My friend Neil aka Protoman:

He deserves more views.

Still amazes me how people can listen to all of that mainstream garbage, and real talent never gets heard.

Hints why I don't listen to the radio (for any kind of rap station). Almost three years since I turned on the radio for anything else besides rock stations.

I know him and Bleubird. Was talking to Jacques (bleubird) and they basically said they're just doing stuff for fun now (hence their miami bass project Death Jam, video below) because it's too much work to support an album when what you think is your best work is slept on.

They've done it, but road life is a hard life.

Thanks for the information. I bet it is hard. But hey, as long as you are having fun with it, it makes it all that much better.

It's cool that you are friends with them. Next time you talk to them, tell them I said I like the music. I will check out that video in a sec.

I just watched that last link you posted up. If that is their new stuff, I really do like it. Gotta love that 90s sound.

Deleted x3 (no longer available on Youtube)

Neneh... :D

Always liked this too..

I think 'old skool' is subjective and different people will have different views on what it is and isn't...

For me, 'old skool' isn't about age / time - it's about style, and is the same for most genres, not just hip hop.

I think it's a way of referring to a style of music that is representative of what that genre was like when it first emerged / became popular. Alot of genres change over time, look how different hip hop is today compared to the late 80's / early 90's - same can be applied to some of the dance genres i.e. trance, drum and bass.

These might not be the best examples/explanation, but to me, old skool hip hop would be something whereby the lyrics were meaningful, not just bragging or abusing and the sound had some kind of melody / rhythm.

Meaningful lyrics were quite different, NWA and Public Enemy had attitude, but the lyrics also had meaning, other artists like Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Gangstarr, Young MC etc were less aggressive, but still had lyrical meaning.

Others will probably have different opinions, this is just my take on 'old skool' and how I would apply it to hip hop..

I could recommend RhymesVidz Youtube channel to all; some fine underground old skool gems found between his 400+ videos. Just like this one:

Or this one which i haven't heard since 2001 when i drove my bicycle back from the pub early in the morning, and i was listening to it on a mixtape:

FYI, we can consider this the de facto hip hop thread. Just no top40 bull.

New numonics w/ bleubird:

Broward county anthem lol

I guess this counts. Not as old as the other songs here, but still pretty good.

-Of course it counts! It's Guru and Preem ffs :D

-No offense b, but who's we? And this is the Golden Era, boom bap thread, so again, no offense but I don't personally think your criteria matches...
And while I'm here:

I'm kinda surprised Canibus isn't mentioned nowhere around here. He was definitely the illest in his time...
Haven't heard the Tara Chase joint in a while too so thought to share it with y'all, it's a lovely jam.

Stay safe y'all!

Apparently their album was to be released in 1995, but some idiot decided against it for some reason.. great group:

Anyone looking for some good hip hop

one of the best albums

Ah a breath of fresh air! Glad I found this thread...

Ol School, man where do I begin?
The Roots, Organix (They make the Jimmy Fallon Show)
Probably one of many reasons I love hip hop music. I really left mainstream rap (not all but anything on the radio basically or anything my friends listen to) in the late 90s. Found the underground and still only thing I listen to.

I think the music defined as Rap today is an entirely different thing than what I grew up listening to...I am actually looking foward to iTunes release of Homeboy Sandman's White Sands EP on tuesday. He is a different kind of dude with maybe the craziest lyrics and flow. Very cerebral and humor-witty. He takes ALOT of listens...his last year's album had a song called Musician that is a good song to start. Nice thread, enjoyed looking through this:tup:

If you like 808, this was all the fuss in Ft. Lauderdale this past weekend:

My favorite old school song definetly has to be craig mack's flava in ya ear, such an awesome instrumental...btw my new favorite rapper is jay electronica, that dude is a lyrical genius IMHO

What's with a lot of the old school houston hip hop scene? It sounds like they took some really good Jazz Hop and ruined it with wack rhymes. Prime example:

I would kill for an instrumental of that.

Edit: Ah, great. It was only made in 06 and there are plenty of instrumentals. They're not dumb after all.

Back once again,
this thread seems to be getting forgotten, but oh well.
Gems & bangers for y'all :D

Celph Titled is actually more recent stuff, but y'all have to give that album a listen!
Definitely one of the best albums in years..

Enjoy!!
