This is the discussion thread for an article on GTPlanet:

F1 24 Hands-On: An Update in Game’s Clothing

With F1 24 nearly upon us — and a little earlier than usual — GTPlanet has been getting familiar with the title through a review code (for Playstation 5) provided by EA. However, we’re not going to do a traditional review of the title for two reasons.

This is why I don't buy sports games too much anymore. If there is any genre that is a perfect for GAAS it's sports titles. It would allow developers to actually work out any bugs that exist and they would have a guaranteed income stream.

Where the issue lies with F1 24 is that I’m not actually sure that this game should exist at all

Sounds like EA has fully Madden-ized/FIFA-ized F1 now that they've had the title for a few years. To be moderately fair to EA, it's pretty much how every developer of "yearly" sports titles operates.
To be frank, that's pretty much been the F1 Series even before EA. I know people see the EA Sports badge and easily resort to the classic blame game but as yet another yearly franchise, this was already in motion. Its just got more attention now that the same publisher of the FIFA and Madden games has it in their possession. I've played enough of these games to remember how at times, the changes were at best incremental and the same bugs from the previous games popped up again.

It's a story as old as yearly franchises. Had Papyrus kept the NASCAR license (and stayed in business), I'm positive NASCAR Racing 2004/2005/2006 wouldn't have been much different than 2003, and 2003 would, instead of being something groundbreaking enough to have much of its code used in the initial releases of iRacing, been a lot like 2002/2001/2000.

There is talk about a handling update coming as well as updates graphically. So the people who have preordered and spent the most will get possibly the worst version of the game. As someone whi has owned every game apart from 13 and 14 I think I may miss this one off at least until it’s a lot cheaper.

I buy these titles every 4 years or so, that way it actually feels like a decent change instead of these small incremental differences.

With the stagnation of the drivers on the grid this season, it's even easier to stick with F1 23's still up-to-date roster.

Edit: It's not lost on me that this was put in the F1 22 forum

Given that I skipped over 23 and didn't really spend that much time with 22, this year's game feels like a fresher experience to me. I don't necessarily think that having less side content is that much of a bad thing either, because they felt hastily tacked on and lost their novelty fairly quickly. What's in 24 feels like a more focused experience, to me at least.

Also agreeing that the handling is immensely better this time around. It's nice to have a car that doesn't feel like its tires have been coated in bacon grease.

It's very interesting that the handling has been pretty much universally panned, so much so that CM will be releasing an update to it but the good folk here are mostly liking it alot. What gives?

like anything (for example destiny 2), streamers tend to nitpick small issues and complain when things are "too easy", and since they have big followings the hate rage picks up traction

There's also a lot of wannabe sim racers who think a race car has to be near undrivable for it to be "realistic", because it gives them a reason to flex about their secondhand Fanatec rig that they probably overpaid for.

As soon as I knew the track and driver roster of Formula 1 in 2024 was the same as before, I knew F1 2024 wouldn’t be worth it unless EA added something drastically new to the game. And yes China returned to the calendar, but it was already in the last couple of F1 games anyway.

F1 2024 is a hard pass for me, honestly I wouldn’t even want it for free.

I think the last version I bought was around 2018 and I enjoyed it. I downloaded F1 23 for free a few months ago and didn’t feel it really took advantage of the PS5s controller which I’m used to from GT7. I don’t have space and budget for a wheel but going back to controller sticks feels like too much of a regression for me. It’s a shame they don’t seem to have taken the approach Polyphony Digital did with the PS5 controller. I’d have bought back in to the series if they did.

I’m seeing so many different opinions on the handling. Everyone who plays on controller (with assists most likely) seems to think it’s good, while wheel users think it’s garbage.

It can’t be much different from the previous game.

I played it on both with and without assists. It's okay on wheel - nicer than F1 22, though I'd say the general feel is a bit pointy - and much better on pad than F1 22/23. There are some mad exploits which allow for some almost NFS-level driving at least on the preview build.

Yeah this does not look like it's so much better than 23, maybe those wanna be sim racers were onto something.

The thing is that it only happens when you full lock a steering wheel, something no one would ever do naturally, which makes it exploit something about the way the physics currently works. They’ve said it will be patched out soon.

On controller you’ll never see that happen because the game doesn’t let you use full lock in medium to high speed corners

Wow, what a weird, angry take.

Why in the world wouldn't you want a racing simulation, featuring real cars, to be as realistic as possible? I do find it very entertaining, sitting in my wanna-be-sim-rig, knowing I'm getting better because I am getting a better understanding of the mechanics of racing, and not because the curbs have been turned off and the car has infinite steering. Why not play mariokart or something on your phone if you just want to steer effortlessly or whatever it is you're looking for?

Do you have any idea how fun driving a gt3 car is, with a powerful DD wheel, loadcell pedals, and a powerful PC with a good VR headset? Do you think I bought that stuff because I want to look cool to my dogs, or do you think I bought it because it's so absurdly ****in' fun? It's not even immersive, at this point in our tech levels, you can completely simulate racing a car. It's crazy that we can do this now. Everytime I sit down to play, I still can't believe this experience is something I get daily, at any track I want, for peanuts compared to buying a 600k porsche and flying to the nordschliefe or whatever.

For the record, I only play iracing, I just like to check in on the yearly f1 release. It's pretty shocking what low effort shenanigans they get away with. Charging 80 bucks a year for a roster update, lacking completely in features and mechanics compared to any credible sim, and now this year, they completely dumbed down everything to the point where it's a phone game.

I'm not even going to mention the furry avatar though.

And you were doing so well not mentioning it up to that point. But anyway, what does it matter? Play the ball not the person.

You're missing his point though, people perceive difficulty to be an equal to simulation. Hard = real isn't the way. So when people complain that something isn't difficult they perceive that as unrealistic.
