Gran Turismo 7 PS5 Pro Update: 8K Graphics, Real-Time Ray-Tracing On Track

PS5 Pro has dedicated RT hardware that’s 2-3x more potent than base PS5. Devs can also extract 10% more performance from the CPU.

Even at this early stage, the expectation is most games will run in Quality mode (or better), while hitting 60FPS, often more stable than base PS5, running in Performance mode.

Each dev will do what’s best for them, some good implementations, others the absolute minimum required. But PSSR is a tech that will be updated, which in turn will improve every title using the upscaler.

PS4 Pro offered a modest resolution bump, and more stable performance. There were very few titles that saw framerates double from 30-60fps. PS5 Pro will offer more substantial image quality improvements and double the framerate (compared to Quality mode). That’s before we factor improvements for graphical effects, RT etc. Those will be more prominent for titles designed with PS5 Pro in mind.

The FFVII rebirth footage comparison is quite disingenuous as it actually shows how poorly optimised that game itself was more than the pro buff.

Plus... this is all video, there is no actual physical gameplay here. It would not be the first time a game looked absolutely mesmerising to then be majorly nerfed. Look at Watchdogs original E3 for proof of that

The poor optimalization is the main reason why I will buy PS5 pro. Right now, most of the 60 fps performance modes actually run at 40-60 fps (Cyberpunk, Space Marine, TDU this one is more like 10-40 fps). I hope with PS5 pro I will actually hit the 60 fps in performance modes at least in 1080p with all my games.

I don't see how the PS5 Pro will fix poor optimisation. This machine learning AI is not something I'm convinced on, remember the promises of Sophy? I do.

If it had cost as much as the original console at launch I may have considered buying a Pro, but in Japan the price at launch is twice of what I paid for my PS5 in 2021.
There are only few games I enjoy playing, and none of them would be improved by having more pixels or better shaders.

I'll be excited to see more footage. RT reflections are nice, but if PD can get RT GI to work in real time, it will make GT7 a different experience all together. Perhaps we could have 24hr cycles on all tracks? That would be glorious.

i don't think it's car reflection only, they just noted that point as it was the easiest one to notice, but they also talk about how the light reflect in the interior of cars (better for cockpit view) so it should be the global RT tech that was in replay mode.
You meant Photo Mode. In replays there are actually RT reflections only on cars. Global RT reflections + RT AO is only in Photo Mode, garage and real time cutscenes.

I never really used replay mode more than 30 second so I thought it was the same RT across the whole game, thanks for the clarification

I was thinking of getting a pro before I saw the price. I knew the changes weren't going to be very significant and so I was also expecting a price increase on par with that. 800 euros is too much for what they are apparently giving us (I'll wait for people to start getting it in their hands).

I'd be more excited if PD tolds us we could have 20 car grids again. I don't need RT in races.

Better lighting? Yes. Solid 120hz? Yes. No stutter? Hell yeah. Rain and 24h cycle on all tracks? Yes. RT in races? Meh

I'll pass for now. I haven't played a game on ps5 where I felt the graphics or frame rate was bad. I'm not saying those games don't exist, but I haven't played them, so I have no case for upgrading now. Better spend that money on a better wheel/pedals/rig.

Would love to see GT7 on PSVR2 running at native 120fps/90fps on the headset, and not in reprojection, and of course any sharpening of graphics. I would absolutely be interested in upgrading if the improvements are for the headset also. I only play in VR, so all these pretty improvements for flatscreen are wasted on me

Kind of is, why waste development time on that instead of fixing absent events, bad AI, poor penalty system, broken lobby settings, unbalanced economy, etc?
It is highly unlikely that the developers working on graphics are the same people who work on the other topics you mentioned (if they do at all and do not focus on the next GT title already).

GT has always been a testbed and a showcase for new technologies. They don't do it because they think many people will use it. They do it to show off and do some r&d along the way.

You could hook up 5 PS3s and play GT on 5 Screens - how many people did that?

Thank god PD likes experimenting with new tech - L.O.V.E. GT7 in VR.

If you enjoy paying over £250 in peripherals and subscriptions for one game, more power to you

8K isn’t about consumers. It's about getting it out in front of investors and partners, and in trade magazines.
GT7 being at TGS sounds like no September update to me. The event and update would clash.
It's as meaningless as the GTWS event being on at the same time. Show and live events have a dedicated game build and are unrelated to any public build.

I think its getting to the point were I will need some cyberpunk style optical implants to be able to discern any meaningful difference in these upgrades. Having come from the good old days of 8bit graphics the journey has been incredible, but lately I think we are at a plateau. It's very hard to justify a PS5 pro... definitely in want rather than need territory for me.

We're definitively at the point of diminishing returns, probably a bit past it actually.

I’m not talking about builds. GT7 being present at TGS tells me that PD wants the attention of the public to be directed at their PS5 Pro enhancements. September update would distract from their TGS presence. They might even use the event to preview new content coming in October.

I hope I’m wrong though. Two months and potentially three without a content update is too long after the turbulence caused by the July update.

Again, the GTWS live event is also on the same weekend, taking place on one of the two public days for the TGS. It has live streams and what looks like 900 people in the theatre. What's that telling you about where PD (not PD; SIE) wants the attention of the public?

There's one console station running GT7 at TGS. We'll also likely get a trailer during one of the GTWS streams.

Neither is relevant to there being an update (or not) on what we expect to be Thursday September 26 - two days prior to either.
