Bit sad how this thread has turned out...

This should be a celebration of what we can do as mankind if we work together. I just watched the Space X launch and it was truly inspiring. There's not much that surprises me technology wise but this to my great amusement totally slipped under my radar. The two boosters coming down in unison was just jaw dropping!

The car in space was a gimmick of course but it was a neat touch that will be remembered for a long time.

We've been launching crap into space since 1942 though so I'm not really sure how this is all that inspiring.

I'd be more impressed if I didn't think it was all just a way for Musk to distract people from the fact that he can't produce a car in a timely manner or treat his employees like humans. And that's the problem with Musk in a nutshell, I really want to like him because I think he's a visionary and not afraid to push on what people believe. But on the flip side, he seems like a horrible person who hasn't the slightest idea how to actually run a company anymore.

Yup, very much this.

I mean, they could have chosen to launch something of some kind of cultural significance into space, if they didn't want to use a concrete block. Using a Tesla is basically Musk performing Muskurbation on himself, infront of the world.

Maybe he was too busy selling recreational weapons of pain and expensive medical bills - for a massive mark-up - to come up with a better idea.. (or y'know, too busy to deliver on a promise he's actually taken a deposit for either)

It's called cross-promotion. Why would Elon Musk want SpaceX to launch a block of concrete when it can launch an advertisement for his other company and give us great photos of a convertible flying through space? Seriously... a red sports car... with a spaceman with his arm on the window sill... how does that not do it for you?

Because I'm not a moron?

edit: Just to be clear, I'm not hating for the sake of it... there's a 95% chance something I made is visible in some of the shots of that roadster in space, as a tertiary supplier to Tesla for the manufacturing of the Roadster.... and I still don't find it cool.

The way I see it is that it’s a bit like Motor Racing and road cars. NASA build the “prototypes” (ala Le Mans) at great expense and do a good job of it but it’s more about moving the goalposts forward rather than being financially viable.

Space X in particular and the other private ventures are taken the lessons learnt from the government “prototypes” and building something that will make going to space something far more common than it has been in the past because the costs are greatly reduced.

This could be the start of a new space golden era with the private companies doing the “basics” right and then NASA going for the big one... Mars.

It’s exciting times and Space X have earnt their right to be part of this coming chapter.

Just to be clear, I have over a decade of experience and multiple degrees in spacecraft navigation. So I'm probably not a moron. I think that to appreciate the roadster in space shots you need a bit of humor about the universe, humanity, reality... maybe it'll take you a while, but I hope you eventually can see this as the gem that I see it for.

But to a greater extent, what does being a moron have to do with it? That smart people don't get and/or like jokes?
