Frustrating race. I'm just going to be content with a Honda engine winning at Suzuka in front of the home crowd, and call it a day.

Decent points, even if McLaren squandered their 2v1 advantage.

Antonelli impressed again.

Hadjar quietly having a great race.

Nice result for Albon and Bearman.

Snooze fest.

The only amusement was Crofty being the first to start signaling that McLaren should let Oscar pass Norris and put pressure on Max, and Jacques hand waving it away until the end when everyone was wondering why McLaren didn't try something.

Terrible race. Who thought April was a good time for Suzuka?

Jacques Villeneuve wasn't the worst commentator ever. I find his French-Canadian accent very grating, and he isn't the most dynamic speaker, but what he said was generally quite good, I thought.

Dull race, Max excellent again, McLaren own goal really as Piastri could have at least put more pressure on Max than Lando. Need to sort themselves out or the drivers will start getting a bit fed up.

Antonelli, great pace, starting to look comfortable and confident in that Mercedes now, will start pushing George now I think. Very underrated start to his F1 career.

Ferrari, meh.

Regarding the Tsunoda/Lawson swap, on paper it probably looks average for Tsunoda but he's performed well in his first GP in that car, exceeded what Lawson did in 2 attempts and Lawson came home P17 in a car that has scored points with a less experience team mate at the wheel.

Better than an October red flag fest.

If I wasn't already up with my newborn, I'd be annoyed if I had stayed up just to watch this race at 1am cause that was a total snooze fest. Heck, It even helped put my kid to sleep so I guess that was a plus!

Great race by Max and a well deserved win. His driving skills certainly made the difference this weekend. Truly remarkable considering red bull is not the dominant car.

Looking at McLaren, this was a bit of a missed opportunity from a strategic standpoint.

Kimi is showing he is worth the hype. The way that kid build that gap on Lewis was impressive. He is quick. I reckon once he has got a few more races under his belt, he will keep Russell on his toes.

Ferrari seems to be in no mans land right now. Hopefully their rumored upgrade for Bahrain will help them because they need something to bring them alive.

Hadjar and Bearman are showing great promise as well.

Not the performance I expected from Yuki even though he got close to the points. That's not going to be enough though considering Max just won the race with that car so I guess that conversation will still be ongoing.

Another race where fast forward is your friend. Norris really needs to grow some balls and be more aggressive instead of dumb or he's going to be Bottas 2.4 and then Piastri takes his championship away. Or Max.

Bring back Fuji Speedway
Yup. I read many people complain about wide circuits, but just look at what we saw today. There’d be so much action at Fuji.

McLaren might have the chance to pincer with different strategies to get at least one car ahead, but lets hope they don't get caught up in some indecision or self-created fairness conundrum that ends up causing a snafu.
ack, don't want to have to quote myself.. but why McLaren, why???
Unpopular opinion but F1 has outgrown Suzuka, from a racing perspective and from a safety perspective. The racing is never been particularly good, but it seemingly gets a pass because of it standing in the history of the sport, and it's really lagging from a safety aspect.

Minimal run off in multiple fast parts of the track, and only tyres, no Techpro anywhere.
Nah, they cars need adjusting so that they can follow more closely, probably have a higher tyre degradation. Potentially review the sporting regulations and have minimum of 2 stop races to add more variety of strategy.
Why did they give Oscar the undercut on Lando?
I think it was to protect his own position from cars behind, interesting is confusion with the question when asked after the race.
Norris sometimes makes some daft decisions. What was the point in aiming for the grass? He cannot possibly think he can blame Verstappen for that.
Only thing I have on this point, I didn't like Ted saying that Max couldn't have been any further over - is there some British Tall-poppy syndrome for commentators against Lando, or do they just really love Max at the moment?

On the forward replay Max was not in the 'fast lane' in the pit, but straddling the centre of the lane, I'm not sure if when running the the lane drivers are meant to move to the fast lane if it is free?

Still Norris should have backed off and left the pits right behind Max instead of giving away a bunch of time....

Norris shouldn't have pitted with Max, he had a faster car and should have tried for an overcut, why didn't the team see that undercut wasn't especially powerful... at the very least if they left him out pushing a couple of laps it would have forced Max to push hard on his fresh tyres which can be bad for the tyres later.. Pitting and staying behind game Max all the advantage to manage the pace.
Pirelli should have brought softer tires for a more interesting race imo.
This 100%, another thing they should try would be the same as Monaco try forcing 2 pitstops. Use all three compounds in the race, or just have a rule to make 2 stops. It would cost nothing to try.... I just can't believe the amount of 1 stop races for the last decade... so boring 99% of the time.. 2 stop doesn't guarantee a more interesting race, but more often than not it is and it means there is more happening in the race.

The 2007 and 2008 Japanese Grand Prix's ruined Suzuka because they showed just how epic an alternative Japan has for F1 racing. Those were both incredible races. I could tell you so much more about the good from those two races than all the Suzuka races since then. Suzuka is clearly the better track to drive, there's no doubting it, but it's too narrow to race. One DRS zone into a flat-out corner isn't enough to help passing, and F1 is about the only series that hasn't had a truly frightening crash at 130R since it was reprofiled in 2005. Super Formula and Super GT have had enough barrier destroying or vaulting shunts there in the past few years that shows that the barriers closing up next to the braking point on the right after 130R are just badly placed and angled. It needs more space there.

Fuji, like Hockenheim, is wrongly hated by fans because it was a major redesign of a famously high-speed layout. However, for modern aerodynamics-based racing, they produce consistently some of the best wheel-to-wheel racing out there in every series.

Suzuka is rightfully legendary for all the right reasons, except one - racing. What was the last great Suzuka race? 2005? I'm genuinely asking because I think 2011 was an OK race and 2012 for a few incident and Kobayashi's result. But after that I struggle Tbh.

How about Kimi winning from 17th on the grid in 2005.... Pitstops for fuel only look strange, and it's also an odd highlights reel because there's quite a lot of on track passes in that race, and there would have been many position change from pitstops... also because that year was the single tyre per race year that was a bit of a regulations problem for a lot of people as there was the least on track passes.

I think that Suzuka race was great because the cars were smaller and more nimble, and there was more performance different when they had light fuel, and maybe some of them were also backing off to save fuel...

I wonder if the power modes could be standardised and there could be a limit to the amount of full power laps in a race or something, some kind of energy management, maybe a little bit like the push to pass in indycar where the driver need to manage the extra energy... at the moment, it's just managing the tyres, and the energy is just reactive to the team instructions if there's a problem.

All of that and more; mixed up grids (in this case because of rain later in Quali) have almost always provided a lot more action, even then there were still long periods of procession (Kimi getting stuck behind MSC and Button/Webber for what seemed like half the race).

Re: Fuji, it certainly wouldn't hurt to give it another go. The main concern I would have is that it just ends up being another DRS-fest where almost all the overtakes are done halfway down the main straight.

Great Job by Verstappen once again (even though I don't like him)!
Was also impressed by Antonelli and Hadjar.
But overall this GP was boring af and definitely not worth getting up early on Sunday.

Horner: "Max has been absolutely outstanding this weekend. The hard work was done yesterday but he was inch perfect in the race."

Horner: "It's a good thing you're already home in Japan because you're not getting on the 🤬 plane."

Good Things we learned this weekend:
Max is still an incredible driver and gave the RBR Honda a proper sendoff at Suzuka.
McLaren decided today would be the day to make a Ferrari-like strategy and pit Lando at the same time as Max. Magnified when Lando was released next to Max and was mad Max didn't give him space. McLaren was lucky there wasn't an unsafe release by them and they did nothing to capitalize on the 2 v 1.
Antonelli ran a great race and is showing a lot of people it will be very soon before he wins a GP.
Hadjar ran in the top 10 all day and out-did his former and current teammate by a good amount.

Things we learned this weekend:
Might be premature, but Tsundoa finishing 12th was a promising debut for him in the RBR. Still lower than where it should be.
Doohan raced well to stave off discussions of him getting the axe at this time, but Alpine is not doing themselves any favors.

Bad Things we learned this weekend:
Lawson running in the top 10 briefly due to strategy was interesting, but moving him to hard tires might have been a better choice and the fact he placed the lowest of the RB will not be helping his case to stay on there.
Was Stroll even there at any point this weekend? Felt like he was racing on his own in the middle of Tokyo, far away from Suzuka.
Red Bull is going to turn into a pumpkin if/when Max decides he wants to do something else.

Piastri 🤣, "is that it? Is that all the highlights?"
"Is that all that happened? Nothing happened"

Sums up the race perfectly. All they had to show was turn 1 of the first lap and the last turn of the last lap and that would be the perfect highlight clip.
