For a smaller developer like Genki that doesn't have the resources of Polyphony, MS or EA, then re-licensing the cars might be an issue for a TXR3 re-release. Personally, I could care less so long as we get another TXR4. I think the way around it is two fold really. Have it so we can re-name the cars like in previous installments, and the 2nd way is just have a paint booth mode where you can draw the badges for make and model. Boom, done! In pre-TXR3 installements, the cars had drivetrain characteristics of their “real-life” counterparts anyways, so big deal. It was the car, just without the badge. Also, keep the TXR arcadey feel of it, there's enough sim racers out there. I think keeping a TXR racer feel to it, but add a depth to it similar to an RPG. You can have different tuning houses “build” your engine, and depending on who touches the car will change how the game unfolds. That's just one example.

Also, speaking of licensing, I remember back in 2002 or so reading a statement from Honda about licensing their cars for TXR3, and it wasn't the illegal street racing part that is so commonly said. It was their issue with swapping the engines. At the time, Honda was concerned with that aspect of the game because Honda wanted to maintain their image of being reliable quality cars, and having the ability to swap engines was contrary to that image. Yeah, the illegal racing was a concern, but it was really the swap-ability part.

I saw on this thread that TXR1 was re-released? Source? I haven't heard anything about that.

it'll depend what you mean by arcady. pretty much every "sim" is arcadish in some ways. I like the more realistic handling, tuning that some txr games had. while having no damage, that some of the sims do. i didnt like itc or wangan midnight as much as txr3, or d2.

txrd2 was extremely sim like if you play with a logitech wheel. and i would say more sim like than anything else i got into on ps2. while txr3 was still the only game i played where you had to manage engine heat. turning in txr3 was also somewhat realistic, other than the fact that it was a little slippery. while itc was really arcady with how fast you can drift and maintain speeds, without much sacrifice to the tire wear. it was a fun game, but not as good as 3 was.

I didn't say that TXR1 was re-released. I was replying to someone who thinks that licensing cost was why we didn't have a re-release of the previous TXR. Which I disagreed as ITC and TXR1 had the smallest vehicle count (so least cost for licensing) yet they weren't re-released. Which means that there might be another factor why we haven't seen another TXR on a console.

Unless Genki doesn't have enough money to even pay for the licensing cost of just 15 cars but since they put on their website that they have an annual sale of 1,400 million yen in 2015($11 million USD), I find it hard to believe.

Edit: Heck, even Drift Street Japan, a very recent Low Budget racing game had licensed cars. (Although whether if the dev actually had license to use those cars or just used them without license is up for debate)

I was looking at some of their recent tweets and was able to translate the entire twitter page thanks to google and according to Genki, it seems like they are aiming to release the next TXR game this year. *Will post the tweets later today after school since Twitter is blocked here.*

Hype train anyone?

I've been on the hype train since this thread began. Can't wait to see them! :dopey:

Yeah, there's some arcadyness to just about every sim game, but I guess for me is when I say arcadey is being able to hit walls and cars and not have the car all beat up and undrivable, being able to do 190+ on the C1, and being able to toss around cars pretty easily. I do however like the more realistic handling characteristics myself because it makes the game more fun, and you grow a certain affinity towards certain models. They are more special in a sense. In TXR3, all the cars to me felt similar. 4wd, FR, MR, RR, etc. The FR cars don't throttle steer for example. However, it's cool how you've got no power under say 4k, you've gotta maintain engine temps, but I'm still not sure if upgraded cooling actually did anything for cooling, lol. TXR2 car characteristics felt appropriate (not good, just appropriate) , esp the FR and MR cars, particularly how the MR cars would like to rotate, oh and the cars performance starts to degrade after 12miles. Kinda neat. I guess for me I just don't want it to be so technical that I get bogged down in tuning every single nuance that it becomes more about engineering instead of just having fun street racing while figuring out how to race faster :)

Alright, it kinda' sounded like it, anyways got it.

I've got a question for a future TXR since thanks to pokemon we've got some info, online play will be a given, so how would you like the online play to be like? A match finder like Street Fighter, a lobby mode where you can find matches, where it's like the game that you drive around the streets challenging and rejecting any races as you see fit. Or, and my personal fave, a "lobby mode" that lets you park your car in the rest areas to hang out, chat, walk around check out the other cars and then take races or just go out cruising from there and see what you see on the "circuit".

I would really REALLY hate it if they had it like Import Tuner challange's online mode. It was basically, wait for a rival on a menu screen, then choose from point to point where you'd race, or have a classic SP battle. There was so much room for improvement, but then again you can say that for any game.

Anyway...

I'd want the online played like SP in a way, but no EA sillyness where it's always online. I'd say like PD/GT do it, where you can make a public or private lobby which spans the whole chosen highway. Eg: Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, etc. (Hopefully they make the Tokyo to Osaka Wangan route so they can be merged, but with Nagoya seperate, maybe even the mountain roads. I'll stop now, overhyping like the TXR fanboy I am.) Then before opening the lobby, lobby settings, like battle settings (SP or TA or both?) and hopefully PA to track is seamless and you can see cars while in PA. (Maybe like TDU2?! :dopey: I'm overhyping. Again.) Then it can play out as online features, teams, or you can be a wanderer! Maybe create your own symbol & status and write your own info? That'd be xtremely fun.

As long as that tweet stays pinned on their twitter account, I'll remain a believer too. The only things that'll completely kill my hype is if it turns into F2P, a mobile game, or if it has mandatory online when it's not even an mmo. And also if turns out to be a pachinko. Don't do it Genki!

Ahhh,Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift,My favorites from PS2
I have all these original,i also have the 2 Dreamcast ones original but they are buried in the closet and i am not swimming in there lol.

...nice stacking.

I always liked how the "Zero One" cover looked opposed to the TXR3 cover did.

I noticed genki tweeting alot about txr and dreamcast. The machine translations leave a lot to the imagination. So I don't know what they're saying.

we can play txr 1 txr 2 in pc with reicast window build . ill download from link from youtube.. its run perfect.. not sure is that what genki means...

Just make the online lobbies like the PAs from that Tokyo Drift game. You can scroll through the different players in the lobby and it shows what car they're currently in. Each person in the lobby takes up a parking space, and the lobby is full when all the spaces are filled.

You know I wish they would talk more about the reboot. Although they've been talking a lot about the older TXR games, I wish they could share some details about the game. At the moment, all we know about is that they're rebooting the series and they're aiming to release the new TXR game sometime this year and possibly *unconfirmed I think* going to be a mix between the traditional shutoku battle games and C1 GP.

Also, Genki mention something about an outage on their website. Don't remember what this is all about which also explains why Genki hasn't been posting anything for about a week on their Twitter page but if I remember, Genki said they will be back on the 21st. I don't know why but this outage sounds suspicious to me for some reason. It kinda sounds like they're preparing for a teaser for the reboot as a surprise.

Don't get your hopes up though.

Strangely enough, I saw a copy of Import Tuner Challenge a few days ago for the Xbox 360. I didn't know what it was, would have bought it, but eh, I don't have an Xbox at all. Now I know it's part of the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series :dunce:

This game sounds pretty cool and I hope there will be a reboot soon. 👍

Where did you hear that from? I stalk their twitter like a hawk and all I've gleaned is that they are playing txr in their office and they seem surprised that anyone remembers the game and wants more.

Unfortunately it's not the best entry in the series and the car list is really limited.

I don't agree. It was a generational leap. They had to generate all new HD assets for it and thus coudln't have as much as they had in the past. If they had made a followup to that one it would have been awesome. I loved the cockpit view in that game possibly the best cockpit view in any racing game ive played.

After a week or two vacation, Genki finally decided to post something on their official Twitter page. Expecting a teaser for the next TXR game? Nope just more tweets.

Now just wait a minute, this doesn't look like anything related to Tokyo Xtreme Racer right? Well I have a theory about this one which could indicate on what the next Tokyo Xtreme Racer game could be. You see, we had a Tokyo Xtreme Racer game that focused on circuit racing called C1 Grand Prix. Here if you look at this random magazine Genki posted, you can see the words LJ Grand Prix written on it. This may be a coincidence or not but seeing that Genki made C1 Grand Prix and then seeing Genki posting this magazine which mentions the words Grand Prix makes me wonder. Could it be true the new TXR game is going to be another C1 Grand Prix? Maybe titled LJ Grand Prix? Or is this something about some race car driver in Japan.

I don't have any further explanation for this unfortunately. Share me your thoughts about what you think about this tweet.

It was a generational leap in the most literal way. However, not in terms of content and gameplay. it was an extremely lacking and watered down version of what was already available, all the while not really changing much but the graphics. That is not a leap in any way. It was extremely disappointing, and I would have rather saved my money had I known.

Thats what happens. The reality of game development is asset generation is a huge part of the process of and very expensive and time consuming. That game had fully modeled engine bays for all of its cars showing each step of the upgrades. If anything I argue it was a huge game and a very good achievement by genki. The only failing I see was that they stopped making racing games after that and wangan midnight. Though I can't blame them if they just weren't making enough money from it anymore.

The engine modelling (for all cars) was nice, but at the same time, there wasn't many cars.. So really not that great of an achievement, when you think about it.
For me, 'Import tuner' felt like half a game, at best. It was probably down to a short development window, I think it was rushed for the launch of the Xbox 360. The main reason I bought my 360 was for Import tuner, and I was quite disappointed by it. Thank goodness that TDU came out not longer after i'd bought it.

Yeah but like gran turismo 3 was half of what gt2 was. Generational leap. Genki isn't a huge team like Polyphony is either.
