Forza Horizon 3 Sound talk

I got the Maserati now and it makes pleasant noise. Not as insane as NFS Most Wanted did it, but realistic and good enough. I think it wasn't changed from Horizon 2?

The Maseratis already sounded pretty good (as in, accurate)in F6 and H2 so thank God they carried those over faithfully.

I'm a little irked however, about the cars that do sound wrong and share sounds - M4, Supra, R34 - sound perfectly fine when an AI driver passes you by. *shakes head*

I don't know if the team at T10/PG are motivated enough to bring us another original Horizon/Motorsport game. I miss the previous gen Forza games; they achieved way more than what 6, H2 or 3 have.

HAHA! the F10 M5 and Veyron sound the same. What the? Sold my Veyron...

I am a bit disappointed when finding so many random, often overlooked cars that have a new and amazing sound, and other iconic cars having their unique sound from FM6 ditched and now duplicated in FH3. It's a bit lazy from the developers...

I think I've mentioned these before, but I found another two offenders using the same V8 sound:

-Ford Cobra R 2000
-Ford Cobra R (95?)
-Chevy SS
-Camaro Z28 (new one)
-Holden Maloo
-Holden Commodore (the HSV one)

Why? These cars had a unique sound in FM6 (except for the Maloo that wasn't in the game). IT wouldn't surprise me if the older Cobra R, the Shelby GT500 and other Holden cars sound the same too. On a positive note, I've discovered a few cars with very impressive sounds:

One completely random car that has a freaking beastly sound in FH3 that really surprised me is the Audi RS3. A car that many ignore and that it isn't even Forza Vista. It had a very bland L5 sound in FM6 and now it has all the crackles, pops, Dual-Clutch transmission popping and such. Add to that a very accurate 5 cylinder note. Best L5 in the game in my humble opinion.

The AMG A45 sounds a lot better now too. It's not the best 4 banger sound (I like them very rumbly; not flat and windy), but the exhaust popping, the crackles and transmission just like the RS3 make driving this car such a delight. The turbo whine is just so amazing as well.

^^ For once, I'd like to see them release a Forza game with just 100 cars and all of them with SPOT ON stock and upgrade sounds.

FM5 has some 200 cars yeah? Remember how faithfully the car sounds had been done (a few misses but very minor ones)?

sadly ive noticed that multiple cars are copy and pasted sounds from other cars.

I think the Aventador sounds much closer to the real thing than it did in FH2, perhaps not from inside but certainly exhaust noises outside. The induction noise of the NSX-R hitting v-tec in the interior view is another gem.

Personally I am a bit miffed that the GT350R comes with basically a re-EQ'd cross plane crank noise from any of the generic V8s in the game. Turn 10 absolutely nailed the sound in FM6, its a shame Playground couldn't get hold of/didn't use it...[/QUOTE]

Um, no they do not.

You should have kept your Veyron. :P

Okay, you are right. They don't sound entirely the same, but at low revs, you have to admit, it is the same sample. The Veyron has some generic modern V8 sound spliced into it as the revs go higher. Nice of you to put up the comparison, though. Thanks 👍

I like the EB110 a lot more, to be honest. Has more... soul to it.

Even though many cars sound disappointingly the same or too similar in H3, these two are not among the lot, as is evidenced by the videos posted by GT Guy.

Perhaps they share similar intake and turbo sounds but that's about it. Are you running the game through an amp/speakers?

As in you don't hear the engine whining or the exhaust rumbling when you go off-throttle. These cars IRL are as loud on lift-off throttle as they are on on-throttle. H2 and FM6 did the off throttle sounds nicely, but they have gone missing on a number of cars in H3: both the new GTRs, NSXs, M4 etc.

That could be a poorly balanced induction to exhaust ratio. Not necessarily a deal breaker for me but I can understand your frustration.

Request:
What about the best sounding cars added to the first comment?

Afraid I simply don't have the time for that - plus tastes can be somewhat subjective.

Guys - has anyone else noticed that OTHER GT350Rs have the correct sound yet your OWN one doesn't? (having the re-EQ'd V8 noise mentioned in the OP)
It's happened a couple of times where I have heard one go past, sounded exactly dead on, thought Playground fixed the noise, get in my own and be disappointed.
Today I set about trying to work out why that was, and as I was cruising around in my GT350R I found another one to street race with. It sounded pretty bang on, and the huge teller that it was a different sound is that it revved to a much higher pitch (in the small cinematic clip before the race) than mine did, and mine has the cams in it.

Would someone else be able to run a little test with a stock one to confirm?

EDIT - Same issue with the infamous F150 Raptor - OTHER trucks have a more correct-sounding 6cyl sound, whereas your own one has the well-mentioned V8 sound error.

Really hope they fix this! FM6 totally nailed the GT350R sound, and I reckon the sound file is in the game, just not matched to the car!

Boffin, this is a common issue that many have reported on the official forums. I have experienced it myself as well... i.e. the cars that do not sound right while you're driving them, magically sound perfect when one of the AI drivers pass you by.

There ain't much we can do except just hope they fix it in a content update. They may not, as they haven't quite addressed car sound issues even after 2 content updates.

I posted this earlier this week in the big thread but if you want your race exhaust to add more backfires you have to install it then switch cars and then switch back to the original car and now the car will backfire more, i have no idea why it only works this way.

Because it appears the game is just as buggy as FM6 was on release, unfortunately.

Another thing i found, the cars sound better when you use manual transmission without the clutch, the shifts sound better, try it on the new aventador.

Lol! This has been the case ever since they introduced m/w clutch in the Forza franchise. I selected it once, and even though it does add an extra layer of depth to the gameplay, the cars just lose that audible bark and oomph while downshifting (which certainly isn't the case IRL).

Boyyy is this my thread! Some may remember my FM6 one...but hey here goes.

A lot of cars got neglected, especially in the exhaust note area which they have no "fixed" since FM2 when exhaust note upgrades actually changed the sound of the engines, want a leap back in time? Check out these sound sample differences between upgrades from FM2, glorious:

DAT CRX SOUND THO!

So what about cars that sound amazing or surprising? Well luckerly my favourites haven't been neglected! However I will start with a let down section lol.

Most dissappointing

Daytona Hemi: That idle sound...OMFG. It's incredible...it's, mindblowingly teasing for a potentially outstanding sound, then you rev it a little and *raspberry sound* WUT! It's just a generic nascar V8 sound! Where's that throaty rasp?! Where's the gruling, booming, dirty V8 sound from the IDLE vanished to? I WANT THAT SOUND! Not this...whiney Nascar V8. Seriously earthshattering let down right there, what the hell went

Best sounding so far
---

Fiesta XR2: Sounds frigging amazing, it's close ish to how it sounds IRL but mixed up a little, the exhaust note burbles, the low RPM, the high RPM, interior and exterior this thing sound just superb, especially during 1V1 street race meets...YUM

2014 Ford Ranger T6 Rally Raid: O_O...DAMN SON DAT IDLE. Well hello TRY IT NOW! The idle sound to this thing is fantastic, one of the best in the entire game i'd say, now to say now I wish it followed the "character" of this sound throughout the rev range, sadly, it suffers from "idle n forget" syndrome where the engine sample is noticebly different from the idle sound, however...in this case, all is not lost as that engine/exhaust note is outstanding! It's loud, it's throaty, it burbles on up/down shifts like a mofo, it has a wonderfully dirty "off-throttle" sound, blip up/down sound (well played PG! First of only 3 cars i've noticed with this) and man it's a joy to rev, middle RPMs send my headphones into eargasm mode. Hands down one of the BEST recorded V8 samples IMHO in the game.

Opel Kadette: Kinda same as above as I believe it's using the same-ish sound sample, just modified a little, longer strain on mid-high note and a different off-throttle, low thorttle sound. Again, love this engine sample.

Reliant Supervan: Now i'm not sure here, it sounds bloody great, but is it RL sounding? Not sure...it has a nice spluttery sound both in the exhaust and the engine bay, however it dies off a little towards the high RPM but i was pleasently surprised to hear this thing sounds a lot better than expected, then got this one right, it could be improved (exhaust notes mannnnnn!) but it sounds struggling, whiney, sputtery...almost spot on reliant then :P.

Ford RS1600: A superb I4 sound stock and modified, not sure about real life-ness but sounds really nice, the majority of these samples are less aggressive versions of Pauls FF6 RS1600 from the car pack in FM6, lively and a nice drive.

Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG
: HOLY CRAP this sound! What on earth...it's BRUTAL, those shift pops, that exhaust buzz and RPM noise at high revs is pretty awesome, such a crafted sound and really surprised me when I drove it was not expectign this! Superb all round samples, I'd say for people to try this one!

73 XB Falcon GT:
Really nice classic V8 sound, seems different somehow, hard to describe, but it has a really really nice sound flow through the RPM, it's LOUD as well, which is always a plus, it has a certain character too it, attention to it, that could of be exploited more, but it's close to perfect, pretty unique.

Mine Cooper 65: They seem to of fixed this! It sounds a lot better in this than in FM6, that peppy little I4 kicks ass!

Any 2-stroke engine: LOL. Seriously just try the ESSE ESSE, the BMW Isetta...they sound so fun xD.

Meyers Manx: The only VW beetle-esq sound we have! Clearly running a beetle sound sample, but really suits it, again, it has certain changes to it's sample that make it stand out, fun car overall

FJ40 LC: Yay offroaders! Has again, a nice character to this (EDITED COZ I'M DUMB) I6 (not V8), pops are varied, not as "samey" but still a solid overall sound.

Lambo URUS: Meaty AF sounding V8, pretty awesome sample here, it's unique and has excellent range through RPM, will keep you smiling for it's drive overall!

There is many more. But i'd rather not wall-o-text any further. If this has helped people find some "good" sounds then go for it :), I will update with future posts on "must try" cars, thanks for some of the suggestions in here too I'll check em out.

The FJ40 is a straight 6.

Not that it's completely relevant to your post, but I recently got Dirt Rally and the physics and SOUNDS in that game just made me forget about Forza altogether!

You do realise that the Maloo and the GTS use the same engine (LSA), and the differences in the stock exhaust are basically zero right? The only real difference in reality is the slight change caused by the different body styles (ute to sedan) and that is very minor.

The FJ40 is a straight 6.

Oh damn, it is...

Wow /facepalm my bad.

Sorry, it sounds really V8 like in the game haha, maybe that old I6 just sounds great :P, edited anyway.

But yeah, that's my list so far. I am astonished by the Ranger T6, it has such a deafeningly noisy dirty V8 note it's an absolute blast, it shakes my whole room when i set the speakers on it, amazing.

I've been hunting the past day or so on/off for other hidden gems, plenty of "sounds decent" ones like the Z4 Racer, the SVT Cobra 2000 which has a good sample on it and others...trying to look for something un-expected!

Will keep on going :). It would be awesome if we could compile a list of "best sounding/sampled cars in FH3" eventually :), would be a excellent way for people to experience cars they may of overlooked in the past.

Nope. Unfortunately I live in America. I know very little about Australian cars. I did imagine they had the same engine though.

Which one is closer to the real thing?

Forza should borrow Dirt Rally's car sound recording/reproduction methods and do a copy/paste of that on ALL cars. :D
The craziest thing about that game is that the developers have straight up admitted that they weren't completely satisfied with their car audio (things like some cars sharing samples because cars weren't available to record or tight budget etc). They already sound that good and they are saying they can improve significantly. Madness.

The McLaren P1 sounds pretty good now, different from Horizon 2. The V12 AMGs (SL65, G65) are interesting too. While the first Horizon did a very realistic quiet rendition of the V12 in the S65, now their engine note was changed to have more of a screaming voice, like the old naturally aspirated Mercedes V12s or the Zonda. Strangely the Zonda itself was left alone, so it still sounds way off.

I still believe Grid Autosport did both the McLaren P1 and the quiet, yet very powerful sounding SL65 best. That combined with the Dirt Rally compliments above deserves a shoutout to @madfiddler :D

On second thoughts, driving Forza's P1 right after posting this, it's a decent new sound, but it's still a fairly generic rendition of the car overall. The off-throttle burble is shared with many cars, and the backfire in specific is the same standard noise all cars use. I remember watching Chris Harris' Yas Marina P1 review and how amazed I was when Grid rendered the same long lasting blue flames coming from the P1 rear on upshifts, with a distinct sound to them as well. Forza is a long way off from that.

The Corolla SR5. I added the sport carb and exhaust, but I doubt they affect the sound, so even stick is most sound this good. A gritty, muted growl rising to a sweet carb Four sound.

I agree - utter hogwash!

I bet you a thousand bucks right now if they narrow down the car list to about 50-100 and really get to work on getting the sounds right, they will all sound 100% spot on. They've gotten lazy... they just want to show the gold up front (lots of cars and places to race at) and slack of on the other key areas that made Forza such a great franchise to begin with.

I don't think they need to reduce cars. I think that they do have the capacity to pay more attention to sound but don't (this is something that applies to most car games TBH). I personally feel like the biggest problem with T10 is they seem to have a "that'll do" attitude towards aspects of their games that slip in quality slightly because the rest of the game as an average is so great, especially in comparison to that playstation game. The most blatant example I can think of this is the fact that the wrong rpm being displayed on some cars' interior rev counter that first showed up in FM5 is still an issue 3 games later. I feel like sound also in places gets this negligence, latest example being the sample mix ups with cars like the raptor and hummer that most likely won't change. The negligence is far from disastrous, mind, I just think more effort could be applied. If they didn't rest on their laurels as much they would make a great game damn near perfect.

The strange thing is the, the audio guy that's been on stream quite a few times now, I forget his name, but he's english and has the big lond beard, talks absolutely meticulously about sound design, layering, finding the cars to record, setup, equipment types, microphone types, positioning of audio, how it's used in the game and more. The guy comes across as really knowing his knives and forks about it all, from the prompt fic of the 350R where he admitted very quickly it was using the wrong engine sample, to talking about some of the more obscure cars him and the team got to physically record.

So it boggles my mind they'd ever have a "that'll do" attitude with guys like him, I think the problem now lies in the amount of cars in game, his team needs to have a fine tooth comb and start with the worst sounding cars first and work downwards.

As some of the examples I gave there is more than enough cars that sound incredible, but it's the bad ones that shine more and that's a shame.

Keep hunting and tweaking though guys, I'm sure there are more gems hiding in good sound :).

Speaking of which November grants us 8 cars instead of 7 this time, 1 car being a free car but represented as a brand new barn find in game which is super neat. It's probably only a returning FM3/FM4 car but still, 8 cars is 8 cars and i'm stoked as always to try them out!

Isn't that the same English gentleman who's now with PD?

Nooo I'm talking about Nick Wiswell:

Skip to 2 hours 50 mark, him :). No idea who you mean lol didn't know PD had some engineers, just a vacuum cleaner they occasionally recorded and distored to cover some cars ;).

The 8V Supersonic still has that really really weird cool sound to it...ooof, it's super nice, I wish again it kept it's character throughout the full RPM range but it's super nice to drive around slow too which always neat.

I actually wish the game had more diesals in it...just on some of the trucks, I think it would be cool/different :). Especially it's well recorded.
