With the first two nights of racing behind me (I'm currently tier 3, and I started the 2nd set of events), overall I like the game but I have some reservations which I'll get to later. I'd say the core gameplay is better than ever, the physics are the best I've experienced in a Forza game to date, the graphics are gorgeous and the track offerings seem better than ever. Plus the inclement weather and time progression are very well done and add immensely to the immersion factor. I also think they did a bang up job on the race menus, I can finally upgrade cars from the race menu right before a race.
I am having a lot of fun with this game, which to me is the most important thing of many things that I take into consideration when evaluating a new game The driving experience is just stellar now, not that it was bad in FM6, but FM7 feels like more than just a moderate improvement. Racing just feels more exhilarating now, more than ever. After playing 6 Forza Motorsport titles prior to this, you'd think I would feel somewhat jaded about FM7 but that's not the case at all. Turn 10 has managed to breathe fresh air into this long running game series and made it feel exciting again.
Now that the good stuff is out of the way, let's get on with my reservations about the game. I hate the AI, they seem completely and totally unaware that you are there and drive like mindless drones around the track, it honestly feels eerily similar to the AI of an early Gran Turismo game. I can't fathom how after 6 games that they couldn't get this part right.
Next up, is I despise that so many cars are locked up and are unattainable until they are offered in the specialty dealer or a Forzathon event. I fully understand that more and more developers are using these sort of tactics to prolong the life of their games and keep people playing as long as possible but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Now, I can see using say 5 cars as special rewards/prizes like they did with older Forza games like FM3 but the sheer amount of cars locked behind a prize wall is staggering and diminishes some of the freedom we previously had with previous titles being able to purchase cars we wanted, when we wanted them. I think a far better approach would be to create new cars as prize cars instead of locking out users from content in the stock game they paid for. For example, I like how many Porsches were offered as Forzathon event prizes in Horizon 3, I like the way Playground games handled it far better than this current system in FM7.
Lastly, I have to pick on both the loot box system and Mods, I really hate the idea of both, the mods somewhat to a lesser extent. I didn't use them much in FM6 and I suppose that I could ignore mods again now too, but I just don't think they belong in a racing game period, to me, mods stick out like sore thumb in a game that's attempting to be somewhat realistic and immersive.
