Is the academy edition the full game plus extras?...I want to buy it because to use my version online I need to update it...and I haven't updated it since purchase...and on my Internet that's almost two weeks of continuous download :L...also do I have to start again or can I use save data from the original game?

It's the exact same game, plus update 2.8. Meaning, you'll only have to update to 2.9, and your save file will work perfectly fine.
The DLC comes in a voucher code, that you must redeem using the PlayStaion Store.

I received GT5: Academy Edition from my German In-laws for Christmas.. Created a new German PSN ID, GTP_wheels, and hopefully I can download and participate in the competition. Looking forward to it.

Academy Edition Seasonal Time Trial is up. One event, takes place on a generated Eifel circuit in the GT-R N24 GT Academy '12 with Racing Mediums.

Prizes:
Gold: 5,000,000 + Random Helmet
Silver: 3,500,000 + Racing Suit
Bronze: 1,500,000 + Racing Suit

Yup, code is now valid. As about 20 mins ago 90 or so people had logged times. I won't get a change until after New Years festivities.

No mention of any code redemption in any of the posts giving these details, so I just assumed that it simply showed up as a seasonal, like they normally do, hence my enquiry. Had there been such details given I wouldn't have needed to ask.

Nothing there. All I've got is the competition registration email that says this:

Congratulations!

You have completed the online registration process for the GT Academy Challenge competition. In order to participate in this competition you will also need to have redeemed your GT Academy Challenge competition voucher code. Don’t worry if you have not already done this as you can do so now. Just follow the instructions below.

1. Set up a PlayStation(R)Network account by selecting “PlayStation(R)Network” on your PlayStation(R)3 system’s XMB(TM) Menu or by visiting eu.playstation.com/registration on a PC.

2. Visit PlayStation(R)Store via your PS3(TM) system.

3. Select the “<<Redeem Codes>>” icon from the “<<Store Top>>”.

4. If required, sign in to your PlayStation(R)Network account.

5. Enter the 12 character voucher code and select <<Continue>>.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions to redeem the voucher code.

Once you’ve redeemed your voucher code, you need to boot up GT5, go to the Seasonal Events section and click on the GT Academy Challenge competition. You should ensure that you have downloaded all available updates to GT5. Don’t forget that the competition closes on 31 January 2013.
