I think the Tahoe is the best looking outta the bunch of 900's so far, but the Pick-ups and the Avalanche/EXT pictures will be released in January at the NAIAS if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I like the Tahoe the best, too.

The escalade has CTS-itis, being WAY too tall and strange looking. looks like the designers made a 16:9 car for a 4:3 reality.

Cartoony is what GM's shootin for I guess, I mean look at the Cobalt and HHR they both look cartoony

BlazinXtreme
The side vents are friggen sweet though.
I like those as well. But, I wish they would have lined those and the door handles up though. Either lower the vents a tad, or raise up the door handles a little. If they were all in a flowing line down the side of the car, that would look real nice. Oh well.

I do really like the look of this. And actually, I like it a bit more than the Yukon. I'm really digging the interior. That screen is like 9" wide, thats nice. Might have to look at that thing when they start showing. I'm not real hot on the Denali yet, so we'll see what version looks better in person. We have decided to get one, just not sure which version.

Hilg

Damn, I just noticed it will have a 400hp 6.3 litre V8 stock.....Thats pretty damn cool. Imagine if they made a V series escalade...

They will more then likely make a V-Series based off the newer SS that are coming off. I wouldn't be surprised with a 8.0L+ V8 engine in em either.

And its 6.2L but meh close enough

2007 Cadillac Escalade Unwrapped At South Florida Auto Show
Source:www.mph-online.com

DETROIT — Cadillac unveiled the 2007 Escalade, the next generation of the iconic luxury SUV. The all-new Escalade establishes a new level of refinement and style, delivered with an instantly recognizable form that introduces the next step in Cadillac's ongoing renaissance.

Based on General Motors' all-new full-size SUV platform, the '07 Escalade features new powertrain, chassis, safety and interior systems. These integrated systems deliver the most powerful and most efficient luxury SUV in the segment, led by a new 6.2L all-aluminum V-8 engine with variable valve timing technology delivering 403 horsepower (300 kw)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm).*

"The 2007 Escalade represents the next phase of Cadillac's product renaissance — a renaissance that was launched by the previous-generation Escalade," said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. "Since its inception, Escalade has been an icon — the vehicle discerning customers aspire to own. The '07 model raises the bar with exceptional exterior style, interior refinement, increased performance and enhanced ride and handling smoothness."

Cadillac Escalade will be available in the first quarter of 2006, with extended-wheelbase Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT models to be introduced later in the year. The Escalade family is one of the most aspirational nameplates in the industry and attracts the youngest customers in Cadillac's portfolio of automobiles.

Cadillac Escalade will also be sold outside North America , thus strengthening Cadillac's global portfolio.

Distinctive design

Escalade has a sleeker, cleaner and more athletic form with improved aerodynamics while appearing smaller in stature. It is instantly identifiable and incorporates styling cues from the landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a more detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents.

"One look and there's no doubt it's an Escalade," says Taylor . "The '07 Escalade introduces the future of Cadillac design, which matches leading edge forms and styling with superior craftsmanship and attention to detail."

Details in elements such as wraparound fascias, styled mirrors and integrated running boards enhance Escalade's flowing design and bolster the feeling of refinement. All major sheetmetal and body components are new and feature crisp, taut lines. The sleek, toned look includes a faster windshield angle of 57 degrees, which flows gracefully into the roofline. This also improves aerodynamic performance to a segment-best 0.363 coefficient of drag, which helps improve fuel economy and reduce wind noise.

The bold Escalade front-end design features a Sixteen-inspired egg crate grille with detailed chrome elements and a prominent wreath-and-crest insignia. The grille is flanked by tri-element headlamps that use High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting technology, with available IntelliBeam automatic headlamp beam control. The sides of the vehicle look fresh and clean with new doors, a single-piece window surround and seven layers of chrome accents. Rear-end styling also is distinct and is highlighted by LED taillamps, LED-lit center high-mount stop light (CHMSL), chrome accents and an integrated trailer hitch cover.

Larger standard and available wheels, including standard 18-inch wheels and available chrome 22-inch wheels, are tailored to fit the wheel openings. This precise wheel-to-body relationship — enabled by a wider track — gives Escalade a more athletic presence and lowered stance.

Refined, spacious interior

All-new interior styling is a cornerstone of the new Escalade. The flowing, luxurious interior is complemented with premium materials and a distinct layout not shared with any other GM full-size SUV. The cabin also is more spacious, with an instrument panel that is lower and moved forward in the vehicle. This warm and inviting interior comes in two colors: Ebony and Cashmere .

Escalade's exclusive interior includes a unique instrument panel, instrumentation gauges with white needles and blue light inlays with continuously lit, white-LED backlighting, Nuance leather-covered seats, leather-covered door trim and center console, fabric-covered interior pillars and an available heated steering wheel.

The two-tone Cocoa-on-Cashmere appearance gives Escalade the aura of a roomy luxury sedan. The upscale styling is complemented by new, softer and low-gloss materials for the instrument panel and other trim pieces. The harmonious color and grain of the materials were carefully selected to provide a premium feel as well as durability. Flush-mounted controls and radios, with almost imperceptible gaps, convey precision and integration.

Attention to detail is evident throughout the vehicle. There is no visible hardware to greet occupants when the doors are opened and there are no exposed fasteners or hardware on the pillars, seats or seat tracks. The seats have "close-outs" that surround the seat bottoms and seat tracks, creating a more finished appearance. Fasteners and hardware are also covered when the seats are folded.

When it comes to convenience and capability, Escalade delivers with a new industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat feature that eases access to the third-row seat, as well as a power-assisted rear liftgate that opens and closes with the touch of a button. The remote starting feature is standard and is integrated with the tri-zone automatic climate control system, allowing the interior to be heated or cooled when the vehicle is remotely started.

An enhanced array of audio, infotainment and safety options also includes an available 8-inch touch-screen navigation system, as well as a DVD system with large 8-inch flip-down screen. A segment-first Bose 5.1 Digital Surround Sound system is integrated into the new family of radios that play DVD audio, DVD video, CD audio, CD videos, MP3s and XM Satellite Radio.

The new Escalade is more spacious. More fore/aft front seat travel provides the segment's leading legroom for front-seat passengers. Second-row seat legroom and knee room, and third-row seat headroom are increased over the previous models. The second- and third-row seats also have more shoulder room — a feat accomplished while also offering standard roof-mounted head curtain side air bags. Cargo room has increased by 4.2 cubic feet (118.9 liters) behind the second-row seats and 2.3 cubic feet (65.1 liters) behind the third row. The third-row seats fold flat and are easily tumbled forward or removed for maximum cargo area. Also, the unique, two-compartment center console is the segment's largest. The glove box offers 25 percent more storage space than previous models and features damped opening operation that reinforces Escalade's overall feeling of refinement.

Driving experience

With a reputation as one of the segment's top performers, the '07 Escalade builds on its heritage with a combination of performance, responsiveness and comfort that channels the vehicle-wide refinements into an effortless driving experience.

A new 6.2L V-8 rated at 403 horsepower (300 kw)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm)* is exclusive to Escalade. This all-aluminum engine uses v ariable valve timing (VVT) to optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The introduction of variable valve timing through the unique, dual-equal cam phaser is the industry's first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 overhead-valve engine. The unique dual-equal phaser adjusts the camshaft timing at the same rate for both the intake and exhaust valves. Aluminum cylinder heads and an aluminum engine block offer reduced mass, an attribute that supports improved vehicle weight distribution and improved fuel economy.

A new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is matched with the 6.2L engine. One of the industry's most advanced automatics, the 6L80 features clutch-to-clutch shifting and has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio — including two overdrive gears — that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. The 6L80's six forward gears have smaller "steps" between them, compared to a conventional four-speed automatic, which bolsters both performance and the feeling of smoothness. Shorter steps between the gears help the transmission quickly find the best gear for the vehicle speed and road conditions, with less back-and-forth hunting on grades — a trait that is particularly helpful when towing. Also, the 6L80 has Driver Shift Control (tap up/tap down) capability that allows the driver to manually select upshifts and downshifts with a button on the column shifter.

A stronger frame and chassis supports the more powerful powertrain and enables the Escalade's exceptional responsiveness and ride and handling smoothness. A new, fully boxed frame offers 49 percent increased torsional stiffness and a 35-percent improvement in beaming frequency, compared to previous models. In addition, all front and rear suspension attachment points are stiffened for improved suspension performance and reduced road input into the vehicle. The frame supports wider front and rear tracks — approximately 3 inches (76.2 mm) wider in front and 1 inch (25.4 mm) wider in the rear — that enhance stability and driving confidence through a more secure road feel and a lower center of gravity.

The front suspension consists of an all-new coil-over-shock design that delivers linear, solid and unwavering ride and handling characteristics on all road surfaces. Also new is a rack-and-pinion steering system that provides precise and responsive control and superior on-center feel. A highly refined five-link rear suspension complements the front suspension for great road isolation and vehicle handling.

Larger, four-wheel disc brakes and an all-new ABS system from Bosch help ensure braking performance. Larger vented front and rear brake rotors, 50-percent stiffer dual-piston calipers, longer-life brake pads and the new system's design result in enhanced pedal feel, reduced brake noise, predictable, linear brake response and shorter braking distances. A new Bosch 8.0 next-generation four-channel ABS system is also standard. The ABS system works with the standard StabiliTrak stability control system's new rollover mitigation technology. This software algorithm technology uses sensors to proactively predict vehicle "tip-up" and apply appropriate brake force to help prevent such events.

Enhanced driving control and ride smoothness are offered with the standard Road Sensing System, which uses electronically controlled shock absorbers to make nearly instantaneous damping adjustments. The system "reads" the road and anticipates the best damping rates.

Safety and security

The '07 Escalade is designed to be among the industry's safest and most secure vehicles, with numerous safety systems and crash-avoidance technologies. New occupant protection features include head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows and an industry-first 360-degree front safety belt pretensioner activation system.

The roof-mounted head curtain air bag tethers hold the bags in place longer for increased rollover protection and occupant containment. Sensors located at the front and rear of the vehicle, as well as the side doors, provide increased and more immediate crash detection. The exclusive rear pretensioner sensors can trigger the front seat pretensioners during a rear-end collision, holding the occupants firmly in place and helping to prevent whiplash injuries.

The myriad of crash sensors are complemented by crash-avoidance systems such as standard StabiliTrak with rollover mitigation. The electronically controlled system continuously measures the side angle of the vehicle and, if a rollover appears imminent, it can deploy the side curtain air bags before the crash occurs. The 360 degrees of detection capability allows the electronically controlled safety systems to deploy in a greater variety of situations.

Crash avoidance is bolstered through enhanced driver control dynamics such as wider front and rear tracks, as well as a more responsive suspension — including a new coil-over-shock front suspension design and new rack-and-pinion steering. The Escalade is built on a stronger and stiffer, fully-boxed frame that is designed for improved crash energy management.

The front frame section, for example, has improved crush dynamics that provide the equivalent of 17.7 inches (450 mm) of additional crush space — in a vehicle that is only approximately 3 inches (76.2 mm) longer than its predecessor. The frame also is designed for improved vehicle-to-vehicle height compatibility in the event of a frontal impact with a smaller vehicle.

Additional safety and security features include:

• Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology
• Standard dual-stage driver and front passenger frontal air bags
• Automatic Occupant Sensing System turns off front passenger air bag if a small occupant is detected in the seat
• Standard roof-mounted head curtain side air bags for all seating rows
• Standard front safety belt pretensioners with activation sensors in the front, sides and rear of the vehicle
• 5-star frontal impact ratings anticipated
• Standard tire pressure monitoring system
• Standard rain-sensing wiper system
• Standard heated washer fluid system
• Standard Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist that can detect certain stationary objects in the rearward path of the vehicle and send a visual and audible warning
• Standard perimeter lighting
• Standard ABS
• Standard Road Sensing Suspension
• Available rearview camera system that can visually detect people or objects in the rearward path of the vehicle
• Standard pull-up/push-down power windows

Escalade comes with the Generation 6 OnStar system (with a one-year Directions and Connections service plan). The system includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to emergency services to potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the OnStar system automatically notifies an OnStar Advisor, who will check on the occupants and summon emergency help if necessary. OnStar also can assist authorities in locating a vehicle if it is reported stolen (ability to locate stolen vehicles varies with conditions).

*Preliminary, pending certification. A new voluntary power and torque certification procedure developed by the SAE Engine Test Code committee was approved March 31, 2005 . This procedure (J2723) ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque by allowing manufacturers to certify their engines through third-party witness testing. GM was the first auto manufacturer to begin using the procedure and expects to use it for all newly rated engines in the future.

2007 CADILLAC ESCALADE DESIGN: ICONIC DISTINCTION
Source: www.gminsidenews.com

Cadillac Escalade’s distinctive design is the cornerstone of Cadillac’s renaissance and an icon of luxury SUVs . The all-new 2007 model marks the next step in Cadillac’s expressive design language, with sleeker, detailed and more refined styling – an enhanced yet instantly recognizable form that cannot be mistaken for anything but Escalade.

The ’07 Escalade design is influenced by the Sixteen concept vehicle, including a more finely detailed egg crate grille with chrome details and prominent front fender vent ports. Escalade also has bold, tri-element High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and LED taillamps. These traits contribute to a tailored and capable presence that is augmented by a wider track and standard 18-inch wheels. (Segment-largest 22-inch factory-installed wheels are available.) Escalade has a broad-shouldered, tailored appearance. The wheels are pushed to the corners, with the body-to-tire distance carefully tuned for optimized appearance and performance.

Escalade’s design also is cleaner and more refined. New, wraparound front and rear fascias provide a tighter, almost seamless look. The overall effect is a leaner profile that suggests a trimmer vehicle, despite an approximately 3-inch (76.2 mm) increase in overall length. A more steeply raked, 57-degree windshield contributes to a segment-best 0.363 coefficient of drag, proving that Escalade not only looks sleeker, it is sleeker. The more aerodynamic profile helps improve fuel economy and reduce wind noise, as do narrowed gaps between panels and tighter, flusher mounting of the exterior components, such as the grille, headlamps and trim.

Numerous standard and available features complement Escalade’s new design, including new-design flat-blade windshield wipers and styled wiper arms (RainSense automatic windshield wipers and heated windshield washer fluid are standard), standard front tow hooks, an available power-assisted rear liftgate, in-glass AM/FM radio antenna, available factory-installed articulating running boards (available mid-year) and a larger available sunroof.

Escalade is available in seven exterior colors: Blue Chip, Gold Mist, Black Raven, Quicksilver, Radiant Bronze, Red E and White Diamond.

Design details

A proudly sized wreath-and-crest emblem is at the center of Escalade’s signature egg crate grille. The grille surface is predominantly chrome, with painted elements that add texture and visual depth. It is inset with compartmentalized groups of jewel-like vents and a detailed chrome-trim liner that has a textured screen with bright edges and black sides. The overall look is more detailed, enhancing Escalade’s luxury aura.

Escalade’s new, larger tri-element HID headlamps further the vertical-design theme established by the previous-generation models, but are more prominent and feature three distinct elements; IntelliBeam automatic low/high beam control is available. The headlamps’ interior parabolas are highly reflective and contribute to the jeweled look when viewed through the crystal-clear lenses. The Cadillac logo is etched into the bulb shields, which contain new HID lighting elements.

Escalade’s distinct exterior form includes doors that are not shared with any other GM full-size SUV and front fenders with new vent port design cues inspired by the Sixteen concept vehicle. The vents, located at the top-rear corner of the fenders, deliver a detailed appearance, with three sections set off by a chrome top bar and chrome surround trim. The vents add visual distinction to the Escalade lineup and are sure to become signature hallmarks, like the vertical headlamps and prominent wreath-and-crest grille emblem.

New wraparound front and rear fascias create a seamless appearance that flows into Escalade’s fenders and doors. The lower portion of the front fascia incorporates recessed, integrated tow hooks, owing to the Escalade’s primary mission as a capable full-size SUV. In true Escalade fashion, the tow hook openings make a stylish design statement.

As with the front end, Escalade has a new, wraparound rear fascia that blends seamlessly into the vehicle’s profile. The license plate holder is integrated into the liftgate and a prominent wreath-and-crest emblem is mounted above it. The fascia also incorporates sensors for the standard Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist feature, as well as the standard trailer hitch platform. The platform is covered to maintain Escalade’s tailored appearance, but is easily removable.

Escalade’s vertical lighting theme also is carried to the rear of the vehicle, with two arrays of elegant LED-lit taillamps. The lamps feature indirect optics and numerous sources of illumination per unit, which provides a broader, more even lighting display and eliminates the “pinpoints of light” normally associated with LEDs.

As part of its bold, powerful appearance, Escalade offers optional 22-inch wheels and tires – the largest factory-installed wheels in the full-size segment. All Escalade models – including those equipped with the standard 18-inch wheels and tires – feature a unique seven-spoke wheel design.

Stylish craftsmanship

Escalade’s one-piece, body-color front fascia wraps around into the front wheel openings, creating an integrated, more refined appearance. The fascia covers the front bumper beam, eliminating the conventional look of a bumper separated from other body components. This more seamless design is one of the many details that helps improve aerodynamics and reduce wind noise. Hood-to-fender gaps are reduced, as are the headlamp-to-fender gaps.

At the rear of the vehicle, gaps are reduced around the liftgate and fascia top, creating a refined and precise appearance. The liftgate-to-quarter panel and liftgate-to-taillamp tolerances have also been reduced with a new, one-piece door ring, or “D-ring.” The D-ring provides an extremely strong, dimensionally accurate foundation for details like the taillamp mounting holes. The quarter panels, underbody and roof all are welded to the D-ring in the upper body structure, which enables the precise fit and enhances the tight structure of the vehicles.

From the side, all models have a more integrated appearance, with t he increased windshield angle helping to create a smoother transition to the roofline. The streamlined look is accented with smoother, lower-profile roof racks. Doors extend down and wrap over the rockers for a cleaner, “one-piece” appearance and improved bodyside integration. The rearview mirrors are styled for improved aerodynamics and reduced wind noise. New, refined grab-style door handles are designed to stand off from the edge of the vehicle for easier actuation. The door handles have a chrome appearance. Door closing is effortless and quiet, sealing with a reassuring sound that conveys Escalade’s solidity and craftsmanship.

Standard running boards are integrated with the exterior design themes, and optional power articulating running boards (available later in the model year) automatically extend when the doors are opened. When not in use, the boards retract inward, giving the vehicle a sleeker, more refined appearance.

Aerodynamic enablers

Improved aerodynamics complement Escalade’s refined exterior elements and help enhance driving quietness. Contributors to the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency include:

* Front air dam – Stylish and carefully integrated to wrap into the leading edge of the tires. Compared to previous models, it is lower and wider.
* Tighter tolerances – New fascia designs, headlamp and grille mounting, and trim mounting attention to detail improve or eliminate gaps and improve tolerances compared to previous models, reducing drag.
* Improved sealing – Airflow into the grille is more efficient with improved front-end sealing, which almost eliminates air leak paths that can create drag.
* Streamlined components – Exterior components such as the rearview mirrors, running boards and roof rack are aerodynamically tuned for reduced drag and noise. The high-mounted stop lamp (also known as the CHMSL) also is aerodynamically tuned, located in a housing that extends nearly the entire width of the roof – Escalade’s unique LED-lit CHMSL is the most aerodynamic among all of GM’s full-size SUVs.

Numerous body sealing features also are designed to reduce wind noise – including newly designed door-to-body seals. The primary door seal has a sculpted shape with multiple internal chambers in the material that condense to provide a tighter fit when the door is closed. An auxiliary door seal, which runs from the lower A-pillar to the top of the door frame and around the second-row door opening, has a combination of soft and stiff rubber material to prevent movement during driving. This helps maintain a constant seal, virtually eliminating the sound of wind noise as the vehicle speed increases.

Also, there are almost no exposed metal hardware components or latches, as all models feature enclosing “close-outs” around the seat bottoms and door sill trim plates.

Class-leading comfort

Escalade comes standard with Nuance leather-covered seating for all seating rows. A new, European-style low-profile front-row seat design, with firmer foam cushioning and more aggressive bolsters, enhances comfort. Door pillar-mounted first- and second-row three-point safety belts facilitate the slimmer designs (second-row, center position uses an SUV-typical belt-to-seat design) and ease entry/egress.

Escalade also offers standard heated first- and second-row seats, as well as available cooled front seats that feature perforated leather designed to enhance airflow. The front seats with cooling feature are part of the available Climate Package that also includes a heated steering wheel feature and remote vehicle starting. Escalade comes standard with a leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant steering wheel-mounted audio controls, as well as an auxiliary control for the heated steering wheel (when equipped). The steering wheel has an upscale appearance a features a prominent wreath-and-crest insignia.

The front-row seats have one-inch more fore/aft travel. Second-row seats provide 0.4-inch (10 mm) more leg and knee room. Their seatback angle is adjusted an additional two degrees rearward for extra comfort. A more comfortable driving position is enabled by the standard adjustable pedals. First- and second-row outboard seats offer increased shoulder room – a packaging feat achieved while also accommodating the standard roof-mounted head curtain side air bag system.

The industry-exclusive power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat allows easy access to the third-row seat. With the push of an overhead console button or a rear-door pillar button, the seat unlatches, sending it into its folded and tumbled position. The third-row seats also have more headroom than previous models and offer improved outward visibility.

Ergonomic controls

The standard six-gauge analog cluster provides easy-to-read displays for fuel, temp, oil, volt/battery, odometer and speedometer. A new, dual-row Driver Information Center display has expanded alerts. All controls are ergonomically placed within easy driver reach. Autotrac transfer case, light switch and radio and HVAC controls have a rotary design for a harmonious look and feel. The center stack provides all-new audio and HVAC controls, including one-touch button control of rear-occupant temperature settings.

Eleven steering wheel-mounted controls contribute to hands-on-the-wheel, eyes-on-the-road driving safety. An additional control switch activates the heated steering wheel feature (when equipped). An overhead console conveniently locates switch controls for the optional sunroof, power liftgate, second-row remote seat release feature and the universal garage door opener.

Tri-zone climate control system

Tri-zone automatic climate control is standard. It offers simplified rear A/C settings and provides quieter operation, more effective cooling/air distribution for rear passengers and improved side-window defogging/defrosting. The system allows up to a 30-degree F difference between driver and front passenger settings, along with a separate setting for rear passengers. The HVAC control module controls the electric rear window defogger and Automatic Climate Preconditioning (provided with the new remote vehicle starting system). The automatic system provides six speed settings in manual mode, plus seemingly unlimited automatic mode adjustments.

New family of radios

Escalade introduces a new family of premium radios and sound systems, including premium Bose sound. All radios are compatible with the standard Generation 6 OnStar system and capable of XM Satellite Radio reception. All units provide a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices, such as an iPod or remote cassette player. The input allows for plug-and-play through the sound system.

The standard system is AM/FM radio with six-disc in-dash CD changer, MP3 and DVD capability, along with a Bose premium, 10-speaker Digital Surround Sound system. A navigation radio with touch-screen controls is available. The navigation radio includes a 6.5-inch LCD screen, integral DVD slot for the map disc and a separate CD slot for music – a separate navigation radio is required with the Rear Seat Entertainment option. The navigation system instantly maps routes with two-dimension or three-dimension full-color map views. The system supports an off-road mode for uncharted roads and provides a low fuel pop-up, which automatically begins to map out the nearest gas station(s) when the vehicle’s low-fuel warning indicator comes on. The navigation screen also doubles as the monitor for the available rear camera system.

Rear seat audio is standard and provides new features for more flexible entertainment, including allowing second-row passengers to plug in headphones, adjust audio volume and listen to a variation of the same type of audio source as the front-seat occupant or an entirely separate source. The system interfaces with the available Rear Entertainment System (RSE). The RSE system provides one remote and two infrared headphones.

Enhanced rear-seat entertainment system

The available DVD-based Rear Seat Entertainment system provides a flip-down, color screen for second- and third-row passenger viewing. The system includes an 8.0-inch Wide-Screen LCD with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio/screen format. To provide more parental control and ease of use, DVD discs are loaded into the Dual Play radio located in the instrument panel. This eliminates the need to reach behind the front seat to load or remove a DVD.

The infotainment system supports the DVD system so audio can be heard throughout the entire speaker system, through wireless headphones or through rear speakers only. All RSE controls, except a parental override control, are in the rear to prevent driver distraction. The parental override control can mute speakers or stop all audio/visual activity.

New, spacious console and glove box

In the front seat area, the new center console offers the segment’s largest storage bin, at more than 20 liters (0.7 cu. ft.). Escalade features a dual-opening console lid, with a soft, leather-like cover. A wood trim appliqué adds distinction and matches the Northern engraving wood trim found elsewhere in the interior. The wood trim runs through the center of the console, providing a sense of compartmentalization.

The Escalade’s console opens with a chrome, spring-damped release button that fosters the vehicle’s refined nature. Multilevel storage within the console includes a smaller, contained space for delicate items like sunglasses. Releasing the second lid opens up the console’s large storage compartment. Additional premium features include separate front compartments, including one with a 12-volt power source. At the rear of the Escalade’s console are two, chrome-ringed cup holders for second-row passengers.

Also, Escalade’s glove box provides 25 percent more storage capacity than before – 5 liters of volume in total.

Increased cargo capacity

Escalade offers 4.2 cubic feet (118.9 liters) of increased cargo room behind the second-row seats and 2.3 cubic feet (65.1 liters) more behind the third row. This gives the vehicles a cargo capacity of 108.9 cubic feet (3,084 liters), when the second-row seat is folded and tumbled forward and the third-row seat is removed. There also is 60.3 cubic feet (1,707.7 liters) of cargo space with the second-row seat in place and the third-row seats removed. There is 16.9 cubic feet (478.6 liters) of cargo space behind the third-row seats.

The significant increase in cargo capacity is achieved despite vehicle length growing by only about 3 inches (76.2 mm). Engineers created the additional room by streamlining the cargo area with relocated and flush-mounted air conditioning ducts and slimmer liftgate trim.

Power fold-and-tumble second-row seat

An industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat is available and allows for easier third-row entry and egress. The feature remotely unlatches the seat to send it into its forward-folded and tumbled position. This greatly eases access to the third seating row, while also easing the burden of parent holding a child – there is no need to fumble with both hands to release and fold the seat forward.

The power fold-and-tumble feature operates with the press of a button from the first-row overhead console or door pillar. The button activates a release mechanism on the seat latch, allowing the seat to fold forward into the tumbled position. (The seat must be returned to the original seating position by hand.)

Larger sunroof

Escalade offers a new, larger (36.1 inches wide by 24.6 inches long) power sliding sunroof. The new sunroof is wider than previous models. It has new express open/close and auto close features, as well as a hard composite wind deflector that reduces wind noise and interior buffeting.

2007 CADILLAC ESCALADE PERFORMANCE: ENHANCED POWER, SUPERIOR REFINEMENT
Source: www.gminsidenews.com

Under the hood and on the road, the 2007 Cadillac Escalade delivers refinement and outstanding performance from an integrated combination of new powertrain, chassis and suspension systems. The powertrain is more powerful and incorporates new technology to increase efficiency and reduce emissions, while delivering 403 horsepower (301 kw).*

Escalade’s new chassis is stiffer and more robust than the model it replaces, which contributes to a heightened feel of solidity, smoothness and craftsmanship. Moreover, a new rack-and-pinion steering system and coil-over-shock suspension design enable a lively and responsive driving experience – a combination that contributes to a “drive smaller, live bigger” ethic. The more robust chassis allowed engineers to tune the suspension to deliver a ride that feels as good as the standard 18-inch wheels and available, segment-largest 22-inch chromed wheels look.

All-aluminum 6.2L V-8 engine

The ’07 Escalade is powered by a new, 6.2L all-aluminum small-block V-8 with variable valve timing technology (VVT). VVT optimizes camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The 6.2L engine is rated at 403 horsepower (301 kw)* at 5700 rpm and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm)* at 4400 rpm; it is teamed with a new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control (tap up/tap down).

Escalade’s new engine represents the fourth generation of the small-block V-8 design that went into production in 1955, but has its roots in a Cadillac-developed valve-in-head V-8 introduced in 1949 – an engine that, when introduced, was lighter and more powerful than the one it replaced and established the blueprint for modern V-8 and V-6 engines for decades to come. The 2007 Gen IV V-8 engine represents the next step in technology, performance and efficiency. Highlights include:

* Aluminum heads
* Aluminum block
* Variable valve timing (VVT)
* Revised cylinder block design
* Electronic throttle control
* 58X ignition system
* New, more powerful E38 32-bit controller
* Enhanced quietness and smoothness
* Returnless fuel system

Gen IV Vortec engines are designed to provide improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, compared to previous-generation small-block V-8s. Compared to truck engines of a decade ago, the Gen IV Vortec engine family is approximately 90 percent cleaner. Cast iron exhaust manifolds matched with dual close-coupled catalytic converters help reduce cold-start emissions, the largest source of vehicle emissions.

Escalade’s 6.2L engine features a new aluminum block and cylinder heads. The use of an aluminum cylinder block offers reduced mass, an attribute that supports improved vehicle weight distribution and slightly improved fuel economy. The block is virtually identical to iron versions of the small-block family, including a deep skirt design that incorporates cross-bolted main bearing caps and a structural oil pan. It also features crankcase “windows” – vents that help improve bay-to-bay breathing – which reduce pumping losses and support the high horsepower output of the high-performance engine.

Variable valve timing (VVT) helps optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The introduction of variable valve timing through the unique dual-equal cam phaser is the industry’s first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 overhead valve engine. The unique dual-equal phaser adjusts the camshaft timing at the same rate for both the intake and exhaust valves.

New aluminum cylinder heads also contribute to Escalade’s enhanced power output. The heads are based on the racing-derived cylinder heads of the Corvette Z06’s LS7 7.0L engine, including a unique inlet port shape and offset rocker arm design. Airflow of the heads is supported by large, 55-mm-diameter intake valves and 40.4-mm-diameter exhaust valves.

Escalade’s 6.2L engine is engineered for smoothness and quietness, which contributes to the vehicle’s refinement. Engine quieting features include:

* Special friction-reducing coating on piston skirts
* Full floating piston pins
* Damping patch on the oil pan
* Timing chain tensioner
* Quieter alternator
* Acoustically tuned engine cover

Stronger engine cradles and mounting systems help reduce vibrations transmitted through the chassis that would otherwise be felt by passengers.

New 6L80 six-speed automatic

GM’s new, Hydra-Matic 6L80 electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control (tap up/tap down) is matched with the Escalade’s 6.2L engine. As one of the industry’s most advanced automatic transmissions, the 6L80’s wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears – allows for shorter steps between gears. This enables a steep, 4.02:1 first gear, which provides a very strong launch feel. The two overdrive gears include a 0.85:1 ratio in fifth gear and a 0.67:1 ratio in sixth. With two overdrive gears, engine rpm is reduced by approximately 9 percent at 60 mph, to approximately 1500 rpm. Lower engine rpm can bolster fuel economy because less fuel is used. A lower-rpm cruising speed also enhances smoothness and reduces noise heard in the vehicle’s cabin.

Further technical sophistication is exemplified by clutch-to-clutch operation that reduces complexity and packaging. It also enhances the performance feel of the transmission, as shifts feel more immediate and precise. Clutch-to-clutch operation is achieved with three planetary gears, two stationary clutches and three rotating clutches. It is a simple, less complex design that enables the six-speed transmission to be packaged in a size not much larger than a four-speed automatic. Only the first-to-second upshift is a freewheeling action, where the second gear clutch engages while the first gear one-way clutch spins freely. This allows a greater degree of smoothness at lower vehicle speeds.

A new, 32-bit electro-hydraulic control module optimizes transmission performance according to a variety of vehicle inputs, while also enabling features including tow/haul mode, auto grade braking and tap-shift manual range selection. The controller is located entirely within the transmission, which shields the controller from outside elements.

Tow/haul mode is a driver-selectable feature that provides optimal shift characteristics specific for towing or hauling a heavy load. The feature is complemented by manual range selection, which allows the driver to block out upper gears and select desired gears for unique driving conditions, such as towing on a steep grade. The manual range selection feature increases the feeling of control by holding the gear pre-selected by the driver. Electronic safeguards prevent the transmission from being shifted in a manner that could cause engine damage or loss of vehicle control. Auto grade braking is available when the tow/haul mode is selected and the transmission is not in the range selection mode.

Robust chassis system

Escalade’s chassis and suspension systems have been redesigned and serve as the foundation for the vehicle’s refined ride and handling characteristics. It rides on a 116-inch (2946 mm) wheelbase and features a fully boxed perimeter-type frame, which provides an extremely solid foundation that contributes to sedan-like smoothness.

The hydroformed frame has three distinct sections, or “bays,” with specific strength and support characteristics. These bays allowed engineers to maximize each section without compromising other areas. Chassis stiffness is greatly enhanced throughout the frame, as well as providing enhanced performance during a crash. Torsional stiffness (front-to-back) was increased 49 percent and beaming frequency was increased 35 percent compared with the previous model.

The 2007 Escalade also has wider front and rear tracks. The front track is 68.2 inches (1731.8 mm) vs. 65 inches (1651 mm). The rear track is 67 inches (1701.8 mm) vs. 65.98 inches (1675.8 mm). The wider track enhances smoothness and promotes overall vehicle stability, which the driver and passenger can feel through more solid, composed and linear ride and handling characteristics, as well as flatter, more controlled cornering.

New coil-over-shock front suspension

A new coil-over-shock front suspension is used on all models. The coil-over-shock configuration offers smoother, more precise handling characteristics and reduces vibration and harshness, especially with Escalade’s larger wheel-and-tire combinations. An enhanced five-link rear suspension is used on all models. It features a more robust rear axle design that offers increased payload capacity. Both the front and rear suspensions use new, stiffer frame mounts and variable-rate springs.

Escalade’s electronically controlled Road Sensing System suspension is standard. It is a real-time damping system that provides an extremely refined ride with greatly reduced body motion. The system consists of a semi-active, two-position damping control system that responds in real time to road and driving conditions, based on body and wheel motion sensors. There are also steering, engine torque, brake and speed sensors. Each corner features independent damping control. The suspension is an air-lift/auto-leveling system that includes air bags located in the shocks. An integrated air pump automatically adds air to raise and level the vehicle’s ride height when carrying passengers or a heavy payload. Conversely, air is bled from the shocks when the payload is removed, returning the vehicle to a level ride height.

New rack-and-pinion steering system

A new hydraulic power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system provides precise steering response with optimized on-center steering feel. Steering ratios have been optimized for easy maneuverability in tight parking situations. Noise and vibration have been substantially reduced.

Enhanced four-wheel disc brake system

A larger-capacity, four-wheel disc brake system with a new tie rod-type application and new four-channel ABS system are designed to provide Escalade with superior stopping capability and the segment’s best braking feel. ABS is standard on all models, along with an all-speed traction control system.

New and improved elements of the brake system include larger-diameter front and rear disc rotors and new, stiffer brake calipers. The front rotors measure 13 inches in diameter (330.2 mm), an increase of 1 inch (25.4 mm) – approximately 15 percent larger than the previous-generation design. The front rotors are also thicker with large cooling vents, providing enhanced performance and durability. The cast iron, dual-piston front brake calipers are 50 percent stiffer than before, which reduces the tendency for flexing during hard or prolonged braking. The stiffer calipers, along with dual pistons, contribute to a more direct and stronger brake pedal feel.

Rear brakes feature standard vented discs that measure 13.5 inches (342.9 mm), an increase of 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) – approximately 7.5 percent – over the previous-generation system. Both the front and rear brakes use new, non-asbestos brake pad linings that can deliver up to 40,000 miles of performance during normal use.

A next-generation Bosch 8.0 ABS system is standard. It has more precise valve control that requires less cycling of fluid from the brake master cylinder, resulting in reduced noise and enhanced braking feel when ABS is activated during a braking event. The new ABS system also is less complex and has reduced mass when compared with the previous system.

Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control with new rollover mitigation

GM’s sophisticated StabiliTrak electronic stability control system is standard. Partnered with the new brake system and four-channel, four-sensor electronic brake controls, the system provides more precise, controlled ABS stops, as well as enhanced traction/yaw stability. The StabiliTrak system in the ’07 Escalade has added software algorithms for rollover mitigation. The software algorithms use StabiliTrak sensors to proactively predict vehicle “tip up” on a flat road surface, and apply brake force to the outside front and rear wheels in order to reduce lateral force in the vehicle. This brake force intervention can help reduce the likelihood of a rollover in certain circumstances – including “fish hook” maneuvers that involve sudden and rapid back-and-forth steering.

StabiliTrak uses brake control to precisely control the speed of each wheel and manage torque across the front and rear axles. When the vehicle is on a slippery surface, the traction system increases torque to the rear wheel that has the most traction.

The vehicle brake system provides the torque-biasing to enhance traction, and engine management is used, as required, to assist in controlling traction and yaw stability.

Larger wheels and tires

Escalade comes with 18-inch standard wheels and tires; 18-inch chrome wheels and segment-largest 22-inch chromed wheels are available. Some wheel-and-tire combinations are equipped with new P-metric tires that have a nylon cap ply that enhances strength and durability. All wheels have a distinctive, Cadillac-specific seven-spoke design.

They will more then likely make a V-Series based off the newer SS that are coming off. I wouldn't be surprised with a 8.0L+ V8 engine in em either.

And its 6.2L but meh close enough

Weren't they workin' on a production version of the 7.5L V12 from the Cien for awhile? I think there were even some GMT-800 mules running that thing. If they did an Escalade V and put that lump in it, it'd eat a Range Rover Sport's lunch and probably give Cayenne Turbo and ML63 owners something to think about.

These are the first pictures exposing the new front-end styling of the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban.

Based on the new GMT900 platform that's already spawned a new Tahoe, the Suburban is the second of a large family of SUVs and trucks to come from GM in the next two years. General Motors is speeding up the introduction of all of the GMT900 vehicles - including the upcoming Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade, and more - and we expect to see a major product introduction at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January, with many of the 2007 GMT900 SUVs on sale as early as January.

The new Suburban may go on sale as early as mid-spring of 2006.

First Tahoe's being seen on Michigan Roads

Last weekend while at the Purdue vs. Michigan State football game, my buddy noticed a 2007 Tahoe passing by us in the parking lot. We were really surprised to see one since production hasn't even started. We watched to see where it parked so we could check it out on the walk up to the stadium. When we got to it, we realized that it was a test vehicle because it had a sticker on the windshield that said said exactly that. Plus, it had Michigan plates. Fortunately, I had a camera with me but it was only a cheap disposable camera. The pictures didn't turn out as good as I would have liked, but it's better than nothing.

I thought it looked really good in person. The interior is night and day compared to the current Tahoe/Suburban. We did notice that the gap around the hood was kind of wide on the drivers side, but we're guessing it will be better on the production models.

I've actaully seen a couple 07 Tahoes, 1 07 Yukon and 1 07 Escalade on the roads around me. They are all high up GM people, and I know the one at the football game is a executive because one of them (I can't remember which one) graduated from Purdue.

Popular GM trucks set to roll off line earlier
Source: www.freep.com

General Motors Corp. has moved up production of its Silverado and GMC Sierra by 13 weeks in an effort to get the hot-selling vehicles to market quicker and increase cash flow.

GM officials said Wednesday that production of the trucks would be moved up to October 2006 and go on sale the following month as 2007 model-year vehicles.

Production of the full-size trucks originally was scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2007, with the vehicles to go on sale as 2008 model-year trucks.

"We learned enough when we pulled production of the SUVs ahead to accelerate the launch of the pickups by 13 weeks to October 2006," Gary White, vehicle line executive for GM's full-size trucks, said Wednesday.

GM announced in March that it would move ahead, by more than a month, production on new versions of several large SUVs. The new Chevrolet Tahoe is expected to hit showrooms in January, followed by the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon. Other new SUVs will follow in the second quarter.

White said pushing the pickup launch forward would allow GM to sell "tens of thousands of units" of the new trucks in the 2006 calendar year.

The announcement wasn't a complete surprise to Michael Robinet, managing director of CSM Worldwide Inc., an automotive consulting firm in Farmington Hills.

"We've known about this for a long time," he said.

Nevertheless, the decision speaks to the troubled automaker's need to stem the financial bleeding.

The world's largest automaker has lost $4.8 billion in North America so far this year, and retail sales have fallen more than expected since employee pricing discounts were stopped in the fall. Also, GM continues to feel the heat of falling market share and the encroaching presence of Toyota Motor Co.

How GM Will Introduce The 07 Tahoe + MPG Figures
Source: www.wjs.com

DETROIT, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevrolet will continuing its tradition of revolutionary product launches when GM's largest division joins over 750,000 (estimated) New Year's Eve revelers in Times Square to usher in 2006. Chevrolet will take advantage of the world's largest stage with an unprecedented Times Square takeover to launch the all new 2007 Chevy Tahoe.

The all new Tahoe will play a starring role in the Times Square festivities when a pair of matching Tahoes will be elevated above the crowd by custom 20' tall hydraulic scissor lifts. Accompanied by special lighting effects and flanking the One Times Square building and the official ball drop, the Tahoes will rise to punctuate the performance of special musical guest Mary J. Blige, who will perform on Chevy's 20' by 30' custom stage in the heart of Times Square.

"What's bigger than New Year's Eve, Times Square and the Chevy Tahoe?" said Ed Peper, Chevrolet General Manager. "Since 2001, Chevy Tahoe has been America's best-selling full-size SUV. The 2007 model deserves a dramatic entrance and delivering superstar Mary J. Blige to the Chevy stage in Times Square on New Year's Eve in the all new Tahoe is the perfect introduction."

The musical performance by Mary J. Blige will be broadcast live on "NBC's New Year's Eve With Carson Daly, Presented by Chevrolet," which airs at 11:30 p.m. EST. Blige, whose seventh studio album titled "Breakthrough" debuts on December 20, will perform two songs live from the Chevy stage.

"New Year's Eve has played a key role in Chevrolet's marketing strategy since we launched the 'An American Revolution' campaign on December 31, 2003," said Kim Kosak, Chevrolet general director of advertising and promotions. "NBC's New Year's Eve broadcast has been a collaborative effort with Chevrolet and we are thrilled to present the entire show live from Times Square with special performances by superstar Mary J. Blige live from the Chevy Stage. This is a terrific opportunity to emotionally connect with millions of viewers during one of the biggest nights of the year."

Additional Chevrolet New Year's promotions and marketing activities include:

* Chevy messaging on major outdoor Times Square properties including the ABC Studio Supersign and Reuters Jumbotron and the ball drop video monitors

* Chevy's iconic gold bowtie emblem will adorn the podium on the Mayor's stage, where Mayor Bloomberg will push the button that drops the Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year's Ball

* Chevrolet will blanket Times Square with timed gold confetti and provide revelers with commemorative wearables, including Chevy New Year's Eve jester hats and headbands

In addition to Chevrolet's featured presence in Times Square, New Year's Eve will also mark the launch of a new Chevy brand advertising campaign. A new television spot under the "An American Revolution" banner titled "Hand Off" will break during New Year's Eve broadcasts. In the spot, a mysterious black box is handed off from driver to driver in a variety of Chevy cars and trucks filmed against a backdrop of New York City settings like the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park. The surprise ending reveals the all new Chevy Tahoe and makes the connection between Chevrolet and New Year's Eve. The spot is particularly noteworthy because the final scene will be customized for other Chevrolet-sponsored media broadcast events throughout the year, including the Olympics.

"An American Revolution" was the platform for Chevy's unprecedented launch of ten all new cars in trucks in a 20-month timeframe including the Cobalt, HHR and all new Impala. And 2006 will be the "Year of the Truck" as Chevrolet gears up for the launch of a completely refreshed truck line. The all new Suburban, Avalanche and Silverado will join Tahoe as the "Revolution" races on in 2006.

The 2007 Chevy Tahoe has been engineered to deliver a smoother, quieter ride, more responsive handling and a more refined interior. The Vortec 5300 V8 engine with Active Fuel Management technology helps balance 320 horsepower with unsurpassed fuel economy (16 city/22 highway) and allows for seamless transition from eight cylinders to four and back again to give Tahoe drivers the power they expect.

GM to see improved revenue in 2006: CEO
Source: www.biz.yahoo.com

STERLING HEIGHTS, Michigan (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - News) should see improved revenue in 2006, driven by its new line of full-sized sport utility vehicles and trucks, Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said on Thursday.

"We are going to have a nice start to the year as we build and ship the new Chevy Tahoe, and that should help on the revenue side," Wagoner said, speaking on the sidelines of GM's holiday party in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

Wagoner declined to say when the automaker might return to profitability, but said he was optimistic about the soon to be launched GMT-900 series - a line of redesigned SUVs with better fuel-efficiency.

The GMT-900 series, hailed by analysts as critical to the future of GM, includes Chevy Suburbans, Tahoes and GMC Yukons. Some analysts have called the line the "make-or-break" series for the automaker.

The world's largest automaker has lost nearly $4 billion this year as it struggles with high labor and commodities costs, loss of U.S. market share to foreign rivals and slumping sales of its SUVs - longtime cash generators for the auto giant.

A recent easing of gasoline prices has done little to reverse a shift in U.S. consumer sentiment away from fuel-thirsty SUVs and pickups.

Wagoner said the recent slump in SUV sales was due, in part, to market demand, but mainly because GM had cut back on inventory to ready itself for the new models to be launched next year.

As part of a broader restructuring plan the company plans to slash 30,000 jobs and close 12 facilities in North America. GM has also negotiated a deal with its union that would save it $1 billion in annual healthcare costs.

"We worked very hard on the healthcare deal but ... it will be a while before it affects the bottom line ... and that is somewhat frustrating," Wagoner said.

Speaking about the production line-up for next year, Wagoner said he expected "launch vehicles" -- products that are 18 months or less old -- to become a larger part of the product mix in the next two years, reflecting a higher turnover of vehicles.

HYBRIDS

GM, which made its first hybrid power pickup trucks available in 2005, plans to launch its first hybrid sedan -- the Saturn Vue -- next year. The hybrid will compete with popular rivals such as the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid.

Wagoner said he did not know how many hybrids the automaker will make, because of the uncertainty of the size of the hybrid market. But he would like the company to have the capacity to ramp up production, he said.

"We need to get the price value equation right. We have to get the reliability right and the consumer needs to have enough time in it to see they are getting the benefit," he said.

Hybrids account for less than 1 percent of total U.S. vehicle sales, but demand is growing rapidly. Hybrid registrations in the United States were up 81 percent in 2004 to 83,153, according to automotive research firm R.L. Polk.

Toyota Motor Corp. (Tokyo:7203.T - News), which many analysts say will overtake GM as the world's largest automaker soon, is the biggest hybrid manufacturer with a 64 percent market share in 2004, according to research firm J.D. Power.

Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (Tokyo:7267.T - News) is the second-largest hybrid manufacturer with 31 percent of the market in 2004, according to the same data.

GM plans to launch a third hybrid system in partnership with DaimlerChrysler AG (XETRA:DCXGN.DE - News) in 2007.

GM: 07 Tahoe - 16mpg City, 22mpg Highway
Source www.wsj.com

The marketing campaign for the new version of the Chevy Tahoe will kick off on New Year's Eve during NBC's New Year's Eve with Carson Daly. Hip-hop star Mary J. Blige will sing while two Tahoes dangle above her on a stage in New York's Times Square. For Times Square revelers, Chevy hats and headbands will be distributed.

Television ads will also begin New Year's Eve boast that the Tahoe gets the best mileage in its class. On New Year's Day, newspapers in 29 markets will be distributed in Chevy Tahoe-branded plastic bags that include the slogan, "New Year. New Tahoe."

The 2007 Tahoe is the first of several SUVs with better fuel efficiency that GM plans to launch next year with new versions of the Chevy Suburban, Chevy Avalanche, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade also set to arrive. In the second half of 2006, GM will unveil new versions of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks.

GM is hoping the launches and ad campaign can help reverse a steep slide in large-SUV sales, one of the company's most important profit engines. GM's overall November sales dropped by 7.6% compared with the same period last year and sales of SUVs and trucks fell by 13.5%.

Sales of the Chevy Tahoe alone dropped by almost 20% in November to 7,850 vehicles compared with the same period last year, while those of the comparable-sized Avalanche fell by more than 31%. Sales of the larger Chevy Suburban dropped 43.6%. After years of double-digit growth, GM expects the market for large SUVs to remain flat in 2006 at about 780,000 units.

After a loss of $1.63 billion in the third quarter, GM decided to speed up the production schedule for its 2007 SUV launches. As a result, the vehicles will come out five weeks ahead of the original timetable.

Asian car makers, particularly Toyota Motor and Honda Motor, have long held an edge on the fuel-economy front, partly because of the greater dependence of GM and Ford Motor on SUVs for a larger portion of their overall sales. Now with the arrival of more fuel-efficient SUV models, GM says it wants to get the "facts on the table" and take a jab at its competitors, particularly Toyota.

The new Tahoe will get 16 miles a gallon in the city and 22 miles on the highway, GM says.

WSJ: GM Will "Call Out" Toyota In 07 Tahoe Ads
Partial free quote from www.wsj.com

"What's surprising in light of all this is that GM executives, starting with Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner, sounded cautiously upbeat about the coming year during conversations at a holiday reception last Thursday.

Mr. Wagoner was careful not to make predictions of returning to profitability. But he and other GM executives sketched out a scenario in which things get a lot better than they were in 2005. For starters, GM isn't planning to repeat the crash effort to cut a glut of overstocked vehicles, which GM executives say forced the company to cut production by some 250,000 vehicles -- representing a roughly $6 billion hit to revenue.

Second, GM executives expect that during the first part of 2006, they'll be building and shipping a lot of their new, large SUVS, such as the re-engineered and restyled Escalade and Chevy Tahoe. That should be a lot better for the bottom line than slashing production.

Third, North American marketing chief Mark LaNeve says he's ready to go on the offensive in the large-SUV market, with ads that will call out Toyota for selling a large SUV with worse gas mileage than the new Tahoe. Overall, Mr. LaNeve said he's determined in 2006 to stick to his strategy of promoting GM's much-improved vehicles and boosting the images of GM's brands instead of succumbing again to corporate-wide giveaway programs."

Details On 07 Tahoe From Automotive News
Source www.autonews.com

PHOENIX -- General Motors says the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe gets better fuel economy than its predecessor and feels more like a car to drive. But the Tahoe still is what it is: a large truck.

The redesigned Tahoe is longer (by 5 inches), wider and heavier than the vehicle it replaces.

"Nobody is asking for a bigger truck, but everybody is asking for more room," Gary White, GM vehicle line executive for trucks, said at a press event here.

Based on the GMT900 platform, the new Tahoe will arrive at dealerships in January. It is one of several new large SUVs and pickups GM is counting on heavily in 2006.

The basics: GM executives tout the Tahoe's ability to eke out another mile per gallon compared with the current version. On the other hand, they say large SUV sales are driven more by customer needs than a desire for better mileage.

The 2007 two-wheel-drive Tahoe gets 16 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. That's up from 15 in the city and 20 on the highway for the outgoing model.

For the four-wheel-drive model, GM claims 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, compared with 15 mpg/19 mpg for the 2006.

Displacement on demand

The better mileage comes from GM's displacement on demand cylinder deactivation system, which shuts down pistons when not needed. The technology is standard on GM's Gen IV small-block V-8 engine.

Meanwhile, GM lowered the Tahoe's center of gravity and widened the axles to make the vehicle handle more like a car. On top of that, the vehicle's brakes have lost their mushy feel.

Notable features: Chevrolet tilted the windshield from 50 to 57 degrees to add interior space and increase driver visibility under stoplights. Also, drivers can now adjust the seat 3 inches closer to the instrument panel or move an extra inch backward for more legroom. The center bin between front seats has been doubled in size. It has 20.1 liters of space -- enough to store a laptop computer or an oversized purse.

The rear gate opens and closes at the touch of a button. Third-row seats have a hand grip so they can be carried like a suitcase after removal.

What GM says: "Our steering is more precise," says White. "The new Tahoe is like you are driving a smaller, more nimble vehicle."

SUV anonymity

Compromises and shortcomings: The 2007 Tahoe still looks like a Tahoe; it's not a complete styling overhaul. Add a little road dust and the 2007 Tahoe disappears completely into SUV anonymity. Heads generally do not turn at the stoplight on this one. The driver gets more legroom at the expense of second-row passengers.

Nuts and bolts: Production of the 2007 Tahoe started last week at GM's Arlington, Texas, plant. Pricing has not been set.

The skinny: Big SUV lovers should still feel like king of the road. The added carlike driving qualities won't lull Tahoe drivers into thinking it is something less than a full-sized SUV.

The question is: Can GM sell these vehicles without big rebates even as it offers generous incentives on older products? GM CEO Rick Wagoner says GM will continue to discount vehicles nearing the end of their life cycle.

“We’ve positioned some prices down, others we haven’t as much,” Wagoner said in a Dec. 8 interview with Automotive News. “It is much easier, when you have a new product, to (offer) a compelling price. That’s the time when you like to talk about product anyway, as opposed to the deal.”

Early next year, dealers will get a redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade ESV. Later in the year, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickups hit showrooms. Saturn also will get several new vehicles.

Value pricing means a lower sticker price on certain base models that is close to the actual transaction price. The transaction price is the average price paid for the vehicle.

GM markets the idea under the tag line Total Value Promise.

Value-priced vehicles carry little or no rebates. Last summer, GM cut sticker prices on 2006 models by an average of $301, or 1.1 percent, from final 2005 model year prices.

Some GM dealers say value pricing has not had a chance to lure Internet shoppers who compare prices online. That’s because GM keeps running big incentive programs that interrupt the automaker’s Total Value Promise marketing campaign, says Lynn Thompson, co-owner of Thompson Pontiac-GMC-Cadillac-Saab in Springfield, Mo.

“Value pricing is a six-month to a yearlong thing,” he says. “It will put GM back on people’s shopping list, but that takes awhile. It won’t just drive people in overnight.”

Value pricing hasn’t had much time to work, given that GM introduced the idea in the late spring, then went into a four-month national incentive program called “Employee Discount for Everyone.” When that ended on Sept. 30, GM let value pricing ride for October. But October sales plunged 25.9 percent from the October 2004 level.

In response, GM initiated its Red Tag sale. Under the sale, which runs from mid-November to Jan. 3, customers can buy virtually any 2005 or 2006 Buick, Pontiac, GMC or Chevrolet product for $100 over the price a supplier would pay -- generally $100 to $200 below invoice. The promotion does not include the Pontiac Solstice, Chevrolet Corvette or Buick Lucerne.

Still, Wagoner says, GM’s value pricing has successfully spurred sales for several new products this year.

“It’s not the reason the Pontiac Solstice has been a screaming success, but I think it’s part of it -- the fact that you can get a car like that for $19,995,” Wagoner said. “I think that was part of the gee-whiz of it.”

He says the Hummer H3 SUV, the Chevrolet Impala sedan and the Cadillac DTS sedan are other examples of value-priced vehicles. The H3 is a new product, while the DTS is a re-engineered, restyled successor to the DeVille. Hummer has sold 27,205 H3s and Cadillac has sold 18,061 DTSs through November.
