Well despite being a bit tired after 24 hr Le Mans League racing and race engineering, the driving was still consistent and my mind was sharp. Pace wasn't that great overall, so just a P11 in qualifying with a 2.05.9. The positive side was that except for the top3-4 my pace was not massively off a lot of drivers ahead, so anything could happen in the race. Also thanks to this forum I got the vibe that maybe driving on dead tires wasn't such a bad idea, it all depends on track position and consistency, while having enough pace.
Anyways the first few laps were chaotic as you'd expect in these types of cars on a technical tight track. Got up to P8 after a few corners, then got almost spun around by someone a little later on lap 1, but managed to catch the slide and only lose two places, back down to P10. But the chaos didn't stop there, apparently in the lobby was a dirty driver. Which normally would annoy me a lot, but I thought this as an opportunity to cash in a good result, if they kept ruining a couple drivers races, and if I managed to somehow sneak by them. I've been in a few races like these races before, so the key was to stay calm and not provoke the dirty driver.
So yeah it wasn't pretty up ahead, the dirty driver kept shoving people of the track mostly by side contact and not leaving any space. Around lap 6 I was up to P7 thanks to the chaos ahead and my consistent driving, and I was now chasing an UK driver and the dirty driver. They went side by side up ahead and barely left any space to each other, so I think the UK driver either had enough and pit and/or they were not sure how their tires could last the whole race. So I stayed out, up to P6 start of lap 7.
Around lap 8 the dirty driver started to struggle a lot with the worn tires, my tires were almost fully dead too, but I managed to have enough pace still to challenge them for P5. The main reason being that the driving tires (rear for rwd cars) were in great shape, despite the fronts were almost dead, and I had good feel for the car still. Anyways got a great run out of the last esses and got side by side with the dirty driver. For some reason they did not decide to hit me into the side, so I outbraked them into T1, up to P5. They did a slight bump into me, around T2. Totally unnecessary, but could have been worse and they couldn't get past. A few more corners and they were almost 1 sec back, so basically they weren't a threat anymore, during lap 9.
Btw I did have an earlier fight with the dirty driver around lap 3 or 4, and they went for a small gap which was not really on. But having seen how they drove I decided to let them have the place just for safety and also hoping that if we get another battle that they won't consider me as someone deserving a shove or punt. And yeah this analysis proved to be correct.
After that on lap 10, yeah the front tires were dead, but I still kept okayish pace in the 2.09-2.10s, and 2.11s last two laps. Without the dirty driver, 1-3 drivers behind, who went for a 1 stopper could have potentially caused me trouble. But the dirty driver acted kinda like a "rear gunner" unintentionally, so the chasing drivers behind them probably lost 6-7 sec in the last 5 laps, and the chasers also fought themselves. So yeah eventually the chasers got through, but they could only make like 4 sec back on last 1,5 laps, which was not enough. So in the end a fairly easy P5 and 166 points.
Very consistent and mature driving, even if I say so myself 😄 Let the others do the fighting, don't fight too much and just focus on your own driving are racing mindsets I use most of the time, and while they are clichés too, well they are that for a good reason. Yeah that is all, time to do something else than GT7, I think I have had enough for a while and thanks to the Olympic event, no need to grind credits for a while. Should be plenty of credits for the new cars next week, which all seem interesting.
