He re-overtook him then just backed all the way off.

Too bad for Russell... his lap looked great.
Being behind a car in Qualifying that close you might as well give up especially given it was a Racing Point that wasn't fast enough to get to the next session.

With Norris on P6 both Ferraris and Gasly need to go out on softs

Edit: They all three stayed on yellows...

Max under 1:15!

Ferrari is just giving up way too much downforce for that fast first sector to do a good third.

They're way off Merc and Red Bull.

Oh, and Honda for WCC next year. As long as they find someone faster than Gasly.

At the end of his final lap.

Didn't matter by then. He was already 2/10ths down in S1. He was never going to match the other two, and the Ferraris were such garbage in S3 that his third place was secure.

I wasn't suggesting it would. His awful sector 1 cost him pole.

That is the very bare minimum that is expected of him seeing how he is driving a car that is on par with Mercedes and Ferrari.

Bare minimum is the reason he's not going to be in that seat next year.

Nice to see Mclaren showing Renault what its engine is capable of...

Wonder how much longer Renault will keep Cyril if these mediocre results keep coming in.

I pick Lewis to #bless his way to a win tomorrow btw.

Interviewer: "Doesn't it feel good to finally have that pole?"
Max: "It's great that people will finally stop asking about it"
At least he didn't threaten to headbutt them this time.
