Of note: When I was just filling in the tables from last night's matches I noticed that teams who got identical results are being ranked by some criterion I wasn't aware of and that I couldn't work out because it was so inconsistent - I thought it was FIFA ranking, then FIFA ranking of the team they played against and then I just abandoned working it out altogether. I was just ranking them alphabetically, but the official rankings were sometimes different.
I looked it up this morning. These are the ranking criteria:
1. Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question
2. Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question
3. Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question
4. Higher number of goals scored away from home in the matches played between the teams in question
5. If, after having applied criteria 1 to 4, teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 4 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6 to 10 apply
That helps settle some of the draws - away goals rule. But what of groups where only one match has been played and identical results netted in identical situations between two teams who haven't played each other?
6. Superior goal difference in all group matches
7. Higher number of goals scored in all group matches
8. Higher number of away goals scored in all group matches
9. Fair play conduct in all group matches (1 point for a single yellow card, 3 points for a red card as a consequence of two yellow cards, 3 points for a direct red card, 4 points for a yellow card followed by a direct red card);
10. Position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system;
Yep, teams are ranked by their disciplinary record. So England and Lithuania both won 2-0 away from home in the groups last night, with Lithuania ranked 1st due to 1 yellow card (1pt) and England 2nd due to 2 yellow cards (2pt)...
