If you want to be accurate the Pontiac GTO was the first American car to be called a supercar by an American publication in early 1965.

GT40 was never meant to be fast road car it was meant to beat Ferrari at Le Mans 24h, not that it makes the road cars any less supercar than they are. Interesting thing is that some sources say that Ferrari Daytona was the fastest production car and some sources say that Ford GT40 road car was, probably because it's not really clear if there were enough GT40 road cars made for it to be considered as a production car.
