This is the discussion thread for an article on GTPlanet:

Fanatec’s GT World Challenge Sponsorship is Over

After being a title sponsor since 2021, racing simulator equipment manufacturer Fanatec appears to have ended its association with the SRO Motorsports group and its signature GT World Challenge series...
Gotta admit, didn't even know they sponsored them in the first place😅

So many GT3 series globally I honestly lost track and get some of them mixed up with others...🤷🏻‍♂️

It really doesn't help that many of those same series are constantly changing their name due to the ever-changing title sponsor ect.

I still remember the days when it was called the Blancpain Endurance Series.
I still refer to it as Blancpain!

Yeah. I am huge fan of the GT3 class as a whole - and I do think it is brilliant that there are so many cars and so many Championships out there - but I know what you mean. There are so many regional series, that it can be difficult to keep up.

This series was always known by many as Blancpain, not even realising the sponsor connection to it. Since it lost that title sponsor, nobody really knows what to call it otherwise or that it's the Premier GT series out there. "GT World" just doesn't come off the same way.

Although I knew Fanatec became the sponsor, I never referred to the series as Fanatec. It went from "Blancpain" to "GTWC" for me.

"Blancpain" to "World GT" for me.

On the occasions when I discuss the series with my friends or other race fans there is normally a puzzled face when I say "World GT" until I say "it used to be sponsored by Blancpain..." and then they immediately know what I am talking about!

The association between the series and that original sponsor was very strong and - as Jimlaad43 says - the subsequent naming/sponsors haven't really caught on the same way.

Fanatec “GT World Challenge” always felt like a rip off of SpeedVision “World Challenge GT” to me. Although the SpeedVision GT part of the series were purpose built run-whatcha-brung type cars before GT3 homologation, when the European World Challenge was announced, it brought back memories of the USA GT series.
