projects the cool image and creates the feel-good space that convertible owners look for.

Engine, transmission, and brakes

* The Eclipse Spyder GT mates a 3.8-liter V6 MIVEC engine to either a six-speed manual transmission or a sport-mode equipped five-speed automatic. Pumping out a maximum of 195 kW (260 ps) and 35.7 kg-m (350 N-m) of torque, the Spyder GT accelerates from zero to 60 mph (zero to 96 km/h) in about seven seconds.
* The Eclipse Spyder GS mates a 2.4-liter in-line 4-cylinder MIVEC engine to either a five-speed manual transmission or a sport-mode equipped four-speed automatic. Producing a maximum power of 119kW (162ps), the Spyder GS returns excellent fuel efficiency, rated to achieve 30 mpg (12.7 km/liter) in highway driving by EPA testing standards.
* The GT employs 4-wheel disc brakes, while the GS uses a drum-in-disc system for the rear brakes.

Trim & equipment

* In a premium-level design that enhances its appearance and convenience, the third-generation Eclipse Spyder features an automatic soft top which smoothly folds completely out of sight under a flush-fitting hydraulicpowered tonneau panelin about 19 seconds.
* Both GT and GS trim levels come standard with 17-inch alloy road wheels, air conditioning, an advanced dual-stage driver and passenger seat SRS air bag system, head protecting seat-mounted side air bags, an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), cruise control, engine immobilizer and keyless entry.
* Featured in Eclipse launched last year and in Outlander sold in Japan, a highly acclaimed audio system was co-developed with Rockford Fosgate a leading American car audio system manufacturer. This premium audio system features a 650 Watt power amp with a six-disc, in-dash CD changer that can also play MP3 files.
* For the Eclipse Spyder, this system features a subwoofer center-mounted underthe rear seat. It provides unique automatic sound adjustment and equalization for the different sound conditions under top-up or top-down driving.
* Leather seating surfaces, heated front seats and heated exterior mirrors together with outside temperature and compass displays standard on the GT are available as options on the GS.
* GT is available with a premium package that features 18-inch alloy wheels with 235/45 R18 tires, a six-way power driver’s seat, aluminum pedals and an automatic climate control system.

Blazin's Note: Even though she took her top off, this girl still has a fat ass.

I don't like that, the whole shape of the car doesn't suit an open top at all. Yes, she still has a fat arse.

 Ive hated the looks of the new looks of the eclipse since it was released. It really does have a fat ass!

This baby got back! ;) I'm not a big fan of this Eclipse, but I do think they look good. This convertible looks very natural with the top off IMO. 👍

live4speed
Why so we could laught at it.

No because all the good drop tops ie the bmws mercs and audis cost a arm and a leg and all the other cheap drop tops are womans cars.

I want a convert that I can afford.

Why do you want a convertible in the UK, the weather is ****e.

It'd be like owning a convertable in Michigan, in the summer you get like 2 months of sunny weather.

I actually think it looks better as a cab, mostly because the nasty "backwards fastback" look is gone without the overstyled hatch. You know what I mean. It should look like (read: ripped off) this:

But instead, they made it look like this:

I mean, really, if they are going to rip off the TT that much, they might as well not screw up the side and window profile. Making it a cab gets rid of that gross oversight.

I knew they were going to make this into a convertible when the car came out. It would be to hard to pass up the idea.

Yeah, you just had to know it was coming.

The first Eclipse in years with even a dash of testosterone, and they had to go and make a convertible of it... again.

I'm not calling it a "chick" car... but it is one damn fat "poseur".

This is just a bad idea all together. The extra window piece looks horrible on the car, espically when desidns like that havent been used on automobiles from the '60s... But atleast back then they were the norm and served some purpose...

The car is ugly, slow, and pricy... If youre looking for an affordable FWD convertable, look no further than the Pontiac G6 convert due this spring/summer, or the Volkswagen Eos due this summer as well...

Pros: An Eclipse convertable for Mitsu fans, upgraded stero, I'm stretching a bit here...
Cons: Overweight, probable structure problems, going into a crowded segment.
Verdict: In a world of cars like the VW Eos, G6 Convertable, Solstice, MX5, Sky, PT Cruiser Convert, VW Beetle Convert, etc... It allready looks outclassed and outgunned.

The latest Eclipse is probably the most exciting Mitsubishi in ages other than the Lancer series. Many thought the Eclipse is one of the ugliest creations in Japan's automotive history. I tend to differ. There's some swoopy and aggressive looks to it without too much overkill. But if you ask me... it seems a bit out of place to me. I still tend to prefer the hardtop in terms of looks. It's nothing surprising like a Mini Cooper convertible.

To me, I'd prefer the hardtop if I had money. I'd save an affordable sports car or sporty car for the Mazda MX-5 or MAYBE the Pontiac Solstice. While the recent Eclipse has nice styling, the convertible deal seems a bit too out of place for me. The rest of the car is fine. To me, I'd be interested to see maybe the machine in 4WD in the future. And while it does have a big ass, it can still kick ass while the haters can kiss it's ass. Can you dig my vibe?

All those other converts you mentioned are either a womans car a gays mans car or just ugly.

Solstice, MX-5, Sky=Not Ugly, Not Womens Cars, Not Gay Mans Cars.

Good Game, pov.

The Eclipse is ok until you get back to the doors, and that big fat ass pops up, it's like seeing Jessica Alba's torso lean in through a door, followed by queen latifah's back end...well, the front of the eclipse isn't as hot as Alba, but the back is definitely Latifah all the way.

The Eos is undoubtedly my favorite upcomming convertable for 2006... The only car that compares is the new Volvo C70...

However, the MX5, Solstice, and Sky are far from a woman's or a gay man's car...

The mx5 is definetly gay. Or should I say metrosexual at the least. Little pretty boy fresh heads would drive an mx5. Its not a true mans car.
And the other two we dont get in the UK.

Oh and they cant carry more than 2 people. I need a drop top that can seat 4 minium.

The MX-5 is not gay, it's not a meaty car, but it's not gay. I don't see a bloke driving an MX-5 and think he's a haridresser, I think he's a guy that likes a good handling car.

So the Lotus Elan is gay, pov?

The Elise...gay?

Lithe, Nimble, stripped down sports cars are gay everyone.

Thank you pov, for this incredible revelation.

I myself was looking into a 91 Miata, but now, upon discovering that I will have to begin servicing men, I think I'll get something more manly...or something like that.

Oh crap, what will my girlfriend think! "Sorry honey, we can't get that Miata...yes, I know we would love it, but apparently I'd have to break up with you and start dating a guy named Thad, because some twit online decided Miata owners are gay."

LOL thats not what I mean. I dont think that miata drivers are gay but to me the mx 5 doesnt appeal to old fashioned manly men like me. I wouldnt look right stepping out of one. Just try and imagine vin diesel stepping out of an mx-5. It wouldnt look right.

Id drive a elise though as its got sharp lines. But once I was over 25 the elise would have to go.

Manly men, wth, your getting deepr and deeper into a hole mate. The Maitia probably appeals more to middle aged people that young whipper-snappers like me. Out of curiosityr, how old are you?
