Was giving 1000! miles in EU another try for 200 pts.
Found a nice even lineup for Azur.
Isuzu Coupe (858)
Alfa Duetto (844)
VW Karmann (681)
Honda S800 (758)
Alfa GSS (851)
Me in Nissan BLRA + 9000 mls, old oil (85 hp + 40 ballast) for 200, start on N1.
I decided to give this a go, but with only 200 miles on my BLRA-3 there was a maximum of 191 A-spec on offer. So for a practise session I upped the power a bit, and removed the ballast resulting in 165 A-spec for all races.
Starting on N1's a bit of blocking was needed at the start, but after the first round of stops where I switched to N3's I was able to pull away quite easily. Lap times improved by 25s @ the 'Ring, 5s @ Paris & Azur, and 9s @ Sarthe. With no real Rabbit or Snail in this lineup, and the way I pulled away on the stickier rubber there should be no trouble going the whole 1000miles against this lineup for 200 points when I've worn my car out.
With 7600 miles on the BLRA-3 I decided to have another go, and with N1/N3's and 42 ballast a full 200 points were on offer this time. Using my notes from last time I was even able to come up with strategies to make the best use of the tyres (or so I thought). Paris and Azur were easy enough, both being won with a lap in hand, but the longer tracks were nail biters.
Nurburgring started well, I qualified in first and a bit of blocking saw me retain the lead until I pitted for N3's after just 5 laps. I quickly got back to second place when I rejoined, but one car, I think it was the Honda kept ahead and built up over a minute of lead by the time I exited my second stop. Things didn't look good. Here I was on a 4 stop strategy, and a minute behind a car that had yet to stop!
Luckily it soon transpired that the lack of stopping was not by design, as the lead car began losing vast amounts of time. It would get stuck at the pit entrance for some 30 seconds each lap, and kept falling off the road in other areas. Eventually he did make it into the pits, but not before he had fallen from first to last place and I had lapped him. The rest of the pack finished just a minute or two behind me.
Sarthe also started well. Again I led the pack from the start, and some blocking bashing and drafting saw me cross the start/finish line first on 14 of the first 16 laps. A good run through the esses meant I had a 2 second lead when the Alfa GSS and Isuzu pitted at the end of lap 17. With the race now being at half distance I could have pitted at the end of then next lap for another set of N1's, but as my tyres were barely green I chose to go on.
My notes suggested that my N1's would last around 30 laps - not quite enough to finish the race, and a set of N3's would last just 12 laps, but gain me about 9 seconds per lap. I therefore chose to go on to the end of lap 23 before changing to N3's all round. By this time the Alfa and Isuzu were just 10 second behind, but I was sure I could reel them in.
I exited the pits some 25 seconds behind, lost some time on the straight, and gained some in the twisties, but seven laps later and I had gained no real ground! I could only hope that the two cars in front would have to pit again, and luckily they did just that at the start of the last lap. A slow stop, and a lap on cold tyres allowed me to take the win by about 20 seconds.
It was only now that I realised the error in my notes. They had been taken when I ran the car with fresh oil, racing exhaust and chip, and with no ballast weight. Little wonder I couldn't match the laptimes from before, and the reduced power meant less loss of traction, and thus better tyre life. The N3's that I thought would last just 12 laps had barely gone yellow by the end of the race, so the N1's may have managed the whole race, and I could probably have done the 'ring as a 3 stopper instead of a 4 stopper. doh!
So thats a couple more 200 pointers done. Maybe I'll be taking another screenshot before the end of the year...
