Future Of Gran Turismo (Discussion)

You didn't really hit a nerve, mate. What I'm simply saying is, that I find it incredible that people can call a gaming series that has made billions of $ over almost two decades, simply because they've made some mediocre titles. In my opinion GT6 is a GT5 2.0, the way GT5 should've been, not to mention that the title is still on the old platform. GT7 will be on the PS4, which will open up whole new opportunities in terms of realism and graphics etc.
Furthermore, I'm not even disagreeing with you on the point that GT5 (not so much), but GT6 have been a disappointment, especially after GT4, which was truly brilliant.
Pan Am, Commodore and Polaroid would like to say hello. No business is immune to failure, even industry leaders. Things move at a much quicker pace these days, look at how quickly Blackberry fell from being the standard phone to almost nothing...couple of years maybe. The buying public is much more fickle and much less loyal than it has ever been and I think GT6 sales reflect that to a great degree. It's too early too tell, but I wouldn't be surprised either way.

And that's not including the competition they'll have on next gen consoles which will be fierce. PCars and Driveclub already have the lead on the graphics front and are not likely to be exceeded simply due to the sheer volume of the task for PD and it's relatively small size. GT could pull a rabbit out of a hat (there's one in every race so they aren't in short supply) and revitalize GT or they may stick to what they know and if it's the same old, same old, the public may have had enough.

Do we need picture mode if they follow gt6 and eliminate the community part like in 5, to stop spread of hacks, sadly it doesn't stop people, so I'd say bring back community options and lose focus on the photo mode, I know you'd rather race than go and move a camera.

It's too early too tell, but I wouldn't be surprised either way.

That is basically the point I've been trying to make the whole time.
Again, I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm not saying that GT6 wasn't a pretty big failure, but like you (and I) said it's just too early to tell.

The competition is there, that's true, but competition can be and most likely will be good and will push PD (hopefully) to really try hard. The thing GT6 held back the most was the fact that it's still on the PS3, it's just an old platform and the PS4 offers much more hardware power to really push it in terms of graphics and physics and I do think that GT7 could (and should) be a big step forward over GT6, but again saying that PD is going to ditch Gran Turismo completely is (imo) a little far-fetched and is not going to happen unless they provide a substitude, and not as long as the franchise is still generating revenue.

I reckon GT7 won't be a 'jaw-dropping' game since one of the confirmed news is that the standard cars will be included. It looks like PD is gonna stay with their traditional way. Of course, GT7 will be better than GT6 but not by huge amount. Sadly, I'll be one of the people that will preorder the game.

I see no future I really think it's the end of an era, GT series was the founding father of the simulation racing car era, but they left their roots to go into other avenues, for example Gt academy, photo making, kaz spending money & time in Nuremburg racing GT-R's, etc.

If some of you all been with GT since day one you all know what I'm talking about, seems like other titles learned from them Forza, Asetto Corsa, & now PROJECT CARS which I'm pretty sure they will overtake GT completely, after the 15 yrs GT had been in the game and GT6 hasn't been out but 7 months and PD & Kaz are already talking about GT7 coming out soon because he didn't want to make a prologue he said? Then what is GT6? The prologue for GT7? Things that make a Man say hum..

Seems like a MONEY SCHEME to me, think about it, I purchased the game full price then I purchased $150 in on line credits just because I don't have the time as I use too, to keep going round in circles over & over on the same track in which the game doesn't pay out as much as the titles before just to make a buck HELLO MICRO TRANSACTION!! & now they decide to focus on a GT7? Micro transaction deluxe NEVER AGAIN! Unbelievable!

No my friends I hope I'm wrong but GT has PUT a severe bad taste in a lot of us, so that being said come on PROJECT CARS please show me something.....something new something fresh hope you been watching Gran Turismo, & their silly schemes for a buck along with their lack of focus to the product & especially the lack of focus to their fans who got them where they are today, so please be everything you say you're going to be and then some.

How good pCars will performs on PS4 will tell us the future of GT. If pCars do everything right, (difficoult but possible since they are tweaking physics and finishing content as we speak) then Poliphony will need to step up their standards. :).

But since Kaz already proved to have no interest in gameplay features, PD will end up using all their resurces with things like photo modes, b,c,d spec, gps-scam features, awkward vision GT cars, FIA badges, GT Academy rebranded in "FIA Online Championship", announcements of future announcements... more Nissan GT-R's.
Kaz lives for unconventional stuff for the sake of being unconventional, he doesn't care about people having a great race.
That's exactly where pCars will find the room to open PS4 user's heart with a picklock, but they need to do lot of things right.

I think PD will focus on AI/racing aspects again... If they do, that will settle most players down.

No one likes current GT6 offline races right now. I've never heard anyone say they do.

A reworked AI is all they need, except people gripe about what truly are wonderful graphics.

There is some crossover for sure but the target audience for PCars is different than GT. PCars is more targeted to the racing enthusiast or sim-racer wannabe...like me:lol: There won't be any cones or moon missions or 15 hp cars, or Daihatsu Midgets or stars or trophies for buying your tenth car or having an empty bank account. The AI won't have an algorithm built in where it sees you are far behind, feels sorry for you, then shaves 10 seconds off it's laptime to let you catch up. A lot of the stuff that is appealing to GT users just won't be in PCars. It's a smaller audience for the game and I'm certain they know that as well.

@Tenacious D and many of his friends would like to say hello.

I personally think GT7 will fall in quality but will sell well the same way the PS3 GTs have fallen but selling well which is a bit of a shame. I really want Forza to outshine GT so PD can do the best they can to get back the lead and give us an outstanding GT at the same time.

Since we've seen nothing of the game so far, the benefit of doubt is all I can give PD aside from my first post denoting points for improvement.

GT6, despite its flaws currently stands as my favorite of the series.

Everyone is making some good points here...but the problem being with this game and any "mainstream" game is...say it with me:

accessibility

Unfortunately the game will have some dumbed down features not exactly catering to us, but the majority so they dont throw their controller and go "🤬 THIS GAME!!!" and I want my money back....so keep this in mind...it will be great with what most have suggested being veterans of the series but think of what marketting is telling product managers and suggesting to dial it back for new customers...or larger audience...that equals more money.....which it sucks knowing this....why the game isn't Assetto Corsa, rFactor, iRacing, or something along those lines unfortunately.

I love the game for the ease of getting in and out of a game and being able to link up now and then with some co-workers and friends that don't do so well in the sims ;)

Options, buddy.

In the end, the game needs to cater to everyone... The only way to do that is to put in hundreds of game modes... I think that will make the game less repetitive... Kinda like the Project Gotham Racing series.

Giving some people a demolition derby, others full-length endurance races, and me some rallying/touring cars will make most people happy. :)

As @ShiftingGears mentions, options. Let the people choose what they find fun. Drifting, drag racing, rally, touring cars, endurance, super cars, time attack, autocross... All worth it in my opinion. I'll bold the ones I would take part in, to demonstrate the way that it can be used to add versatility - one person can find so many interests in a game with many game modes...

To this day I miss Rallying at least GT3 Rallying for some reason couldn't get into GT4 Rallying except Grand Canyon.

PD/Kaz need to make everyone happy, but the thing is don't forget the people that were your first fans. As we all know bandwagon fans come and go in any situation games, sports, movies etc etc. There are those like people here at GTplanet that have been lifelong fans I say cater to the people that really love this game. Trying to go too mainstream gets you GT5 and GT6.

@ITCC_Andrew all they have to do is put back Full length endurances with B-spec(GT4 style it was perfect why change it), and bring back All Rallying Tracks from Across GT's franchise history.

You have a point there, and I agree with you, there are some differences in target audience, but if we consider the name "GT real driving simulator" we find the crossover, as you said. pCars of course will focus more on racing but it will be realistic and simulative. These two words contributed to the success of GT franchise, if people will find out some is doing better and more realistic simulations on PS4 then GT will have a serious contender for the 60% of their customers.

There's also a (small?) percentage of people that don't want to go pc but is massively pissed of with PD and is looking forward to let Kaz know much better someone else game is compared to GT.

You have to realize though, we aren't the typical GT fans. I'm not that certain that their typical customer [which isn't us] is all that interested in real competitive, door to door racing and all that comes with it, they just want their bazillion cars and their cool features, throw some cars on the track and let me bang out a few laps from the couch. PCars has a very low car count relatively and that will turn many, if not most GT fans off. I think PCars will sell decently considering it's on a next gen console but DriveClub will garner some attention too, kind of splitting the audience.
I want GT to move more towards real racing, but I'm fairly certain most of their fanbase doesn't want things overly complicated or overly "real" from the racing standpoint. They'll probably move towards more realistic racing for GT7 but only about halfway.

No they want the competitive racing I can guarantee that. When I got Gran Turismo 3 Christmas of 2002(Yeah I still remember) I was only 12 at first I was bored with the game cause didn't like it that much. Then noticed it had unlockables in Arcade Mode like certain tracks, and from there went over to Career Mode was having a blast even did my first endurance race believe the one at Seattle to get the Toyota GT-one I believe it was. Trust me though not all kids are just mindless zombies though.

I remember GT being a fun competitive game at that point that I wanted to get better at especially those licenses, and also to say they want the bazillion cars. I'd rather say I want carefully selected bazillion cars again having 3 car companies with 10 pages while Cadillac only has 1 little car that has been in since GT4 is a travesty. I think everyone here understands that PD is a Japanese company, and they deserve to give those car companies over there favoritism, but EA with their NFS series don't play favorites at least every country had some major cars thrown in to show support. Give or take EA doesn't have to worry about 700-1500(GT4-GT7(Assuming they have 1500 or more)).

Please explain then how GT5 sold 11 million copies with no decent offline racing in the game for a player with any skills at all? By that I mean, I take the same car as the AI, same setup and race head to head and the outcome is in jeopardy depending on the difficulty settings. I don't consider it racing when I easily make up a 30 second gap in 4 laps with 100 less hp and 1 less tire compound. While you're at it, explain how the AI in GT6 got worse and people continue to buy the game. Online IMO is barebones and thrown in to the game just because...but regardless it's a tiny, tiny handful of people relative to the sales so it's not a viable alternative for 99% of GT fans.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that at this point, the GT series has the worst racing in the history of racing videogames. I'd love an explanation of how that meshes with people wanting racing, and continuing to buy the game in spite of the fact it has no real racing.

Because before release GT5 was considered the Messiah of sim racing, the hype reached before release was something unbelievable. And when people realized off line racing was bad they started complaining on the forums like me and you.
And yet it had the best staying power probably in the history of game sales. Doesn't fly.

How many people preordered GT5?
I NEVER ever preordered anything in my life, yet I preordered GT5.
I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Which is why I specified staying power and not initial sales.

GT3-4 had an UI that set standards, GT6 used that Windows 8 knock off of an interface in it's game. Yeah, it worked
& seemed user friendly with flexibility, but it just seemed so lifeless. There were some nice features in that game, but
really, there is no way that Gt6's UI was going anywhere. SOLUTION GT3 next gen throwback UI version.

Talk about what you think will happen to the Gran Turismo Series as a whole when GT7 hits the market.

I'll think it will sell better than drive club, under certain circumstances.

GT7 will likely out sell driveclub, still how will the fans react to the little things that aren't right in this game?
My points are; game UI, split screen, player PS account save data, etc. Bring back the qualities that Made GT3
a leader in sells and the 9.8 it was back in the day.

@Superdirector might want to combine posts if possible.

The hype for GT5 was unreal at that time didn't know what I knew now. I still don't ever pre-order anything to this day, but even still I had to have GT5 is what I remember telling myself. Then as we all know it was out, and the backlash that came with it. One thing you know, and I'm certain you know they won't tell you how many returned the game, and trust me I'm on your side I'm not currently happy with GT series at the moment I went out looking which is how I found F1 2012 only thing about F1 is just Formula 1 cars while I can't be upset with the game cause it's excellent. Just hope Project Cars takes off, and knocks GT around a little bit.

Oh and believe you me although GT may have sold that 11 million it's future titles GT6 and GT7 will be taking a few hits. Think of it this way even though now PD is beginning to do something about GT6 it might be too little too late for it. Why because they waited how long to really crank out the massive updates 6 months???

Even GTA5 for all it's problems had updates after updates within months of it's release.

Gran Turismo will either continue with the same exact formula as it has been for 15 years, or will have an overhaul. As some reviews said, the trackday in GT6, which you did the instant you turn on the game, was a step to the right direction but it quickly fell into the old career mode grind.

Reward 1/5
What ever it was, GT3 did things right. I loved the grind in Gran Turismo 3 :A-Spec because it seemed to challenge
you with milestones of competition while offering rare rewards once you do. You could pass with silver or bronze, but
with every gold, there was that awesome reward thing.....

Old dog, New Tricks 2/5
You can teach an old dog new tricks. My point is, GT7 can take old things and evolve them. Take a good look at
Grand theft Auto. Same formula, new tricks!!!! That's all I was pointing out. Knowing what direction to go & not
confusing the differences of changing the foundation or theme of a game from the evolution of a game is important
thing. I guess I was thinking you were going in that direction, so I thought I should share a little something I saw in
the industry. The turn of gaming politics. (Just my opinion, but it seems to be happening everywhere these days.

Looking Back 3/5
Politely; I'm asking you to look back & see how games have evolved without losing their way. GT is a simulator,
Forza was a game. When they tried to go sim, the game started looking like GT, but it never evolved because
evolution is "change". Well if it seems like Assetto Corsa or Project Cars, is it soo different now? Simply put, change
is evolution. When you grow you evolve. When you conform, you die. Forza may have got sounds and car customization right, however; this game's learning curve never touched GT & that is a powerful thing. GT is about
virtual reality. Forza 5 is about mocking this, using cosmetics, but GT in the long run wins there every time..

Originality 4/5
The reason why this will remain to be the single most important truth of all topics (concerning the GT community posts) is because everyday we see people conform. Once they conform, LIKE FOR EXAMPLE; somebody decides to dress like or act like somebody else, how can you say that is unique or genuine? When some guy like JZ makes a beat, then some fricken kid takes fruity loops and nearly copies the same dang thing; people say that this guy seems just like, um.., you know who.. It instantly shows who is the dominator & source, the rest is dead weight.
(This happened to Halo, & man, there is a mess down in their community just because of it)

The Bottum Line 5/5
My point is that games are just throwing in a template design & GT6 is a perfect example of that in a indirect way.
If GT7 should repeat this mistake, even next gen graphics will not wash away a sin as this, thus it will effect it's
reputation. The game may sell, Idk, but seriously, we will have some disappointments. We'll play it, because its the
only game worth playing, but once some other game comes along with this same qualities but gets smart, GT7 will
be contested. The reason why I said this is because;there is nothing wrong with the formula, it's all about
the quality invested in that formula; that is the tide of GT discussion in a single nut shell. Hope my comment
was an inspiration...

Honestly I think they need to get rid of the thinking that 'we can't remove this car because there are fans of it' rubbish.

Start with a blank slate of cars that you have licenses for. Eliminate all the standard cars and really have a look at what you've got so far premium wise then flesh out the lineups from there. The 1000+ cars number is horrible marketing ******** when only 20% are worthy of the engine the game runs on.

Maybe make 450-500 Premium cars (wouldn't be hard to make another 200 or so) and then seriously look at hiring proper sound guys from Forza, Need for Speed, GTR/Simbin games and make sure they sound as realistic as possible.

I think people would be much happier with that rather than playing the same 1.4 Renault Megane II from GT4 that they have done for the past ten years.

Deleting cars doesn't mean that you magically get 500 new premium cars to replace them.
If the old cars can be kept with minimal effort and time - why not.
Obviously though they should hire some more and better people in the sound, AI and modelling department.
