the thing I don't get is how do you tell when people are using ballast or power limiter to meet the requirements?

Why would that be a problem? After you're on track, there's no way you could take ballast off or de-limit so it's ok.

Pretty sure that's not what he means. He's talking about overmodding your car then limiting it so you have a crazy torque curve, or lightening your car too much then putting ballast on to get the PP perfect.

Well yes and no, a new car that is modded above a PP limit and detuned to meet the requirement will break-in over the course of the race and actually have more HP and PP by the end.

Well in that scenario it would be pretty obvious to pick those two things apart.

For example, let's think of how someone would possibly increase their HP in order to detune with the power limiter.

Engine upgrades not only raise torque, but RPMs as well so catching that would be as easy as looking at the replay through the car in question's perspective. RPMs would be higher.

Turbo? Boost gauge comes on

ECU? Raises top speed, easy to catch when watching the car go down the straight by itself.

But ballast is a little more difficult to police but instead of PP we could simply go to HP and weight restrictions to make it even simpler.

It's really not that hard.

Well to fully break in you need to go 180 miles. That's 100% of the extra break-in horsepower from 0 to 180 miles. Our car started at 134 and went up 4 more horsepower to 138. That's 45 miles needed for every 1 HP.

Our pre-season race @ GVE was 46.5 miles. and our longest race will be 100.8 miles @ Laguna Seca. You can only possibly gain 2 hp max so even if you were cheating it wouldn't be a problem. The rate of power increase is only possibly being exponentiated by the addition of engine upgrades which, again, are pretty easy to catch and regulate.
The "cup car" in question would only increase about 2 hp per every 45 miles.

I was trying to see how much of an advantaged it would be to throw on a turbo or super charger, and off the starts it kills with all the torque you gain, but you lose too much hp. Overall, I think my laptimes were actually slower. I only tested it on tsukuba, and with all the tight turns there, you'd think torque would help you out, but ends up being slower from what I found =\

You guys are right it doesn't matter as I had thought. I was thinking you could add an ECU, intake manifold, and header and then use the power limiter to go back to 138hp (but now have a much fatter powerband) -- but doing so exceeds 389pp so performance points does seem to factor in area under the curve...

So the only thing that could really be snuck in is adjustable suspension which I don't believe actually helps lap times -- just feel.

It does help lap times but with adjustable suspension you could spot it because the car would be significantly lower then the rest of the cars. Also there would be less body roll so that would also give it away.

With suspention I was able to drop half a second at Tsukuba, it does more then you would think, right?

It lowers the center of gravity of the car allowing it to corner faster. Faster corning = faster times.

Yes, but we can tell if you're using it so I wouldn't. ;)

I would never do such a thing D; I do like to exploit things to their limit with the what if factor however ^^ which is why I got a "Cheater car" in the garage haha. It's got all the beneficial mods thrown on it. I think it's about a good second faster on all the tracks we've done.

Just the fact you have that car worries me....

Hehehe xD the rape-mobile. You can easily tell when I bring it out, not that I have had the chance to yet. It's my first miata that I bought everything for, way before I joined the serries. No way at all does it resemble my current car, so I'm not trying to sneak it in or anything. It's white with a carbon hood, so be on the look out for it in one of these practice rooms coming up >=]
