advanR: I don't know what racing it was. It was whatever was on Speedvision when my dad was in the hospital. It was a bunch of BMWs and Porsches.

Anyway, I don't really like F1, but its because they're not even remotely like any normal car, most other racing i've ever watched just appear to be supped up and somewhat modified street cars. I know there's more too it than that, but its how it looks.

OK guys, this thread has picked up quality, so I'm going to leave it open, but I'm not happy with some of the language that's been used in here.

Try and keep calm, OK?

To put it bluntly, making comparisons between F1 and NASCAR is pointless. The only thing the series' share in common is the fact they have to have 4 wheels + 1 steering wheel and one driver.

Power/ top speed: NASCAR cars using old-fashioned technology with a carburettor to produce horsepower in the range of 400-450 (with restrictor plates) to upwards of 700-750 for other events. Top speed is not usually measured, but the governing body usually makes sure the cars are drag/power-limited to around 205mph for the safety of the spectators. F1 cars probably produce between 750-850hp depending on the circuit specifications, and will top out at different speeds depending on the circuit. Monza has one one of the longest starightaways, and cars can reach ~220mph. But at many circuits, the cars never get above 180mph.

Car weight: Around 3400lbs of a NASCAR, and 1200lbs. for an F1 car. Yes, the F1 car will accelearte faster than virtually anything short of a top-fuel dragster.

Gearbox: Limited to 4 gears, manual only, in NASCAR. The fisrt two are very tall gears because they are topping out at nearly every track. Short tracks and road courses are the exceptions. F1 cars will have 7 gears and semi-automatic shifters, with gears also tuned to the particular circuit. It's common to use every gear but 1st (a few instances) during every lap of a race.

Safety: Hard to compare. F1 cars are the de facto standard for the world's safest racing machinery. The cars are crash-tested, and use all sorts of very tight regulations. (That said, the drivers aren't the safest in the world!) NASCAR has a cage, the grade of safety technology isn't quite the best, but exotic materials like carbon-fiber aren't used.

Racing: In NASCAR, all but two courses are ovals; varying types of ovals, however. The passing doesn't always occur into the braking zone of every turn. However, it takes a certain stamina and concentration to drive a car for up to 500 miles against the best. In F1, the races are about 190 miles, but there is very little wait time. You have to drive at 99+% all of the time. NASCAR can provide a lot of passing, but usually very little at restrictor-plate races, sadly. F1 is more of a tactical race, carfule judgements and pit strategies must be used. Passing is rare.

Hope that clears things up a little.

actually NASCARS are extremely safe, after Earnhardts crash, they bascially specialize in front and side impacts, NASCARs are probably just as safe as F1.

Years ago, I used to watch Gordon race midgets and sprint cars at Indianapolis raceway park. I always thought he would move up to CART racing. I guess he's a woos and decided to go the easy route. NASCAR

GARRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok....so I'm a tad late to replying to this thread....but I'm going to reply anyway!!!!!!
*Blood Boiling*

First of all, I come from probably the largest NASCAR fan family in the states of Kentucky and Ohio. I've been watching NASCAR for my entire life. First thing I'd do when I'd come home from church is turn on FOX to watch the race. It's the one sport that our entire family has come to love. Just like a bunch of racing fans like Rally, F1, Sprint, Drag or any other type of racing may be a passion for some, NASCAR is our passion. I love racing, but NASCAR is my kind.

Another thing, there is no way you can compare NASCAR to F1, Rally, Drag, Sprint or any other type of racing. It's just different. It's racing, and as somebody did say earlier in this thread, when it comes down to it it's four tires, one steering wheel, and one driver. Whatever kind of racing suits you, let it be yours.

Oh yeah...and before I forget: JEFF GORDON IS A GOOD RACER! HE DID NOT GET TO NASCAR BY JUST BEING THE AMAZINGLY GOOD-LOOKING PRETTY BOY HE IS!!!!!!!! Ever since I was like, 8, he's been my favorite racer! Of course my other favorites include Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Look at is like this: Could you be as successful in racing as he has been? And be honest with yourself on this one. I'm a good kart racer, but there is no way I could do what he does. (No way I have enough nerve to make a turn at a near vertical turn :( )

If you're saying NASCAR is a "redneck" sport and means that as an insult, somebody needs to shut that gap in their face. It takes a lot of skill, endurance, ambition, smarts, strength, and talent to do not just what the racers do, but the pit crew, those who build the tracks, and those who are ahead of NASCAR. So it's not idiots who are running the race. *Watching the race at Texas Motor Speedway* There's 200,000 people there right now...mwuuahahahaaa.

And yes...I take this very seriously :embarrassed:

Well, now I feel better that I've had the chance to vent.
Have a lovely day. ;)

Gordon going to CART instead of nascar, c'mon he would rather go road race than do what he has been doing for his entire life.

and why is it that all these road racers are fast by themselves but when someone is trying to pass them or is near them they end up running into one another?

gordon is extremely good, i remember in the mid 90s that all the ford boys were crying about how good he was and that chevy had an unfair advantage but no other chevy was doing as good as gordon on such a consistant basis.

That sucks, I could do that for real by going around the local roundabout again and again. Mind you itd would probably require more skill.

Go watch some REAL motorsport not some redneck rubbish (well if you are a redneck you probably dont know any better)
Heh heh heh.

nascar takes alot of skill... any driving takes skill. F1...pfft those guys dont drive! they are AUTOMATIC ... well atlest they took out TRACTION CONTROL..... these guys are basicly jumping in a huge go-kart...no shifting...small c0ckpit (yes somtimes it filters that) motor behind you....bascly the same... and the most exiciting part of F1 is the start the pit stops.. and the end (to see if somone lets their teammie win) in a few seconds ill post the closest finish in NASCAR .001 sec

first off i watch every f1 race and being an american they are live one tv at some crazy times, but if u want to start bad mouthing nascar u have to realize that the IRL has all ovals and Cart has some ovals, so if u want to bad mouth nascar you should also bad mouth those on the same principal.

F1 isnt automatic. Retard.

if you watch their hands while going down a straight they donothing even if they pushed a paddel we would see it they r automatic!!!!!!!!!!1

They are not automatic transmissions. They have sequential gearboxes, with the clutch being electronically controlled. They use paddle shifters, and you can see it.
