TCC Reviews Tahoe
Source www.thecarconnection.com

There's a lot riding on the '07 Tahoe-much more than just a new body and revised chassis.

GM badly needs for its popular full-size SUV (and its shared platform stablemates, the new '07 Caddy Escalade, GMC Yukon and the long-wheelbase Suburban) to hold the line against the burgeoning onslaught of large SUVs from Nissan (Armada) and Toyota (the coming '07 Tundra/Sequoia), some of which have already made significant incursions into territory that used to be the exclusive domain of U.S. automakers. GM can't afford to lose any more market share - most especially here, in the one area where it is still a dominant player. The Chevrolet Tahoe has been the best-selling large SUV since 2001 and alone accounts for 26 percent of the segment.

And so a lot of Deep Thought went into the '07 Tahoe - everything from objective things like performance/capability/driving dynamics and features/equipment (including an available Autoride active damping suspension, power flip and fold second row seats, 20-inch rims, and a DVD navigation system) to things much harder to pin down, subjective things like the feelings and thoughts it evokes when you first look at it.

Instead of me-tooing the Tonka machismo exemplified by the Nissan Armada and the new Jeep Commander, Chevy stylists gave the new Tahoe the look of confident authority. This is still a very large vehicle - and yet, not overpoweringly so. The wife won't fear it, but your buds will still be into it. It's a nicer, subtler counterpoint to the Armada and others that may be getting a bit over-the-top for some buyers.

You'll notice things like no more colored plastic body cladding. Even base LT Tahoes now get very attractive body-colored bumpers that are themselves snugged tighter to the fenders (just a couple millimeters of gap between the panels) than ever before. And you'll notice a wider stance, as the track of both the front and rear wheels is significantly wider than the outgoing Tahoe's, by three inches up front and one inch at the rear).

More than an illusion
It looks more planted and stable than the old model, and this impression is not just an illusion. The handling of the '07 Tahoe sets a new high-water mark for full-size SUVs. Credit the suspension here: all '07s get coil-over shocks riding in aluminum lower control arms (which reduce unsprung mass by 20 percent), a new rack-and-pinion power steering system that delivers easy turn-in and superb road feel, even at high speeds, and a revised five-link rear suspension along with a totally new boxed frame with 90-percent better torsional stiffness in the front section. It's one of the most un-trucky rides I have ever driven that still has very trucky toughness where it matters, including an even tougher hydroformed and fully boxed bolt-on steel frame.

Inside, there's an interior you simply will not believe until you open the door and see for yourself. If this truck is an indicator of GM's commitment to clawing its way back to the top, then it's time to load up on GM stock while it's cheap. It's stunning. It has the look and feel of an expensive high-end import, from the shape and materials used to create the elegant dash array to the aluminum door sill trim plates to the deliberate slightly concave sculpting of all the panels, including the driver and passenger seat backs, to give the occupants just that extra smidgen of room. Engineers even configured the seat tracks so that no matter how far up or back you slide them, there is no exposed hardware to ugly up the interior. Ditto the superbly designed second-row flip-and-fold seats - just touch a button and they roll up and out of the way to provide easy access to the third row. And you can still get buckets or bench seats for all rows, take your pick. The third-row seats can be folded flat, and the front seats can be almost fully reclined for side-of-the-road snoozing.

[http://forum.thecarconnection.com/] The use of new body structures, "quiet steel" laminates, revised door seals, and trick technology such the use of expanding acoustical foam to fill up internal body spaces as well as extensive wind-tunnel shaping (including seemingly minor things like getting rid of the lip on the fuel filler door and the elimination of the mast antenna) cut wind and road noise down substantially. Chevy engineers claim the '07 Tahoe is more slippery in term of its aerodynamic profile than a C4 Corvette. But you'll need to try one out at 75 mph to fully appreciate how far SUV design refinement has come.
Big guns
It's a great body, and the "guns" are definitely there, too. The Tahoe's engine lineup includes a revised 320-hp version of Chevy's 5.3 liter V-8 with standard cylinder deactivation technology that provides better fuel economy than a V-6-powered, mid-size Ford Explorer, Chevy claims, and almost 8000 pounds of towing capability on 4WD models. The Tahoe's new engine one-ups the former class-leading Armada (at 305 hp) on standard power and kicks its tail at the pump too, with a segment-best combined city/highway fuel efficiency rating of more than 21 mpg. (A smaller 4.8-liter V-8 will be available later in the calendar year and will become the standard engine in 2WD Tahoes.) The 5.3-liter V-8 is can be ordered with "flex fuel" E85 (ethanol) capability, too. Buyers can choose either a standard 3.73 axle or an optional 4.10 ratio for more low-end grunt.

The previous LS, LT, and LTZ trim lines will continue, with the off-road Z-71 package appearing later in the year. But features never before offered in a Tahoe make this truck a contender in almost any segment it feels like competing in. They include in-dash satellite navigation; real-time damping suspension; rain-sensing wipers; first- and second-row heated seats (and heated windshield washer fluid, too); power-articulating running boards; rearview camera; Ultrasonic Park Assist; and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Standard safety features now include stability control, and front, side impact, and curtain airbags with rollover-mitigation technology.

I have not been as impressed with a new GM vehicle in 15-plus years of covering the industry and test-driving new cars. This new Tahoe is a magnificent SUV. And with Chevy's initial quality and customer satisfaction scores on an upward trend (Chevy has actually beatenToyota here lately) there is nowhere to go but up. Here's to hoping GM has more of this kind of engineering and styling commitment in the works.

Pricing for the new Tahoe, which will be available in January, had not been revealed at the time of this writing. However, base MSRPs should fall close to the current 2006 Tahoe 2WD LS's MSRP of $34,115, with the price of a loaded 4WD LTZ somewhere in the mid-low $40,000 range.

07 Suburban
Source: www.gminsidenews.com

LOS ANGELES – Chevrolet announced the 2007 Chevy Suburban, the next generation of the industry’s most capable full-size SUV. The all-new Suburban is capable of hauling more passengers and cargo than any other vehicle in the segment – and a 360-degree safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technology that demonstrates GM’s commitment to providing world-class safety.

The ‘07 Suburban is based on GM’s new, full-size SUV architecture, which features sleek exterior styling, a sharper, more precise driving feel, more power with improved, segment-leading fuel economy, increased interior refinement and improved quietness. Suburban rides on a 130-inch (3,302 mm) wheelbase, which supports generous passenger and cargo capability, while enabling a smooth ride.

“Suburban is the industry benchmark when it comes to capability and the 2007 model affirms the reputation established in 1935, when the first Suburban was introduced,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “Suburban continues to meet the needs of consumers by delivering its combination of cargo, passenger and towing capabilities safely and efficiently.”

The 2007 Suburban is available in the second quarter of 2006. It is offered in LS, LT and LTZ models, with 2WD and 4WD (a Z71 off-road package will be offered later in the model year), as well as 1500 and heavy-duty 2500 series. At the start of production, Suburban 1500 models will come with an efficient 5.3L V-8 with Active Fuel Management™ displacement on demand fuel-saving technology. Later, a new, all-aluminum 6.0L V-8 with Active Fuel Management displacement on demand and variable valve timing (VVT) will be available. A 6.0L engine with VVT and an iron cylinder block is offered on 2500 models.

Suburban also offers a host of new and enhanced safety features, including available head curtain side air bags and standard StabiliTrak stability control system with new rollover mitigation technology.

“Suburban has a long history of safety innovation,” said Peper. “The ’07 model elevates Suburban’s safety reputation with one of the most comprehensive and cohesive systems of standard and available features – all wrapped in a stronger structure that provides comforting assurance.”

Superior safety

The ’07 Suburban offers security in the form of a 360-degree perimeter safety system of occupant protection and crash avoidance technologies. New features include roof-mounted head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows and front-seat safety belt pretensioners that are linked to the vehicle's sensing system to provide segment-exclusive deployment in rear-end crashes. These features are integrated into a stronger vehicle structure that is also designed for improved compatibility with other vehicles. The roof-mounted head curtain air bags include design features that provide increased rollover protection and occupant containment. Sensors located at the front of the vehicle, in the side doors, and within the occupant compartment provide increased and more immediate crash detection. The vehicle's sensing system provides segment-exclusive capability to deploy front seat safety belt pretensioners during certain rear-end collisions, enhancing the belt system's ability to hold the occupants firmly in place.

The roof-mounted head curtain side air bag system incorporates one of the segment's first rollover indication sensors, which is located on the vehicle's center tunnel in the occupant compartment. The sensor monitors the vehicle's accelerations and roll rate. If these signals indicate an impending rollover, the roof-mounted head curtain side air bags deploy to provide an extra measure of occupant protection and containment. These rollover-capable head curtain side air bags stay inflated longer than air bags developed only for side impacts because rollover incidents can last longer. The deployment duration and other design features of the rollover-capable air bags combine to provide increased occupant protection and the ability to help keep occupants inside the vehicle.

Crash avoidance is bolstered through enhanced design and driver control dynamics, such as wider front and rear tracks, as well as more responsive suspensions – including a new coil-over-shock front suspension design and new rack-and-pinion steering. The vehicles are built on a stronger and stiffer, fully-boxed frame that contributes to enhanced crash energy management. The front frame section has been designed to optimize crush progression, resulting in improved energy absorption efficiency. The improved crush performance, enabled by hydroformed frame rails and efficient chassis component packaging, also comprehends design provisions for improved vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility in the event of a frontal impact with a smaller vehicle.

Additional safety features include:

* Standard StabiliTrak stability control system with rollover mitigation technology
Standard dual-stage driver's front air bag
* Standard dual-stage outboard-front passenger air bag with Passenger
Sensing System
* Available roof-mounted head curtain side air bags for all three seating rows
* Standard front seat safety belt pretensioners with rear impact
deployment capability
* Standard tire pressure monitoring system
* Available rain-sensing wiper system
* Available Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist that can detect certain stationary objects in the rearward path of the vehicle and send an audible warning sound and display via three LEDs on the right D-pillar
* Available rear-view camera system designed to provide the driver with
a view of people or objects in the rearward path of the vehicle
* Standard pull-up/push-down power window switches

All models come with the Generation 6 OnStar system (with a one-year Safe and Sound service plan). The system includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to emergency services to potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the OnStar system automatically notifies an OnStar Advisor, who will check on the occupants or summon emergency help if necessary. OnStar also can assist authorities in locating a vehicle if it is reported stolen (ability to locate stolen vehicles varies with conditions).

New full-size SUV foundation

Suburban is built on GM’s new full-size SUV platform, which incorporates features such as a new, fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and an all-new, premium interior system that bolster the vehicle’s comfort, quality and capability. Wider front and rear tracks enhance handling and lower the center of gravity for a more confident road feel.

Extensive attention to detail was paid by Suburban’s engineers to ensure a quiet driving experience. It centers on a new, stiffer frame, which reduces vibrations transmitted to the passenger cabin. The strength and accuracy of the fully-boxed frame also enable more precise mounting and tuning of chassis and suspension components, which also help reduce vibration. Even the tires on the large, 17-inch standard and 20-inch available wheels were designed to reduce noise.

Noise-reducing components and materials are used throughout the body structure, including the headliner material, door seals and front-of-dash area. The engines also feature a quiet-tuned alternator and an acoustically tuned engine cover that reduces engine noise heard inside the vehicle. New door seals help reduce seal “pull-away” at highway speeds, which can cause wind noise. Also, a sleeker shape, thanks to improved aerodynamics, streamlined exterior mirrors and roof rack, more steeply raked windshield and tighter body gap tolerances, assures a quiet ride.

Suburban’s quietness and smoothness is complemented by the Autoride suspension system, which is standard on LTZ. This segment-exclusive bi-state, real-time damping system provides an extremely refined ride with greatly reduced body motion. The system consists of a semi-active, two-position damping control system that responds in real time to road and driving conditions, based on body and wheel motion sensors.

Suburban’s quietness and smoothness are complemented by capabilities full-size SUV customers depend on. Suburban 1500 offers up to 8,100 pounds (3,674 kg) of towing capability (2WD models), when properly equipped. Suburban 2500 can tow up to 9,700 pounds (4,400 kg).

Distinctive exterior design

Suburban’s all-new exterior design is leaner and more agile looking, with a more steeply raked windshield and smoother roofline accentuating the exterior length. Suburban wears the new face of Chevrolet, with a large Chevy gold bowtie, centered on a twin-port horizontal grille. The body-colored grille surround is inset with an argent texture mesh. Fog lamps and headlamps feature jewel-like optics. The lower fascia, incorporating the front license plate holder and integrated tow hooks, is aggressively styled with a skid plate look that enhances Suburban’s rugged, off-road appearance.

Suburban’s front end styling reflects its capability. It includes the fast-rake windshield; a bulging power dome hood; a prominent new fender design with integrated wheel flares; a distinctive new grille and headlamps; and a full-wrap fascia. The wraparound fascia, which eliminates the conventional bumper-to-body gap, is one of the numerous attributes that gives the Suburban a more refined look. It also enhances aerodynamics. There also is a new family of 17-inch and 20-inch wheels. Seventeen-inch wheels and tires are standard, with 20-inch factory-installed wheels available. The larger wheels fill Suburban’s wheel houses, giving the vehicle a confident stance.

An available Z71 Off Road package (available in the fourth quarter of 2006) takes this aggressive look to the next level, with larger tow hook openings, larger, more prominent fog lamps and specific grille texture and platinum chrome grille trim. Eighteen-inch wheels and tires also are part of the package.

Suburban is offered in nine exterior colors: Greystone Metallic, Dark Blue Metallic, Sport Red Metallic, Bermuda Blue Metallic, Black, Summit White, Gold Mist Metallic, Antique Bronze Metallic and Silver Birch Metallic.

Refined interior and thoughtful convenience built in

The interior of the ’07 Suburban represents significant new levels of refinement, comfort, quality and convenience. The roomier interior is airy, thanks to a lower instrument panel and deeper windshield that improve outward visibility. Passenger space also is increased, including more shoulder space for rear passengers, which is packaged with the available roof-mounted head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows. Behind the first-row seats, Suburban offers 137.4 cubic feet (3,890.6 liters) of cargo room.

Suburban’s seats are designed to provide more comfort, additional passenger-carrying flexibility, and easier entry/egress. Door pillar-mounted first- and second-row three-point safety belts facilitate the slimmer designs (second-row, center position uses an SUV-typical three-point belt-to-seat design). Seat comfort has been further improved with firmer foams, including more aggressive bolsters. The front-row seats have one-inch more aft travel than previous models. Second-row seats provide 0.4 inch (10 mm) more legroom and knee room. Their seatback angle is adjusted an additional two degrees rearward for extra comfort.

Refinements throughout Suburban’s spacious interior create an environment that exudes quality and precision. A two-tone color scheme is executed with new, softer and low-gloss materials for the instrument panel and other trim pieces. An all-Ebony interior is available.

Additional details include LED backlighting for the instruments and chrome accents on instruments and vents. Flush-mounted accessories and controls, such as the climate control/radio center stack, create a seamless, “single unit” appearance. Also, there are almost no exposed metal hardware or latches, as all models feature enclosing “close outs” around the seat bottoms and door sill trim plates.

Accessibility and capability are enhanced with features that include a unique power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat and a third-row seat that also is easily removable. New comfort features include increased seat travel and seatback angles and an upgraded HVAC system. Storage capability is improved with the segment’s largest center console storage bin, a larger glove box and additional new storage compartments.

Suburban’s interior features include:

* Power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat
* Remote vehicle starting system
* First- and second-row heated seats
* Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist
* Rearview camera system
* Touch-screen navigation system
* Power-articulating running boards (third-quarter ’06 availability)
* DVD rear-seat entertainment system with larger, 8-inch screen and enhanced features.

Suburban also features an impressive new audio/navigation lineup, which provides quality entertainment and information. A new family of CD/MP3-compatible radios leads the audio lineup, with an enhanced DVD entertainment system that includes a larger, 8-inch screen (with in-dash loading). A new touch-screen navigation radio is available and incorporates the view monitor for the available rear-camera system.

Enhanced efficiency

A new Gen IV small-block V-8 family offers more power than comparable powertrains in previous models. Standard at the start of production in Suburban 1500 models is a Vortec 5.3L V-8 with 320 horsepower (238 kw)* and 335 lb.-ft. of torque (463 Nm)*, which offers Active Fuel Management displacement on demand fuel-saving technology. Active Fuel Management displacement on demand technology seamlessly switches between eight- and four-cylinder power to save fuel. Two versions of the Vortec 5.3L Gen IV V-8 – including an aluminum-block version that is standard in 4WD models – are compatible with E85 ethanol-based fuel, an alternative to gasoline. The engines can run on any combination of gasoline and/or E85 fuel.

Coming later in the year for 1500 models is a powerful, new all-aluminum 6.0L V-8 with variable valve timing, as well as Active Fuel Management displacement on demand technology. The engine is rated at 355 horsepower (264 kw)*. VVT helps optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The system is enabled by a unique dual-equal cam phaser – the industry’s first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 cam-in-block engine. The unique dual-equal phaser adjusts the camshaft timing at the same rate for both the intake and exhaust valves. A Hydra-Matic 4L70 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission is paired with the engine.

Heavy-duty Suburban 2500 models offer a 6.0L V-8 with VVT. It features an iron cylinder block and is rated at 350 horsepower (261 kw)* and 360 lb.-ft. of torque (497 Nm). It is matched with a robust Hydra-Matic 4L80 four-speed automatic transmission.

Contributing to Suburban’s more efficient performance are improved aerodynamics. A more steeply raked windshield and smoother roofline improve airflow over the vehicle, while a dditional contributors to efficiency include a lower, wider front air dam, tighter tolerances and gaps between the fascias, lamps and grille openings, and improved front-end sealing that nearly eliminates air leak paths. These features all contribute to enhanced fuel economy and improved driving quietness, compared with previous models.

Source: www.gminsidenews.com

LOS ANGELES – GMC announced the all-new 2007 Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali full-size SUVs today. The line is led by the Yukon XL Denali, with unique styling and features – including a 6.2L V-8 engine that delivers the most horsepower in its class, with variable valve timing and a fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmission.

Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali models deliver more power and better fuel economy than the vehicles they replace, enhancing GMC’s “more than expected” reputation. The vehicles are based on GM’s all-new full-size SUV family, which features distinctive styling, spacious and refined interiors, exceptional driving characteristics and enhanced safety features. They complement the recently introduced 2007 Yukon and Yukon Denali models to round out GMC’s full-size SUV lineup – offering the broadest and most capable lineup of SUVs in GMC’s more than 100 years of building trucks.

“The Yukon XL Denali is the ultimate expression of GMC’s professional grade ethic,” said John Larson, GMC general manager. “With enhanced safety, performance and refinement, the all-new 2007 Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali highlight our commitment to providing customers more than they expect.”

Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali become available in the second quarter of 2006. The XL models have exterior dimensions similar to the regular models, but are about 14 inches (355.6 mm) longer in wheelbase and 20 inches (508 mm) longer in overall length. Yukon XL is available in SLE (cloth trim) and SLT trim (leather appointments), as well as 2WD and 4WD configurations and a heavy-duty model. A third-row seat is standard. A 5.3L V-8 with Active Fuel Management™ displacement on demand fuel-saving technology is standard. Later in the model year, a new 6.0L all-aluminum V-8 with Active Fuel Management and variable valve timing (VVT) becomes available; a 6.0L V-8 with VVT is offered in heavy-duty models.

The distinctive Yukon XL Denali is the flagship of GMC’s family of professional grade vehicles. It has exclusive exterior design and interior features, as well as an exclusive 6.2L all-aluminum small-block V-8 engine with variable valve timing and a new six-speed automatic transmission. The 6.2L engine is rated at 380 horsepower (283 kw)*, the most horsepower in its class.

All-new, sleeker design

Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali have a sleek, taut form. Wraparound front and rear fascias, styled mirrors and integrated running boards provide a seamless, contemporary appearance. Craftsmanship is found in elements such as tight tolerances between exterior components and a tuned, wheels-to-the-corners proportion. The toned look on all models is created with faster windshield angle of 57 degrees, which flows gracefully into the roofline. This improves aerodynamic performance, which bolsters fuel economy and helps reduce wind noise.

Jewel-look lighting elements and doors that extend over the rockers accent the vehicles’ precise and refined design elements. The headlamps are larger, using bright halogen bulbs that deliver improved lighting spread. Rear-end styling also is distinct, with unique treatments above the beltline and around the glass, including taillamps and integrated license plate pockets.

Yukon XL Denali is distinguished with exterior appointments that elevate the exclusivity of its appearance. In addition to its iconic honeycomb chrome grille, the ’07 Yukon XL Denali also features enhanced exterior bright work, unique headlamps, taillamps and rear fascia treatment, as well as unique 18-inch standard polished wheels. Twenty-inch factory-installed chrome wheels are available. Denali-exclusive headlamps and taillamps further the jeweled look of Yukon XL models with detailed lighting elements and clear lenses – with etched GMC logos on the headlamp bezels – that provide a crystalline appearance and distinctive lighting patterns.

GMC Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali offer features such as power retractable running boards (available mid-year) and a power liftgate. Yukon XL models not equipped with the power liftgate feature an easy-to-operate liftgate that is specially designed with a micro-switch that assists the operator by using the mass of the tailgate to almost open or close itself once the liftgate is past the halfway-open position. An ergonomically designed, recessed cup with pull handle makes closing the liftgate an easy, one-handed operation.

Refined, spacious interiors

Yukon XL Interior space is roomier and has a spacious, refined environment, thanks to a premium two-tone color scheme and a lower-positioned instrument panel. New thinner, sculpted seat designs and detailed trim affirm Yukon XL’s craftsmanship, which is bolstered by optional amenities such as heated seats for first- and second-row passengers. Also, the front seats offer more fore/aft and recline travel, and the second-row seats have an increased seatback recline angle for added comfort.

The upscale styling is complemented by new, softer and low-gloss materials for the instrument panel and other trim pieces. The harmonious color and grain of the materials were carefully selected to provide a premium feel as well as durability. Flush-mounted controls and radios, with almost imperceptible gaps, convey precision and integration. Chrome accents are used on instrument surrounds, vents and other trim.

Craftsmanship also is revealed in unexpected areas, such as distinctive sill plates with no visible hardware to greet occupants when the doors are opened, as well as no exposed fasteners or hardware on the pillars, seats or seat tracks. The seats have “close-outs” that surround the seat bottoms and seat tracks, creating a more finished appearance. Fasteners and hardware are covered, too, when the seats are folded.

As with the exterior, Yukon XL Denali is distinguished with exclusive, premium features, including sophisticated Nuance leather seating surfaces, unique center console, enhanced interior bright work and detailed, highly finished embossed sill plates that greet passengers when they open any of the Yukon XL Denali’s doors. The unique center console has wood trim that conceals the lid and cupholder pockets, creating a more finished and refined appearance.

The Yukon XL family also offers a new, industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat feature that eases access to the third-row seat. The power fold-and-tumble second-row seats feature release buttons accessible by the driver or on the interior C-pillar to provide an easy, immediate release of the seat to create an access path to the third-row seat or cargo area.

Tri-Zone climate control is standard on all models. Automatic climate control is standard on Yukon XL Denali and Yukon XL SLT; it is available on Yukon XL SLE. A remote start system, standard on SLT/Denali models and available on SLE, allows the climate system to heat or cool the vehicle’s interior. An enhanced array of audio, infotainment and safety options also is available and includes an available touch-screen navigation system, as well as a DVD system with larger flip-down screen positioned in front of the second-row seats.

There is more space inside the SUVs, as well. More fore/aft front seat travel provides the segment’s leading legroom for front-seat passengers. Second-row seat legroom and knee room, and third-row seat headroom are increased over the previous models. The second- and third-row seats also have more shoulder room – a feat accomplished while also offering available roof-mounted head curtain side air bags. The third-row seats fold flat and are easily tumbled forward or removed for maximum cargo area. Also, the center console storage compartment, at 20.1 liters of capacity, is the segment’s largest. The glove box offers 25 percent more storage space than previous models and features damped opening operation that bolsters quietness and refinement.

Responsive suspension, solid chassis

The ’07 Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali are built on GM’s new full-size SUV platform, which incorporates features such as a new, fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The frame supports wider front and rear tracks – approximately 3 inches (76.2 mm) wider in front and 1 inch (25.4 mm) wider in the rear – that enhance stability and driving confidence through a more secure road feel and a lower center of gravity.

The front suspension consists of an all-new coil-over-shock design that delivers linear, solid and unwavering ride and handling characteristics on all road surfaces. Also new is a rack-and-pinion steering system that provides precise and responsive control and enhanced on-center feel. A highly-refined five-link rear suspension provides superior isolation and ride, with larger, firmer brackets that also contribute to the vehicles’ precise driving manners.

Larger, four-wheel disc brakes and an all-new ABS system ensure braking performance at the top of the segment. Larger vented front and rear brake rotors, 50-percent stiffer dual-piston calipers, longer-life brake pads and a new, robust tie-rod-type apply system contribute to enhanced pedal feel, reduced brake noise, predictable, linear brake response and shorter braking distances. A new, Bosch 8.0 next-generation four-channel ABS system also is standard. The ABS system works with the standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system. In the new SUVs, StabiliTrak incorporates the first-time GM application of rollover mitigation, software algorithm technology that uses sensors to proactively predict vehicle “tip-up” and applies appropriate brake forces to prevent such events.

Enhanced driving control and ride smoothness is offered with the available Autoride real-time damping system (standard on Yukon XL Denali), which uses electronically controlled shock absorbers to make nearly instantaneous damping adjustments. The system “reads” the road and anticipates the best damping rates.

Seventeen-inch wheels are standard on Yukon XL, with 18-inch wheels standard on Yukon XL Denali. Twenty-inch wheels are available on Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali. The wheels are designed with premium-appearance faces, including available chrome or polished finish. Yukon XL Denali wheels are exclusive. New tires are tailored to the vehicles to provide excellent balance of handling, quietness and safety.

New small-block V-8 family

A new Gen IV small-block V-8 family powers the new Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali. Standard at start of production in Yukon XL models is a Vortec 5.3L V-8 with 320 horsepower (238 kw)* and 335 lb.-ft. of torque (463 Nm)*, which offers Active Fuel Management displacement on demand fuel-saving technology. Active Fuel Management displacement on demand technology seamlessly switches between eight- and four-cylinder power to save fuel. Two versions of the Vortec 5.3L Gen IV V-8 – including an aluminum-block version that is standard on 4WD models – are compatible with E85 ethanol-based fuel, an alternative to gasoline. The engines can run on any combination of gasoline and/or E85 fuel.

Coming later in the year for is a powerful, new all-aluminum 6.0L V-8 with variable valve timing, as well as Active Fuel Management displacement on demand technology.

Heavy-duty models offer a 6.0L V-8 with VVT. It features an iron cylinder block and is rated at 350 horsepower (261 kw)* and 360 lb.-ft. of torque (497 Nm). It is matched with a robust Hydra-Matic 4L80 four-speed automatic transmission.

The 6.2L engine of the Yukon XL Denali is all-new, too, with advanced technologies and lightweight materials, including VVT and an aluminum cylinder block, which helps the Yukon XL Denali delivering outstanding performance. The 6.2L engine is rated at 380 horsepower (283 kw)*, the most horsepower in its class, and 415 lb.-ft. of torque (564 Nm)*.

A new 6L80 six-speed is matched with the 6.2L engine. The six-speed automatic has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears – that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. Also, the 6L80 has a “tap up/tap down” capability that allows the driver to manually select upshifts and downshifts with a button on the column shifter.

Safety and security

The ’07 Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali offer security in the form of a 360-degree perimeter safety system of occupant protection and crash avoidance technologies.

The deployment duration and other design features of the rollover capable air bags combine to provide increased occupant protection and the ability to help keep occupants inside the vehicle.

Crash avoidance is bolstered through enhanced design and driver control dynamics, such as wider front and rear tracks, as well as more responsive suspensions - including a new coil-over-shock front suspension design and new rack-and-pinion steering. The vehicles are built on a stronger and stiffer, fully-boxed frame that contributes to enhanced crash energy management. The front frame section has been designed to optimize crush progression resulting in improved energy absorption efficiency. The improved crush performance, enabled by hydroformed frame rails and efficient chassis component packaging, also comprehends design provisions for improved vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility in the event of a frontal impact with a smaller vehicle.

Additional safety features include:

Standard StabiliTrak stability control system with rollover mitigation technology
Standard dual-stage driver's front air bag
Standard dual-stage outboard-front passenger air bag with Passenger
Sensing System
Available roof-mounted head curtain side air bags for all three seating rows (standard on Yukon XL Denali)
Standard front seat safety belt pretensioners with rear-impact
deployment capability
Standard tire pressure monitoring system
Available rain-sensing wiper system (standard on Yukon XL Denali)
Available Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist that can detect certain stationary objects in the rearward path of the vehicle and send an audible warning sound and display via three LEDs on the right D-pillar (standard on Yukon XL Denali)
Available rear-view camera system designed to provide the driver with
a view of people or objects in the rearward path of the vehicle
Standard pull-up/push-down power window switches
Available voice-assisted navigation system.
All Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali models come with the OnStar system (with a one-year Safe and Sound service plan).

Denali details

The ’07 Yukon XL Denali remains instantly identifiable, with its iconic honeycomb chrome grille. Exterior enhancements on the new model also include chrome-accented side molding, roof rack trim and other bright work treatments. Additionally, the headlamps and taillamps are unique and feature a premium, crystalline appearance and distinctive lighting patterns.

Yukon XL Denali delivers a unique combination of interior style and luxury, including standard Nuance leather-covered seating with heated first- and second-row captain’s seats, as well as leather trim throughout – including a Denali-exclusive leather-wrapped steering wheel, which also features real wood accents and a host of auxiliary controls. Yukon XL Denali also is the only model in the Yukon XL family to offer an available heated steering wheel.

Other standard features include power liftgate, power release second-row fold-and-tumble bucket seat, roof-mounted side curtain air bags, power-adjustable pedals, heated windshield washer system, electrochromic (auto-dimming) inside mirror, RainSense automatic windshield wipers, remote start system and Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist. From an entertainment standpoint, Yukon XL Denali comes standard with an AM/FM MP3-capable radio with a six-disc in-dash CD changer, Bose premium nine-speaker sound system and XM Satellite Radio. Eighteen-inch polished aluminum wheels are standard and unique 20-inch factory installed chrome-finish aluminum wheels are available – the wheel designs are not shared with other Yukon XL models.

Like other Yukon XL models, the Yukon XL Denali offers several helpful and convenient options, including a navigation radio system, rear-view camera system, power sunroof, power-retractable assist steps (available mid-year) and a rear-seat, DVD-based entertainment system.

Yukon XL Denali represents the pinnacle of GMC’s range of professional grade vehicles.

While the Suburban and Yukon are built on the same platform, they are two different trucks. The Yukon is more luxery while the Suburban is more just a big SUV, you can get a lot more refinement from a Yukon then a Suburban. But you also get a steaper price tag.

Have you ever been in a Denali? They are extremely luxurious I must say and I really like them, not for the price mind you, but I like them. But the Yukon has a lot more refinements in it then the Suburban. GMC has always been greater then Chevy.

And yes SUV's won't sell as well any more, but if GM didn't have them, they would lost their section of the market.

Yeah... for their definition of luxury but from other manufactures that is their normal lineup of vehicles.

Not really, GM sells there trucks pretty good and will more so now then in past years because of the new lines. The GMT 800's were really out dated and should have been updated back in 03, but the new 900's are amazing and will seel quite well. I almost want to say this will be the saving grace for GM.

A lot of them will be brand loyalist, but I'm going to guess GM will draw others in just based on price, fuel mileage, and power output.

Not if this gets out.

the truth about cars
For those of you who've just joined us from Wall Street, welcome. We’ve been waiting for you for a while-- long enough to wonder if GM’s stock price got lost in hyperspace. I guess you guys needed some kind of sign to find your bearings. Something like Toyota’s announcement that they’re gonna Avis The General in ’06, ending GM’s 70-year run as the world’s largest automaker. Or Rabid Rick Wagoner’s post horse departure barn door closing homily: “I’m not conceding anything to anybody.” No matter. Now that you’re here, let me tell you a story…

I was scanning Wardsauto.com the other day when I came across a “good news” piece: “Crucial GM Fullsize Truck Program Launches Early”. Well, OK, it MIGHT be a good news piece, you know, if The General’s SUV cavalry racks-up the sales GM needs to die another day. Obviously, it’s a bit of a long shot, what with SUV’s being a dead genre guzzling. But hey; it is what it was. Anyway, mid-way through Ms. Priddle’s puff piece, a thought occurred to me: is it really a good idea to rush the GMT900 vehicles (Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade, Suburban, Silverado, Sierra, etc.) to market? What if they’re not ready?

It’s not inconceivable. The Pontiac Solstice was due to hit the forecourts in June, promised for November, still isn’t widely available and already appears on bulletin boards with a laundry list of complaints. Let’s face it: GM has a bit of a history manufacturing, dare I say it, crap. Oh wait; Ward’s says the “new” trucks will use 60% of the old trucks’ components. And according to Gary White, GM’s Fullsize Truck Vehicle Line Executive, the GMT900’s are “entering the world with higher quality than the ones they replace.” Now THERE’S a reassuring thought.

But let’s get to the point. Check the article’s last paragraph: “’No one’s going to ride a 1-trick pony today,’ White says, noting GM could have spent an extra $2 billion for marginal additional improvement to the GMT900 lineup, but recognized the money is better spent elsewhere for a balanced product portfolio.” Now ask yourself a question: what the Hell does THAT mean?

The first part of White’s quote seems straightforward enough. White’s saying his handiwork’s got to be safe, reliable, comfortable, attractive and frugalesque. (By implication, yesterday's "one-trick" SUV's were, um, affordable.) But what’s that second bit about the extra $2b GM DIDN’T spend on “marginal additional improvement”? Is White seriously suggesting that a couple of bil only buys you a bit of soft touch plastic here, a nicer steering wheel there? I’m no bean counter, but I would have thought that 2000 million dollars can do a great deal to improve a vehicle.

I emailed Ms. Priddle to see if White had specified these missing marginalities. (GM stopped returning my calls sometime back in April.) No joy there. It then occurred to me that no matter what White’s mob left out of the GMT900’s, his remarks typify GM’s product mentality. The company’s lineup is stuffed with ¾ vehicles: cars, trucks, SUV’s and minivans that are just about as good as the competition, but not quite. For example, the Pontiac G6 seems a suitable alternative to a Nissan Altima. But if you look closely (as customers do), the G6 isn’t up to snuff on almost every level: interior quality, engine refinement, reliability, etc. Even the class-killing Chevrolet Corvette features some of the nastiest plastic known to mankind. In general, The General signs-off its vehicles when they're still a few furlongs from the finish line.

An Audi engineer once told me that the final millimeter of a materials gap eats up a third of the item’s production budget. Even though an Audi buyer might not see or feel the resulting precision, the automaker makes the effort and pays the freight. That’s just the way they do things. It’s already clear from the GMT900’s 60% parts carry-over (much of which is due to the SOS timetable) and pre-production shots of the vehicles themselves that White’s got it exactly backwards. The huge amount of money GM spent on these vehicles delivered nothing BUT marginal improvements.

White's comments highlighted the trade-off that created the $2b compromise: “marginal improvement” vs. “a balanced product portfolio”. In other words, rather than get one vehicle-- I mean, a host of similar vehicles-- absolutely perfect, GM prefers to build [yet] another product. It’s a shotgun approach in a rifle shot world. By manufacturing a complete range of not quite products across eight brands, GM condemns itself to perpetual mediocrity, and guarantees its also-ran status relative to the tightly focused folks at Toyota. The General’s generals fail to realize that people don’t buy GM’s balanced product portfolio. They buy a single GM product. Or, increasingly, not.

First off there is no source for that, second that's just some guys opinion. I think that's nothing but tripe.

07 Escalade ESV
Source: www.gminsidenews.com

DETROIT – The 2007 Cadillac Escalade ESV, debuting at the North American International Auto Show, is the largest member of the Escalade family. Combining power, size and strength with trademark Cadillac styling and technology, the full-size Escalade ESV has strongly positioned Cadillac in the large luxury SUV market.

The vehicle is 21 inches (53.4 cm) longer than Escalade, and that translates into more premium seating and cargo-carrying capability. It features all the same elements and features as the Escalade, but adds an extra DVD system with large 8-inch flip-down screen for third-row passengers.

Based on General Motors’ all-new full-size SUV platform, the ’07 Escalade ESV features new powertrain, chassis, safety and interior systems. These integrated systems deliver the most powerful full-size SUV in the segment, led by a new 6.2L all-aluminum V-8 engine with variable valve timing technology delivering 403 horsepower (301 kw)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm).*

Cadillac ESV will be available in the summer of 2006. It also will be sold outside North America , thus strengthening Cadillac's global portfolio.

Escalade ESV has a sleeker, cleaner and more athletic form with improved aerodynamics while appearing smaller in stature. It is instantly identifiable and incorporates styling cues from the landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a more detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents.

Details in elements such as wraparound fascias, styled mirrors and integrated running boards enhance Escalade ESV’s flowing design and bolster the refined feeling. All major sheetmetal and body components are new and feature crisp, taut lines. The sleek, toned look includes a faster windshield angle of 57 degrees, which flows gracefully into the roofline. This also improves aerodynamic performance to a segment-best 0.36 coefficient of drag, which helps improve fuel economy and reduce wind noise.

All-new interior styling is a cornerstone of the new Escalade ESV. The warm and inviting interior is complemented with premium materials and a distinct layout. The cabin also is more spacious, with an instrument panel that is lower and moved forward in the vehicle. This interior comes in two colors: Ebony and Cashmere . The vehicle features a unique instrument panel, instrumentation gauges with white needles and blue light inlays with continuously lit, white-LED backlighting, Nuance leather-covered seats, leather-covered door trim and center console, fabric-covered interior pillars, available heated and cooled front seats and heated steering wheel.

Escalade ESV delivers convenience with a new industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat feature that eases access to the third-row seat, and a power-assisted rear liftgate that opens and closes with the touch of a button.

Escalade ESV also includes an available 8-inch touch-screen navigation system, as well as a DVD system with a large 8-inch flip-down screen. A segment-first Bose 5.1 Digital Surround Sound system is integrated into the new family of radios that play DVD audio/video, CD audio/video, MP3s and XM Satellite Radio.

A new 6.2L V-8 rated at 403 horsepower (301 kw)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm)* is exclusive to the Escalade family. This all-aluminum engine uses v ariable valve timing (VVT) to optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The introduction of variable valve timing through the unique, dual-equal cam phaser is the industry’s first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 overhead-valve engine.

A new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is matched with the 6.2L engine. One of the industry’s most advanced automatics, the 6L80 features clutch-to-clutch shifting and has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears – that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy.

A stronger frame and chassis support the more powerful powertrain and enable exceptional responsiveness and ride and handling smoothness. A new, fully boxed frame offers 49-percent increased torsional stiffness and a 35-percent improvement in beaming frequency, compared to previous models.

Larger, four-wheel disc brakes and an all-new Bosch ABS system help ensure braking performance. ABS works with the StabiliTrak stability control system’s new rollover mitigation technology. This software algorithm technology uses sensors to proactively predict vehicle “tip-up” and apply appropriate brake force to help prevent such events.

Escalade ESV is designed to be among the industry’s safest and most secure vehicles, with numerous safety systems and crash-avoidance technologies. New occupant protection features include head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows and an industry-first 360-degree front safety belt pretensioner activation system.

Escalade ESV comes with the Generation 6 OnStar system (with a one-year Directions and Connections service plan). It includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to emergency services to potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the OnStar system automatically notifies an OnStar Advisor, who will check on the occupants and summon emergency help if necessary. So Poverty, from your Fox Hole in Europe youre supposed to magically tell the Americans who buy and drive SUVs what is good and not good about the trucks that you will probably never see in Germany, France, Italy, or Britan?

These trucks have allready been titled the best American SUV available, and is on par or better than those of the European and Japanese SUV models. The fuel mileage in a full size Tahoe is the best in it's class, and interior fit and finish is the exact same as the previous generation Cadillac Escalade.

Sales of SUVs have dropped a bit, sure... But they are still going to be big sellers in states where snow falls, and will continue to be the vehicle of choise for people who have families that number five or more, own boats or other off-road equipment, or have a need for the large size of the vehicle. But the combination of good looks, good fuel economy, and new levels of refinement is enough to not only bring back GM loyalists, but draw other customers away from Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Infiniti, etc. dealers as well.

 A person that buys a mercedes audi or bmw is in a completely different demograph to a person who wants to buy a cheap SUV. Im not trying to tell you guys anything. I just copied and pasted what some guys had to say who have worked for GM and the other 2 big american car manufacturers. Surely they are more knowledgeable than all of us put together when it comes to these things. You just dont seem to want to believe it. The escalade pickup truck does look quite nice and sporty but most of the SUV's I wouldnt say they were good looking but I wouldnt say they were ugly either. The tahoes quite a looker aswell but I wonder what the interiors like? I myself predict that the sales of trucks are going to start sliding and the sales of german executives rise. I think the sales of SUV's will rise a bit longer but in about a decade level off and decline. All the big german companies are planning to onslaught he american market with their various different SUV's so I hope GM has a game plan.

I personally think the tucks kick ass. I went down to Berger today to look at the new Tahoe, and she is a looker. The interior is rather plush, and the fit and finish looks (and feels) to be on par with my benchmark, the Volkswagen Touraeg.

My grandfather allready plans to replace his current Tahoe uppon his return from Florida in March, and most likely it will be an LTZ with all the available goodies (just like his current truck).

My dad plans on getting a Silverado or Sierra once they go on sale, the diesel verison caught his intrest because he plans on buying this huge boat for whatever reason. I hope he ends up getting it.

My dad is kinda pissed because he just bought a GMT800-based Avalanche over the summer. Yeah, its going to be another year untill the GMT900 Avalanche replacement is out, but as he says:

"I just bought the damn truck!"

... And now he wants the new Camaro...

Ya look for the GMT900 pickups either towards the end of year I would say. There really isn't any information on them yet. But ya, my dad used to have a GMT800 Avalanche but he hated the thing because it wasn't roomy enough so he bought a 2500 Cargo G-van.

For my Dad it was either the Avalanche or a Silverado Crew Cab. He needed room for five, so he ended up with the Avalanche 4X4 with the bench seat. He also claims he bought it for the enclosed bed, but I dont think it would have made a difference either way...

Alot of my neighbors tend to disagree with me when I bring up GM's new styles and designs.

They tend to think the American Revolution is crap....though I do find it slightly true.

Anyways, though they hate the designs, I like 'em. Some look very nice, and a few of the new SUVs I wouldn't mind owning had I the money to afford a new '06 vehicle.

Well like I said, the GMT800 line was way outta date and I think GM did a really good update with the 900's. GM might not do something right, but they did this right for sure.
