French Presidential Election and Future of France

Forgive me if i'm wrong, but isn't socailism- Communism???!:nervous: I might be wrong, i hope i'm wrong. So Sarkozy took the boot and now we have a socialist presidant in France. According to the local news station, this might be a good thing for the debt crisis.

No. That is a common misconception. Socialism is not communism. However socialism can be considered a step towards communism.

This could be a very good thing!

Communism is an extreme just like capitalism. Socialism falls somewhere in between.

@swampdude, you're from Ontario, for goodness sake (likewise ;)) You should know better! Go google Tommy Douglas and socialism in Canada.

Socialist ideology won't solve the eurozone crisis.

But I guess people were fed up of Sarkozy's dilly-dallying enought to vote in someone who thinks that austerity isn't the answer.

Interesting.

I've always seen France as slightly left-leaning anyway, so it's no great surprise that Hollande has got in. None of his policies seem particularly radical so it's probably as simple as France wanting a bit of change. Sarkozy hasn't really helped France reduce its deficit, so it's time for Hollande to have a go.

I always thought of France as being politically more right, but culturally more left. They haven't had a socialist President since Mitterand, but always make the news with their tanker strikes and civil unrest.

It'll be interesting to see what Hollande does what Sarkozy didn't, or couldn't.

Yeah, that's more what I was suggesting. I can't see a socialist party being any harm to the country as a whole, and perhaps even beneficial, but whether it works as part of the EU is a different matter.

Germany's in its own pot but I think that country is in a position to take over Europe again. That would be interesting.

Stupidity achives what Hitler could not. :) If the Euro does fall down the drain and Germany has to bail everybody, Germany could take over europe.

How can Germany bail out the eurozone if it's using the same currency which has crippled others? That's part of the problem.

The eurozone is relying on help from China and to a lesser extent, EU member states who don't use the euro. Although we're having our own problems, to be fair.

Socialism seems to be MUCH more accepted and common in Europe. In this part of the world the scare of "Oh my GOD, it's socialism!!!" from the Cold War is still around, especially in the US. The NDP getting official opposition was surprise to a lot of people here.

But still, kudos France! Keep it going with the socialism :D

Vote NDP :D

Germany has the strongest economy in Europe whether or not the Euro is bogus. If everybody falls they'll be the last to go and that's a good time to start soaking up some assets.

Keef

Germany does have a strong economy, but if the euro continues to devalue then there's a limit to how much it can take. The less the euro is worth, the less money businesses can make from exporting goods and their own economy starts to suffer.

Then it will be the Germans and Dutch who have their own strong currency. :D
