General Model Kit Building Thread

Do you live in Victoria? If so, what store did you purchase it from?

The only stores near me that seem to ever stock Tamiya products are places like Toyworld and the odd hobby shop here and there.

Post script: Anyone who has ever recieved a model kit from overseas ever had any problems regarding damaging of the box or anything? Just curious, though I doubt it will be a problem, I just want to know if I'd ever expect anything like this.

No I don't live in victoria but I just returned from my holiday there. I know two places where you can buy tamiya kits in vic. 1. On flinders street look for hearns hobbies, its not in a shopping centre but on the side. 2. There is a shop in the HighPoint Shopping centre called games world. They sell puzzles and models cars. Goodluck and Hope that helped.

First post in this thread. Just got myself this spanking MCR (Matchless Crowd Racing) R34 GT-R by Aoshima...

Hello fellow model builders!

I've built several models over the last 5-6 years. Started out building an F-111 fighter plane, then moved on to cars. I'm very impressed with the fit, quality and step by step directions Taminya models give compared to other model brands, so I seem to gravitate to building them more then anything else.
My 1st car I built was an '99 Calsonic Skyline JGTC car. Turned out pretty good. Then went on to a Toyota GT-One followed by a Blaupunket 962C Porsche- it was my best yet, mostly because there was barely any detail in the kit (No engine to build nor much suspension to put together). Overall, not very impressed with it as a challenge :( . Sadly I have no pictures of the above nor do they exist anymore. Never leave your models on display when your 3year old cousin comes over to "play" . A lesson learnt  .

Now on to my latest project.....which has spread out over a year  .

Its a Nissan Skyline GTR Nur Spec II. Here is the current progress;
model002hi2.jpg

Silver wheels look better then mat black :P
model001va0.jpg

Surprised how blotchy the red looks. I never noticed it before. And yes, I have a serious toe-in issue :)

I started this over a year ago and it was turning out to be my most detailed and quality model yet. All progress was halted when I painted the body and accidently sprayed to close, resulting in several runs on the paint work. I poured a container of acetone and sat the body and F & R bumper in, with the aim of stripping the paint and starting again. Didn't go to plan, with the bumpers warping and the body in a similar state. Shouldn't have kept them in so long :scared: .
I got fed up with it and packed it up, only just remembering it existed when I viewed this thread  . I'll be going back to school in the next week, thus don't have a genuine income for the next 18 weeks so I'm hoping to amuse myself by finally finishing my project.

Regrets.
After looking at how damn good Slick Ricks Skyline looks in an earlier post, I'm starting to regret not following the instructions 100% :guilty: . I really can't believe how good red seats look  . The white body also stands out more then I realised, yet I will finish what I started by continuing to progress with red body, black bonnet, silver wheels combonation.

So anyway, expect updates in the next couple of weeks. I first have to purchase a whole other kit to finish it

guess i'll bring this thread back to life...

havent touched my svt lightning in probably 2+ years.. just re-read thru this whole thread and it really makes me wanna get back into model building. i'll snap some pics possibly when i get back home tomorrow since i never did in the 1st place.. that is if there is even a point to, cant remember what is even done at this point in time.

dont let this thread die.. its starting to get me motivated haha

I'm in the same boat... I've got an unfinished model (I've made a few posts about the blasted thing) that I haven't touched in at least a year and a half - I can't muster the motivation to finish it.
Eventually...

Same, Ive got two unfinished models. I would get back to them but my paints have dried and separated and stuff. Cant be bothered to get a whole bunch of new ones atm.

Redgodzila it will look better when its finished but it doesn't have to be perfect, you get better the more you do so dont worry about the colour too much.

Currently building a Tamiya Mobil 1 NSX and an Aoshima A'Pex project FD3S RX7!! I'll post pics when completed!! NSX just needs interior, paint and decals to be finished, but there has been hardly any work done on the RX7!! In the cupboard there's probably another 40 to build!! These include Jag XJR9, Porsche 956/962, Jag XJS, Ferrari 599 GTB, WRC Scoobie and lots more!!

Matt

I would love to say that I've kept building away, but unfortuantly I haven't been able to work on anything since Christmas. The packing, move, unpacking then lack of space has left me with some models that I really want to build sitting in the closet collecting dust. I can comment that I was able to pick up a brand new Tamiya Calsonic JGTC Skyline for only $7. :D 👍

Ooh, good deal on the Tamiya. Ebay?

I've got a few lined up in their boxes, waiting. '69 Camaro Z/28, '94 Impala SS, '87 Buick GNX, (All Revell/Monogram), a Tamiya 1988 911 Turbo, and a Fujimi Ferrari 365 GTS/4 - That one cost me almost fifty bucks shipped, so I will build it one day. But I'm going to wait on that one until I have the time to do a good job on it.

Currently building this:

But I'm yet to progress further due to a loss of black paint (which is used up quickly) and simply because I'm not sure whether to go with the Nismo add-ons or just keep it a standard Nissan.

Edit: Damn, I'd love to throw these wheels on a future project:

Yep! Mint in the box and still shrink wrapped. Plus it was only $5 shipping to Canada.

Right now I have a whole closet full, everything from the Civic hatch that was released by Revell ($5 at Toys'R'Us at Christmas) to a 1969 El Camino SS that I have big plans for. Once I find some space, it should hopefully keep me content.

If your looking for an easy build to help get you back into the spirit of building, the Tamiya 911 Turbo you have is pretty easy and shouldn't take you too long to complete. I definitely recommend it to ease you back into the hobby as its a pretty decent model with not many parts.

Hi guys, i'm currently building a Peugeot 307 WRC by AirFix and it's 1:43 Scale. I am having trouble painting the grille on the front because the grille is extremely small. You know how the 307 WRC's grille is split? Well thats why. Got any tips? Help is appreciated.

Glue it together (out of the car), and spraypaint it. Should be easier to get even coverage like that. Or, if it's already in the car, mask it off and paint it.

It'd be easier to help with pictures of the actual thing, but looking at real pictures of the WRC, I think this may work.

Try diluting the paint and applying it to the grille. That way, the paint flows easier into any crevices.

P.S: How is the kit? From my personal experience, AirFix models were always rather vague in instructions, and the parts-quality was terrible... Revell's plight is enough, thank you.

Hello all I'm new here. I have a deep love for all the different types of car in GT1-4. I have posted my work on site's from AutoMotive Forums to Scale Auto. Some one on SAF has started a Gran Turismo Build Off but I can get the site to come up, so I will post what i'm going to do here first. Heres a list of some of the car I want to build. This list will have some images. I don't know if this site can hold all the images from my list; so I will give you some images on the best ones I like.

well first off Over here In tha U.S. or the stats like Christmas time, it's just that time of the year Oct is the month for that. and that that on that Issuse. An yes I'm a big fan or the GT- trilogy I dont have a PS3 yet but I'm working on it.
As for the car here's where I'm at now on this build my painted model. at first i thought I had the right type of color but after the last cot went on there was to much red added to tha mix and it came out as you see it.
GranTurisom4carshotsa33.jpg

Ok Ok lets go back to the start of this mess-up; first i started off with basic testors silver once that was dry "stupid me"!! I went over it with Alclad II to make the silver stand out that was the rong thing to do( that's where thing started to go rong. here's the first 2 images:
GranTurisom4carshotsa30.jpg

GranTurisom4carshotsa31.jpg

Ok now time for the paint mix, I started with (All paint use is Testors) a Mt-Red mixed with some burgundy, I thought I had it look here.
http://s162.photobucket.com/albums/...tion=view&current=GranTurisom4carshotsa32.jpg
Well the next thing to go rong was the amount of thinner I put in the mixed paint not as much as I realy need so the paint came out heavy & had a lot of realy bad runs so I fixed thim and moved on.
http://s162.photobucket.com/albums/...tion=view&current=GranTurisom4carshotsa34.jpg
Just at the end of the paint job I mixed it right and the paint come out smooth "BUT" tha rong shade of red this is the end result.
GranTurisom4carshotsa33.jpg

GranTurisom4carshotsa35.jpg

Even though the color was not just right I went over the rear view mirrors to keep the color matched. I going to keep the color the way it is if I go over it there will be to much paint on it and sanding it will not work on Enamel well.
So next I will start on the Interior and the Black trim on the body, I'm going to add one of my oun tunner styled mufflers.
Thanks for looking!

Yes but I have done a lot better on my paint jobs some times I forget to put in a lot of thinner. For me I know just the right amount to make my mix come out right (but not this time.
But thanks

Ok Guys here's an up date on the A160 build I'm finished with it here's the pix of the Car?/Mini Van? or what ever you want to call it.
GranTurisom4carshotsa94.jpg

GranTurisom4carshotsa97.jpg

These next images have a small story with thim (want to hear it?) Hear it go's:
Wile playing the game I needed to A160 to take terns better so I got the race kit. Then I need more speed so I droped the stock muffler an got a full race kit, to give the A160 107 Hp I know that's some what slow (but I like those little cars') any way here are the pix of the drop of the stock muffler to the race muffler.
GranTurisom4carshotsa92.jpg

GranTurisom4carshotsa93.jpg

I know your going to say why is the stock muffler looking so used Remember you have to buy the car used an I raced it a lot that why the under body look's weathered.
Here's a link to the full build.
