Gran Turismo 6 general Physics Discussion(as well as video)

From Saidur's link above:

Oh... my... gosh. This is crazy... other racing games?? Whatever!

Seriously, the more I read about what Polyphony is up to, the less I give a toot about other racers.

The exact same thing other serious racing game devs are up to you mean?

You make it sound like no other sim has ever used race data to fine tune their physics model.
Can you tell me any developer who has used game data to fine tune a real world race car - in an ongoing event no less?

also Why did you change your name ?
I'm baffled too. He uses SimonK for years with a Samus Aran gif avatar, then changes his name to Samus and has some generic rock star silhouette...

That way around is of no use to us though, the other way around is and plenty of devs have done that. It's a large basis of creating a sim, really.

Just wanted a change. I know the name and avatar would've matched but ah well. As for the new avatar, you wash your mouth out! :P That ain't no "generic rock star", that is Freddie Mercury in a very famous stance.

I'm taking the whole try stuff in GT6 then implement in real life with a grain of salt to be honest.

I disagree. This speaks well of the physics implementation in the game if they made something so accurate and they're so confident in it, it can be used to race tune a real world race car for an event on the spot.

I've raced a few sims, and I haven't seen car behavior in them like we've seen in these videos of the early builds of GT6. The only game remotely like it is Forza 4, and GT6 looks even more lifelike.

As for the Freddie image, I stand corrected, but I've never seen him with that expression on his face. ;)

Very risky undertaking to use game data for real life car tuning, if PD dare to do it at a prestigious event like 24H Nurb, they must have big balls

You're speaking of console sims, right? or racing sims in general?

Can you tell me how much data transfer there really was from game to real world? I sure can't, and I doubt we'll be told. It's very interesting nonetheless, as it looks like the GT series will finally be benefiting rather directly from Kaz' moonlighting, and like you mentioned, early signs (like that R8 LMS video) are promising, but I wouldn't place a whole lot of importance on that particular nugget of information without knowing what level the game data is really being taken into account for the car.

ISI? rFactor Pro. RBR F1 team used to use it, not sure if they still do. Other teams may have used it also.

Kunos? They advertise that they produce simulations for race teams. There was always speculation that they had a hand in producing the Ferrari F1 simulation, but to my knowledge it was never confirmed. Still, seems reasonable considering Ferrari Virtual Academy and their links to Ferrari.

No, PC sims too, though I keep forgetting about P CARS which also looks good, though it is also beginning to get some flak from fans as being toned down a bit to be more accessible. Still, this is subject to user judgment and it is early for it and all.

Have any sources for that? Because the only thing I can find online - besides your post - is the common knowledge that race car drivers race in everything from iRenting to Dirt 3 to keep in racing form or just for sheer fun of it. I know how the net can bury facts - right Slip? - but yours is the first I've heard of that.

You're counting your chickens before they hatch. While the videos so far have shown an improvement over vehicle behavior in GT5, we still don't know how it compares to other [PC]sims.

Well it simply can't compete with new sims as the PS3 is old hardware... although I am certain it will rival some older PC Sims, I believe GTR2 was realised in 2006 and considered realistic, or rFactor 1 was 2007...

There was also LFS, which ran on 2001-2004 hardware so PS3's power is no excuse. Unfortunately it's just PD, who don't want to make completely new engine from scratch.. or they can't..

Yeah I didn't mean it like that, of course it speaks very well of the physics but I thought you meant the actual direct action of what they were doing was useful for the game and us. Obviously it's not but tweaking the physics with the real car(s) certainly is and lots of other devs have done that in the past.

How can anybody be confident that GT6 physics will be anything more than "decent" when GT5 is their last product? Unless they fired a bunch of people?

A ten-year old with no knowledge of cars except an issue of EVO magazine could have recognised how far off the mark it was, and yet they shipped it, and now all of sudden we're expecting the cutting edge of suspension and tyre physics? Please.

Yes it looks a lot better. It really couldn't have looked a lot worse, but until we get the demo it's just bizarre to start assuming it will have made this giant leap. All that happens is that people become totally over-defensive about "their" game, and then their pride gets in the way and they lose all capacity for subjective honest judgment.

They didn't have to fine anyone. With GT5, they didn't want a top class sim. The fans didn't like it, so now they've changed their minds.

If GT5 was the best they could do physics wise, we might be in trouble. However I very much doubt that was the case.

This gif was posted in the GT5 vs GT6 Graphics Comparison thread here, I thought it should also be posted in this thread because it shows off the new suspension moddeling well. The way it moves is very realistic imo, can't wait to try the GT Academy demo in July! :D

The X-bow is one of the ugliest cars ever made, and GT6 does an excellent job of recreating this ugliness. On a more relevant note, the suspension model, graphically, looks incredible. As good or better than any out there I would say.

I'm going to amend my praise just a bit. While the suspension modeling in Forza 4 is very good, I still haven't seen vehicle kinetics like this except in Project CARS. And I would add this to the video sharing.

Well, hopefully the graphics of that bouncing/vibrating suspension is modeled into the handling physics.

The action of the springs/dampers looks good, very realistic.

I also hope that we will be able to feel those bumps with the wheel.

One thing that is lacking in GT is that effect in the wheel. The FFB is good but when running over a rumble strip the only real feedback is the sound. A bit of vibration sent to the wheel would go a long ways to make it more enjoyable.

I hope they give better feedback on what the car is doing through the wheel. For example when you get understeer in real life there is a difference of feel through the wheel just as when the car gets oversteer there's a different feel also. If they can get that right I'll be really happy. Of course I'd like to see the handling of the cars be true to life also. Should be interesting to see what happens for GT Academy if they do get the sim more true to life.

watch the GT 6 Video (live stream video) from vga , there PD is showing the Alpine in the same corner in 2 different versions.
First the GT 5 Alpine is driving through the cornet , after that the GT 6 Alpine , it looks awesome.

Light sport cars + comfort hard tyres + GT 6 physics = Awesome races.

Turning into a corner ( a bit too fast ) , comfort hard tyres loosing grip ->understeer ( Now GT 6's physics come to place ) + weight of the car will be pushing more on the outside tyre ...

I think Buttons driving style FTW ?

I apologize for this, but I can't find that video, could you help me? :indiff:
