Gimp - Tutorial 1: Basic Editing
OK, Gimp is a free downloadable software which you'll find everywere around the internet, the latest version is the 2.2 version. I'll take those who use Gimp but aren't familiar with it, through some steps to edit their pictures from GT4. Before you begin reading, I want you to know that
I'm using Gimp in Dutch. It shouldn't be that much of a problem though...
In this tutorial, we'll be editting this picture:
![](/forum/proxy.php?image=http%3A%2F%2Fimg108.imageshack.us%2Fimg108%2F4430%2Fimg00304ctim8.th.jpg&hash=c8fb7e5d7f6980cbbedcd75387a37937)
Step 1:
First, open up Gimp, then select "File", "Open", and select the file you wish to edit. The picture will now be opened up, probably in 66% size.
Step 2:
First of all, you need to change the Brightness & Contrast, if you think the picture already looks quite good, then this isn't necessary.Go to Tools->Colors->Brightness & Contrast. Just play with the 2 options untill you think it's good enough.
Step 3:
After we did this, it's time to change the Saturation on the picture, if you don't understand the term, don't worry, you'll notice soon enough 👍. Go to Tools->Colors->Hue & Saturation and move the third bar all the way to the right. You'll notice some color edges on the car, but in the next tutorials, you'll learn how to get rid of 'em.
Step 4:
Now we'll sharpen the picture to remove blurry edges, go to Filters->Strengthen->Sharpen. A new window should appear were you can see your image in. If you want to see it more clearly, you can make the window bigger by dragging out the corners. Now you'll see an option. It already says "10" because it notices you have already set the sharpening up to maximum in GT4. Higher this option to between 10-30. Do not go higher as noise on your picture will appear, just set it to 100-< and see what happens, that's what I'm talking about...
Step 5:
This step isn't that important, in this step we'll resize the image. Normally, your image should be 1280X960 pixels which is quite large to fully post in your gallery. Go to Image->Scale image. A new window appears, I always post them in 600X450 pixels but the choice is up to yourself. NOTE: If you resize it smaller then 600 pixels, do the sharpening step after resizing 👍
Tada! The different is not huge but you do notice some changes to the image. Hope you understood everything I said
I'll be posting more tutorials were we'll learn how to get rid of the watermark with the Clone tool and how to add effects, glows and other stuff...
I hope this tutorial is somewhat helpfull 👍
