That is strange because I'm literally doing practice laps in the Merc at Spa?

You sure the payout wasn't for the TT that finished?

As for Saturday's race, it looks pretty straightforward. Just a 10-lap sprint. I haven't driven 10 laps in free practice yet to see if there is any rain, but I doubt we'll see any. This is Nations Cup, after all (not Manu).

The one thing that strikes me as a bit odd is that we'll only have 5 minutes for qualifying. I'm guessing that will mean only one qualifying lap since even the best time in the global ranking was over 2:32.

10 laps in this Merc could be a bit of an attritional one at lower levels. I've not driven it yet but I'm assuming it likes to slide around.

It's not that bad actually. The brakes are very "of the era" and to actually go fast there are a couple of places you over rev the he'll out of it.

It is a bit slide happy off of curbs but you can coast past that trait a bit.

I think the attrition will come from consistency rather than it sliding all over the place. Once you get a line wrong there is not real on the pace way to recover just because of carrying momentum.

I'm not GT1 this time round so will report high GT2 lobby races when I do them, but I'm feeling this will be like the RA at Watkins. Some will know how to extract the corner speed and some will drive it like a normal car.
 
In non-Merc news, the combinations for the GTWS finals have been announced.

Manufacturers is Gr.3 at Spa, probably in the rain.
Nations is the tuned road cars at Trial Mountain, then an undisclosed race*, then the final is 7 laps of N24 in the X2019...
TGR is the Super Formula at Road Atlanta/Interlagos/Red Bull Ring to qualify for the final you'd expect, GR010s at Le Mans (also probably in the rain).

*don't get too excited about this, they've done this multiple times before in GT7 GTWS and it's not once been unrevealed content yet.
 
It's a grid start tomorrow, any recommendations how to have a good one with this car? I'm a beginner so I've done just a few grid starts ever.
If you are in the GT2 or GT3 leagues, there's nothing to it. Just smash the gas pedal to the floor when the countdown starts and the car will blast off when the count hits zero. GT1 is a bit more complicated because it has the false start check, but it is basically the same thing. Floor it while holding the the emergency brake button, then release the brake when the lights change.

That's all I do, anyways. Maybe there are more subtle techniques to get a better start off the line, but I can't imagine they matter much in this race since you'll be into the chaos of T1 right off the bat.

Merc W196 is very nice to drive, handling has a good weight unlike most of the other formula cars (unless they have updated these, didn't check last night). And the powerslides.... everything about it is lovely! Got to make a livery today...

There's always plenty of friendly test Nations races going on in lobbies, if you want to check your standing starts that's a good place (plus pick up any other tips). You can save the replay and see who gets off the line best!

Assuming you have 20,000,000 credits kicking around to buy the car for yourself, of course.

I was fortunate to have enough cash on hand to pick one up. I've run a few custom races for practice now. I find that the car does drive differently under race trim. It's not a huge change, but the fuel weight and slipstream effects (I've been using 'strong' for practice) do impact my braking points noticeably.

I'm guessing a lot of drivers will be stuck using a rental and will only have experience driving in the idealized conditions of Free Practice. I'm expecting a lot of chaos as drivers adapt on-the-fly to fuel weight, tire wear, and slipstream effects.
 
They just introduced the W196 and immediately it gets a real race, but the RA272 has been in the game for a while and either only gets meaningless Race A's or stupid sprint races around glorified go-kart tracks...

As far as how it drives, I like it so far. I'm still about 2s off the pace I probably need to be at, and don't quite know where to find that time, but I suspect I'm over-driving the corners a bit to compensate for the tall gears and relative peakiness of the engine.

Also, when you get a chance, drive in cockpit view and watch the tachometer. 🤣

The Fangio Merc is a really fun drive. I like it much better than the RA272.

Sitting at a 35.0 at Spa. Which is annoying because I was up on that by .350" and went wide on that last left kink earning a .5pen and invalidated lap. Oh well...
 
Pushing on a bit it's a trickier car if your aren't comfortable letting the car move around a bit.

I'm gonna QT tomorrow as I think I won't embarrass myself, that said I'm not thinking I'll improve points wise and it's not a race I want to grind, having already done the grind on the dailies
 
This Mercedes is a really really really really nice car to drive. I don't know if it's my left index finger after a year of trailbraking, but I'm in the top 150 and +1.94% off the top time. See you on the other side. Race starting.

Haven’t done one of these for a while. Took until the very last lap until I remembered why.

Messed up my one quali lap so abandoned and started 15th. Made up places off the start by hugging the pitwall. A few more passes and I was 5th crossing the line at the end of the lap. Good close racing over most of the race. Got up to 3rd at one point but gradually dropped back to 9th, a fair indication of my true pace.

On the last lap the person ahead runs wide all by themselves out of turn 1, so I drive past (way over to the side of the track). They can’t handle being overtaken under any circumstances, so rear end me at the bottom of Eau Rouge. Massive tankslapper, car goes to the right across the runoff and gets reset. Lose a bunch of places and I just couldn’t be bothered to finish the race.

It was good fun up until the end.

A/S EMEA (161pts)

QT 10th

Clipped going in to Eau Rouge 5 laps last and 5 in P13

If I get back this afternoon I will try and improve but I'd need an 8th or better to improve my round 3 score.

Race is 7/10 for me but I must say the opening corners look epic with 16 cars piling in!

I was also the only person with a livery so I'm assuming the rest were rentals which is to be expected.
 
Well what an eventful and analogly engaging race today at the final race of Nations cup!

Logged onto the 12pm - EMEA slot in lobby B side with around 14 racers so not a full pack.
Car no.14 -- MB W196 '55 Racecar.


Go into sport mode and setup my qualifying time, which was good, then left the pits first and tried to get the pace, but was overall not so great in the qualys and only got 8th place. Then I braced and got ready for the race, a bunch of decent racers in this lobby so I feel confident I could excel and not get bamboozled on turn 1.

Onto the race, so the start was very strong, boosted out the grid taking two places heading to the hairpin, then I got clipped by a brit driver on my rear end causing me to spin, I applied countersteer to hold the car on and manged ot save it as i lost like 5 places and then proceeded down Eau rouge at speed to catch the escaping guys.

Then I pushed and pushed working my way over the next few laps to get up to 6th place. My composure was stronger at the start but it being so cold in the UK, I had to push myself to keep on chugging, Made a slight error on last turn of lap 5 at the hairpin went wide but saved it. Couple of racers bowed out due to spinning out earlier I beleive.

Then I had another brit racer start a nice battle for 5th as he chased for the next two laps and we went back and forth on turn 1 and last turns every time, each one trying to one up each other! then got a 1.5 secs as i went wide on Radillion leading up to Kemmel, penalty that made me lose my pace on lap 8 as the chasing racer passed me on Blanchmont penalty area.

He finally got past me on lap 9 and i was chasing him, then the 4th lace guy a czech I believe racer spun on the uphill chichane and hit the wall, then the two us caught up and passed him, back up to 5th, he got 4th, so I finished chasing on lap 10 to finally come in 5th place strong in the W196. Very fun race and keeping that legend car on the road was fun in the latter laps on the SS tyres.

Hopefully my final reward improved from this race, netted 70points in this lobby Final race!

We do need more analog races like this sometimes, with less fussy TC and just raw control of these cars!

Sure, but since I post on a desktop, and the pictures just help visualise my post, it looks much different to me.
But I will try that next time, but if i used that feature, then it would not really be a spoiler then would they? LOL.
